Romero affected a look of utter shock and betrayal, but it did not reach up to his eyes, which still held a confident smirking light. “Are you now?” he asked amusedly. “Y bueno,” he admitted with a laugh. “You caught me. But you have far less claim to sexiness than I do anyway. England is not in any manner handsome and France is a pervert, while I am Spanish. And Luis, too,” he added to be fair. He conveniently omitted the fact that almost half of his population was mestizo instead.
It seemed that something else was terrifying Elpis. "Que pasa, chica?" he asked her, putting a hand to his sword again. “Is there something else we need to worry about?”

Plus, I look damn handsome with my long flowing French mane and Spanish good looks!" He said as he reached for his ponytail, and undid it, letting his wavy hair fall to his shoulders."Plus, I can cook a damn fine meal and wrestle a bear without getting a scratch! So I've got much more sexiness in my absolutely handsome eyes than in your entire 'almost as well sculpted as mine is' chest!" He added as he crossed his arms."Plus, the ladies love a man with endless confidence! So just try beating that!" He was completely unaware of what he was saying half of the time, this was his Alabamian pride kicking in.
Johnny then looked over to his sister in shock.He then gave a determined look."Oh, ya gone an' did it now!" He challenged as he looked over to Romero."It takes more than one opinion to deter me! I challenge you!" He declared with a challenging grin."I challenge you to a contest of men! Real men! Romero was startled to hear his name said instead of Johnny’s, especially after he and Leah had just met on rough terms. Was this her way of making up? If so, he appreciated it.
He watched in much elevated spirits as Alabama let down his hair and with a military effort suppressed a chuckle. “Gracias, Leah; you made the right decision,” he commended her lightly. “And flowing locks?” he asked, turning back to Johnny. "Tu mójól me parece como lo de Francia,” he answered, amused at the ludicrousness of that argument. He did not mean that comment nicely. Then he settled in to listen to the rest of Johnny’s rant. “Sí, puedes luchar con un oso, pero puedes vencer a un ejército?” he added. “Talk to me again when you defeat an entire army almost singlehandedly.”
Romero didn’t even bother trying to counter the rest of Johnny’s arguments because they were not only non-unique, but they were also nonsensical. hearing the Southerner's hollered challenge did make him turn around. "A sexiness contest?" he asked. "De verdad? You silly estado. Wasn’t it you who asked for your hermana’s opinion? Real men know when to retreat from an unwinnable fight." And to Venezuela, this fight was unwinnable… for an American.

Romero sighed dramatically and folded his arms. What made fighting bears a sign of steadfastness and destroying an army brutish? Everyone knew that a major component of masculine appeal was sheer strength. Brutes certainly had that; Venezuela had finesse. “Tú me hace reír,” he replied. “When have your ever fought in a war in which your own pride was at stake? If I remember correctly, you were not one of the original thirteen colonies that founded los Estados Unidos, and your Civil War was much more of a bad argument than anything else. You have never had to fight for your independence, so qué sabes de pelear pare el orgullo y el país?”
The South American sighed again and began cracking his knuckles in turn, but he was not so hasty to remove his tunic. Romero had had this outfit for centuries, and he was not about to tear it apart just to put one cocky state back in his place. “Muy bien. Say I accept your silly contest. What would you have us do?” he asked, ignoring Luis and Elpis for the time being.

You have no idea how many wounds my brothers and sisters suffered in that war! Especially us southern states! We have scars from then the size of baseballs! Look at the battle of Athens's result!" He said as he pointed to a large, irregularly shaped scar ,spanning from his collarbone to his chin."You have no idea the pain we went through! I may see you as a friend, but I'll knock you upside the head if you EVER make fun of my family's inner problems!" He declared as he set Romero down.He took a few breaths, and finally calmed down."Besides, this isn't about wars...This is about sexiness." He stated calmly as he rubbed his forehead.

Romero glared as he was hauled in by his collar by the angry state. “Así fue? Perdón; I don’t pay overt attention to your histories,” he said testily. When he was released, the Venezuelan watched as Alabama suddenly went from a raging testosterone-fueled buff to a somewhat calmer normality. What a personality 180…
The North Atlantic Spaniard stared as Johnny issued his challenge, and then promptly burst out laughing. “Ja! What did you need to rip your shirt off for then?” he answered good-naturedly. “Bueno; if it’ll make you happy, I accept your challenge! Pero no me llores cuando pierdes!”
Still smiling, he turned back to Luis and Elpis. ‘Aquests estats,” Romero remarked, rolling his eyes and using his limited command of Catalán from the old independence wars and his infrequent visits to Argentina. “If there’s nothing more to do here, we really should be heading back,” he added, his statement sounding more like a question as he glanced at Elpis. Judging by how worried she seemed, there might possibly be something waiting even deeper in the cave for her, and he didn’t want to leave if that was the case.

Romero listened without comment until Johnny dared to insinuate that he would cheat. He was a soldier, trained in the ways of duelists; he would not stain his honor by cheating on a mere contest between a superior and an inferior! “Yo? Tramposo?” he asked indignantly. “I won’t need or want to cheat; ya sé que ganaré!” However, being unable to use his uniforms would be somewhat of a disadvantage… Then again, it was only fair, seeing that he as much older and had far more experience at picking up chicks.
Sighing, he pasted a smile on again. “Are we quite done here?”
