Though still slightly on edge, Eva had allowed herself to relax ever so slightly as the seconds ticked by. So far, the church seemed to be a rather secure place--one with a barrier that was hopefully strong enough to stand up to any creatures that were lurking outside. Her tense shoulders began to relax...
Only to stiffen the moment Stan's eyes suddenly flew wide open. The urgency in his voice alarmed her, but it wasn't until the lights went out and the noises started up did she feel her heart thump more violently within her chest. Her knuckles turned white as she curled her fingers tightly around the staff, body tense as she glanced about quickly. Something was trying to break in, but from where? It was hard for her to pinpoint the exact location.
A moment later, Eva would realize that the correct answer would have been from above.
She dodged one of the splinters that had come raining down on her, only to find that the first thing she witnessed when she looked back up was Stan's gruesome death. Eva watched in horror for a good few seconds before she forced her gaze away, squeezing her eyes shut as she tried to force away the sick feeling that came over her.
I know, Eva. But remember--mourning and regret can wait. You guys need to survive first.
The girl gave a small nod of her head as she pushed herself back up to her feet. Keeping her attention focused on the creatures, she swung out her weapon and took the nearest few down.

They swarmed her. Clerise felt them crawling over his skin, their little gnashings digging into her FEAR shield. She rolled forward, edging towards Reine, using her weapon to clear some of the beasties out.
This was not looking so great.

More mobs?
"Come on, Clerise Nicole, let's pull yourself together."
The redhead pulled herself up off the ground, shaking out her arm. It really was like wave after wave of shadow run, only they hit harder than the other little shadows.

Clerise sent out her weapon with a wavering cry, letting him mow down a half dozen creatures, sparks a flying.
"Why don't they stop," she whined, so..
God. She was just so tired. The redhead watched the others: shooting when they could. Fighting as much as possible, weapons cutting into the air. And yet, more and more of the bastards came in, flooding the little safe haven again and again and again.
The acrobat swiped one final time at the incoming horde, taking out a few more.
Her limbs felt like lead.

It was easy to tell a losing battle when he saw one, the hordes of the creatures seemed endless. For every one that fell there were many more simply waiting to take its place. For the redhead, caught in the eye of the storm it felt futile. The screeching talons were everywhere he looked, waiting on any gap in his assault to lash out at him, punishing any moment's hesitance with a helping of pain.
If anyone had asked him what he'd do in a situation like this before the island, he'd have told them he'd have given up, surrendered to inevitability.
But things had changed and through the darkness of this situation he could only keep one thought in mind. He was a Sun. The division that burned with the most passion and intensity in Deus Ex. If they wanted to kill him, the ******** would find out what happened when a sun went nova.
With a roar of defiance and fury he hauled every single ounce of charge he possessed into his hands and let himself stop thinking entirely about anything other than the fight, anything other than survival. He felt nothing, only the axe, ceasing to care where he ended and it begun. It was this distant focus that had allowed him to numb out pain growing up, to ignore hunger, to ignore the bruises from fights. It was only fitting a skill that had served him so long served him now in what felt like his last hour. Because he was certain, utterly certain that the moment he faltered he would be rent asunder like Stan. His life written on the floor of the church.
Explosions of black surrounded him as he swung and spun, as long as the charge held out managing to hold the creatures at bay. He felt invincible as screech after screech was silenced and for just a moment he could pretend to himself he could win this.
But the charge couldn't last forever and as Tracey tired, so too did he, the weight of the massive axe no longer as light in his hand, the swings no longer as nimble and instinctual.
The patient hordes had been waiting for their prey to falter.
They ripped his shield to shreds.

