May followed Alex but wasn’t nearly as sure footed as her companion. She had to pay attention to where she stepped. She also took a few seconds to listen quietly every few steps. She could start to hear birds in the trees and other noises elsewhere in the swampy wood.

Alex glanced up to the sky. She too could hear the birds and was trying to see if she could locate any of them in the tree tops. But she wasn't having much luck. So she put her nose to the ground and began to smell for any signs of prey that she knew and had hunted before.

She could hear the birds in the trees but didn’t think she could climb up fast enough to catch them, but perhaps she could find a few nests. She didn’t know if Alex ate eggs or not so she looked at the other female. Alex seemed intent on something so May didn’t bother her. Instead she moved to the base of a tree and started to climb. She could find out latter.

Alexandra's nose finally picked up something that she knew. Rabbits. Under the wet, dirt, swampy smell it was there. Her tail wagged happily at catching a scent. "Do you smell that?" She asked.

Smell something? May was too busy climbing up the tree to really focus much on smells. “ah no.” She half turned her head to look at Alex. Her tail thumped once against the trunk while she kept climbing.

Alexandra glanced back and noticed Maya wasn't behind her but she could hear her. This caused her to look up which is where she found the other vixen. She was up a tree. "I think I hear a rabbit. I'll be right back and check it out okay? Or do you prefer that I dont?"

“uh have fun.” May smiled down at the other vixen before continuing her plan of action. “I’m good.” Well good-ish but that was close enough for May. She knew her prey was close so all she’d have to do is wait until the time was right and she caught sight of it.

Alexandra flashed May a grin before dashing off after her small furry prey. She moved swift and silently through the swamp. Her ears informing her of the movement of the rabbit. She slowed down to a jog as she approached the location. Now it was just time to sit and wait for one of the rabbits to pop its head out of its home.

Finishing her climb up the tree she crawled up to the branch that would give her a better view. It didn’t take her long and she found two nests in the tree and a third out on a branch that she was pretty sure she could reach. Looking down at the small little eggs in the nest May hesitated. Could she really take and eat these cute little unborn babies? It just didn’t seem right.

Alexandra's patients paid off. A rabbit who thought the coast was clear decided to venture out of the safety of its home just a bit to far. With a burst of speed she launched herself at it. It let out a frightened noise and tried to escape. After a few moments of struggle she had it down.

Hearing a screech off in the woods May froze an nearly fell out of the tree. Acting quickly she clung to it and saved herself but it took a few moments to adjust so she was safely lying on a branch again. She looked at the nest again with a sigh. If she didn’t get the eggs then Alex might go hungry and that wasn’t fair to the fox that had helped her so much. Staring at the eggs she kept wrestling with herself.

Alexandra felt bad while the little rabbit squealed and cried under her paw that was holding it down. She knew it was the circle of life and that it needed to be done but the cry did tug on her heart strings a bit. Taking in a deep breath she snapped its neck silencing the creature forever. She whispered a little prayer for the rabbits spirit before picking it up and heading back to Maya with it.

She couldn’t do it. As hungry as she was she couldn’t just kill the little birds waiting to be born. Backing down out of the tree she slid down slowly trying to think of what she could say to Alex. Sitting at the base of the tree she noticed the mother bird fly back to the nest to check on the eggs. A part of her smiled. She was happy for the mother bird that she still had her eggs. That didn’t help her hungry stomach though.

Alexandra kept a good grip on the rabbit as she bounded back the way she came. Her steps were quick but careful. Her movements seemed graceful and confident as she went. Once she made it back to the spot where she had left Maya she set the rabbit down and panted slightly to catch her breath. "May...Maya ...are you there?" She called between breaths.

Hearing Alex call out May circled the tree she was sitting under. There Alex was panting with a rabbit as her kill. May smiled happy for Alex at least now Alex had something she could eat since May couldn’t bring herself to snag the meal that had been presented. “Looks like you have something, sorry I couldn’t get anything.” She half shrugged feeling a bit guilty.
