Alright. After a long night of thinking, this is what i have come up with.

Aemelia gets herself into a bit of trouble as she makes a bet she can't pay, making her become a sort of indentured servant until her debt is payed.

So this happened...
Aemelia meets a stallion who is her equal or better at betting, and she becomes very attached to said male, even so far as to coming to love him.