Trying to be cute. No, they were simply trying to finish this mission, and make it a success. Reine didn't like being put down, and she was just about to retort when Stan finally revealed some information. A giant nest, where the pub used to be... A nest. That was all they needed to know, wasn't it? All Caelius wanted out of them was confirmation of the location.. and he'd take care of the rest?
The man's story, though, made her uneasy. All her life she'd been able to see the monsters, and she'd thought that was bad- it was the first time she'd heard of the reverse. Imagine.. not even being able to see what.. killed you. At least, if you could see, you had some kind of fighting chance. It was the first time she'd truly appreciated being a hunter, or rather realised the significance of it. Her grip on Alynthe tightened, and she raised the swordbreaker a little higher, holding it close to her.
I won't let them take you, she thought. She could feel Alynthe curling around her, too, almost affectionately, the first time in what seemed like forever. Even if the weapon still wasn't speaking, this was a start to mending their relationship. Sort of.
The sappy moment was quickly cut short by Stan speaking up again, and the tone of urgency in his voice had Reine putting her guard up. Outside the church, the sky was turning black quickly, and horror-movie style, the lights were flickering out.
Thump. Thump. The whole place was shaking, and there was not one thing Reine could do. She could hear a voice in her mind screaming- hide the children, the rest of the survivors, but the minute she opened her mouth to try to yell out directions the whole ceiling caved in.
And then there was nothing but the black feathery monsters, screaming and flying straight at them, and if she couldn't save the civilians, at least, not her team--
There was one going for Rep, but before she could move to him more of them flew at her, overwhelming her, and she slashed out at them. She could hear her teammates fighting, and that at least kept her spirits up, as long as they were alive, as long as they were fine...
They..
There was a moment when it felt like time stopped completely, the moment she saw Clerise lying on the ground, bloody scratches all over her body.

With a scream almost as shrill as their own Reine turned, using that momentum to slash again, behind her. The blade tore through them, and through the tears Reine laughed. They would suffer, all of them, for hurting her friends; they would feel the pain of an ice-cold blade, the sting of ice-crystals clustering around them.
There were more of them than she could count, more of them than she had time to count. She heard another thud, and bit back a whimper.
Please be okay. Please be okay.

The futility was just beginning to set in. Reine was almost beginning to lose her mind; the air was ringing with shrieks and the flapping of wings. With every move, every stab or slash, she managed to snag at least one of the monsters, there were that many of them.
Like shadowlings, just with sharper claws, and more teeth.
Reine was beginning to stumble, losing herself in the whirlwind of monsters. Something attacked her from behind, its claws around her neck, knocking her down. There was a dull thud as her head hit the rubble covering the floor, and everything went blurry. Still the monsters were shrieking, though the noise slowly faded to static, buzzing and annoying, and then there was only silence.
In Reine's mind, everything was a pristine white. There was a man whose face she could not clearly see. She had to strain to hear his voice.
You are responsible for your team's actions.
And you are responsible for your team's failures.
Am I making myself very ******** clear?
She had no answer for him.

Eva's attention was focused entirely on the creatures, her gaze darting from one to another as she strike them down. One, two, three, four--she felt as if she was doing pretty well with taking these monsters down, but she was concerned. Just how many of these things were there? She tried not to focus on the fact that the stream of creatures seemed endless, telling herself that all she could do right now was fight back.
Or at least, until she saw Clerise lying a few steps away.
Her heart skipped a beat, and then it picked up in panic as she stared at the other trainee, her mouth dropped open. "Clerise!" Damnit! If she could just get to her--
But another creature chose that moment to swoop down, catching her in the side. Reeling backwards, Eva hissed out in pain before swinging Chara up in a counterattack. She was no longer focused wholeheartedly on the task at hand--instead, her concern lay with the injured girl.
And then it suddenly hit her that Reine and Rep were no longer standing around her either. Feeling her stomach clench, she turned to scan the ground.

And there they were.
"Dakota, they're--!" The careful calm that Eva tried to maintain during all her missions slowly crumbled at the sight of Rep and Reine--Reine--knocked out cold on the ground. With all the creatures descending on them, there was no way that she and Dakota could protect their comrades and take all the monsters down.
Still, she tried, knocking aside the shadows as she tried to make her way towards her injured teammates. So close, so close...
And then something struck her down from behind. She felt the distinct feeling of her shield shattering, and the last thing she heard before blacking out was Chara's uncharacteristically panicked voice.

Dakota shot Chama's Fire at as many of the shadowed beings he could. He watched though as Clerise fell, her shield down and yelled, pushing forward towards her. One step closer though ended up with more of the shadows mobbing ******** get out of my way!" Dakota snarled as he slashed away with Chama. Another step, ten more shadows on him. His arm stung from the pure effort of trying to block AND get to Clerise.
Then Rep fell. He swiveled his head to hear Reine who was doing her best as well. "REINE!!" He yelled changing his course towards her. s**t, ******** dammit. He was there to PROTECT her, not watch her get ripped to shreds by these ******** monsters.
"Goddamit. Eva be-" He looked at her too as she fell as well. He was the only one left now.
Chama shriveled in his brain. Couldn't he do ANYTHING right?!?! Hang in there Chama baby, just hang in there.

OOC DISCLAIMER: this part can get violent, if you are not good with possible gruesome scenes of violence and are in this RP, please do not read this section and simply pm me for a summary, thank you! As the trainees dropped, one by one, the creatures suddenly parted, flying upwards into the air in crazed spirals before flickering out of sight entirely. There was the sound of someone moving across the broken floorboards, the sound of something shattering-
- And then the splash of cold, filthy water as trainees were shocked back to consciousness, each of them tied and bound with thick rope.
There was no mistaking their surroundings despite the situation, despite the rotting floorboards, the smell, putrid and sweet at the same time, of the enclosed cavern that might have been a local bar. Broken bottles were strewn all over the lair, a lair that literally dug into and past the floorboards, tunnel reaching far beyond where the trainees could see. Pictures still decorated the walls of the former tavern, photos of people cheering, drinking, even a photo that looked like the man they had saw back in the church, Stan, though he was now-
- The dull clicking of the floorboards interrupted that particular train of thought as what had to be the lead of the strange flock of motley black creatures walked in. They looked almost normal, a demon-like creature wearing several layers of tattered beige robes all knotted together with a single piece of string. They raised one hand: all the other creatures, clicking and hissing and shuffling their features suddenly fell silent and slowly shuffled, obediently retreating back into the tunnel.
"Fresh Hunters." Their voice crackled, dry, hissing, each syllable oddly syncopated. "It has been a while, and now, they send fledgelings." It made strange clicking noises, as if in delight. "Oh, these should be much, much easier to break, fledgelings oh, I love them so."
It paused for a second, a single hardened nail scraping against the scratched, wooden counter. "You treat us the same, you Hunters. We are the Four Clans, we do not falter, we do not fall, we are not scared and-" clack - "We know of your ways. You cannot fool us, not before, not now, not ever." It suddenly lashed forwards, into and past the counter, one hand reaching and pulling out something, something moving, thrashing-
- A survivor from the church invasion. For a second, perhaps, the trainees had to wonder what happened to the children. If they were lucky, they would have been put out of their misery.
There was a loud thunk as the struggling victim was tossed against the floor right next to the tied trainees. They stared upwards, right at Dakota and Clerise with wide eyes, mouth gagged, struggling to break out of their restraints. The stench of their sweat mixed with urine was overwhelming.
"Oh, humans, I love humans, delicious little humans." The Four Clans creature was speaking again as it walked, one deliberate step at a time. They pulled something out from the folds of their cloak, what looked like a black, squirming insect, a locust perhaps, wriggling, with one too many legs. The thing hissed and screeched, uttering an entirely otherworldly sound. The horsemen knelt over the human victim, index and thumb squeezing the locust gently, as they grabbed the man's hair and yanked upwards, pressing the insect right into their ear. "Shhhhhh...."
The man was yelling through his gag now, eyes white, wild, fear coming out in pungent waves of sweat. "Shhhhhh, my children need to feed, they need nourishment."
Slowly, the parasite unlatched itself from the horsemen's fingers, antenna wriggling as it moved its legs around to locate its host. It only took mere seconds, as it crawled right into the man's ear, a horrible pause, and then the survivor suddenly shrieking, body twitching and writhing against the ground, the floorboards groaning. He spasmed once, twice, eyes bulging out, blood trickling out from his nose, ears-
- He fell to the ground seconds later, unmoving, staring blankly right at the two trainees he faced-
- Clerise and Dakota would get the worst of the damage as the body exploded, bursting into a spray of blood and flesh - of matted hair and pieces, chunks of skin - as something else burst out from its body. A large black centipede, though it was changing fast, black legs forming into wings, warping, distorting -
- Until the very same creature that had killed Stan that had nearly killed them, that lay, hundreds, in the tunnels stared back, flexing its motley wings. It tested its newly born claws one more time before digging its beak right into the remaining chunks of the victim, of the man, the man who was lying there, who had become fodder for these horsemen.
"Now." The robed creature in charge, took another step forward, pulling out another black insect. It screeched as well, legs wriggling as if searching for human contact. "How about we play a little game here, yes a fun game I would think, yes? One of you will tell me everything you possible know about Hunters, about where you've been and oh, about the item you took from me yes, you know which one, or-"
- They suddenly grabbed Eva by the hair, forcing her to tilt her head sideways, forcing the parasite over her ear, just bare inches. "She will become the next fodder for our clan."

Clerise woke up with a groan, attempting to shift to little avail. Heavy and coarse rope bound her, wrists and arms tied behind her back, thoroughly incapacitated.
It only took one inhalation for the girl to splutter at the torrent of foul odors, tired and aching and terrified. This was not Deus, not in any way. Breathing through her mouth, Clerise attempted to survey her location- the bottles screamed 'bar' and--
Oh.
She stared up at the creature, violently struggling for a moment, hyperventilating as it talked, sobbing at the sight of another human there, terrified and afraid and--
Clerise Nicole Wilson did not think she was a squeamish woman, but the sight of an insect sliding into a person's ear was too much to bear-- she tightly shut her eyes, sobbing, and--
The explosion coated her and Dakota both. Desperately, Clerise coughed, spitting to get some of the...skin and who knows what out of her mouth, locking eyes with Dakota for a moment, eyes wild with fear and horror and disgust.
She was too busy losing her lunch from Deus' cafeteria from just this afternoon to answer the question. She at least had the courtesy not to puke in the direction of her teammates.

Dakota woke with a start as the water seeped down him. It dribbled from his head onto his neck, down his spine. His reaction was shudder before he felt the gag and ropes tying him to the chair. His initial thought process was slow though and hard to focus as he tried to connect what was going on. He tested the bonds before blinking at the creature.
He shook though as he got a clearer view of the monster before grunting. ********, his strength was out and he was at the mercy of a ******** halloweener. He kept his mouth shut though as he waited for the other hunters to come to.
What did it mean more hunters? What did it want to know...He jerked in reaction to the creatures immediate action to grab something PAST them and blinked as a survivor was pulled out. s**t, ********. The children were the first on his mind and he hope that somewhere, God would look down on them and pity at least the children. Because there would be no pity here. Dakota attempted to steel himself for what was coming.
An example? A hostage? Dakota wondered just how the halloweener would go about this. He shivered though as the clacks on his ear started to grate on him. When the victim was tossed in front of him though, he couldn't help but meet they man's eyes. Dakota, 18 years old, A hunter trainee was not ready for what he was about to witness.
"Wha-" His voice broke out as the insect crawled into the man's head, kinda of like a bad remake of Transformers when Shia Lebouf was being-Okay so not the time for this Dakota....He wriggled in his bonds as the man started to scream. "Stop!" He shouted at the horsemen, "Stop! The ******** you think you are-" He watched in horror and fascination as the man bled from his ears...Nose. Dakota attempted to process...Internal brain damage most likely, he ******** what had the moon training help him with? ********. He stared at the man on the ground, eyes white as they stared at him. The first time he watched someone die...The first time-
And it wasn't over until the body exploded all over Dakota and Clerise. Blood painted him from head to toe, he could feel the weight of flesh and skin, smell the stench of copper..COULD TASTE THE RICH FULLNESS OF BLOOD Before he started yelling.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" Dakota struggled in his chair now as the beast escaped the remains of the man's body, tears somewhere started to come out before he looked at his team mates. Blood made a eerie stain on his cheeks. He squeezed his eyes shut though and tried to calm him self, How did one ******** calm themselves after seeing a body explode? After seeing a monster come out. He was so quiet now, his eyes shut it would almost seem like he was unconscious. When he opened his eyes though, they were blank and soulless. Like he had regressed himself farther into himself.
He barely even flinched as Eva was threatened as he stared blankly at the remains on the ground.
