Status: FailLucas just couldn't believe his damn luck. Apparently all he had to do was kiss someone who hated them and they'd fall for him. He had to admit, his farm boy charm was legendary around those who'd been with him before, but he tended not to mingle with other hunters. What a loss. It was somewhat satisfying to see the younger man lose control. In another time...in another place, he would have enjoyed taking the time to get to know both of them...better. Then someone was devoured. And Mya was clasping his hand, the ordinarily strong woman struggling to cope with what was happening. Why hadn't he just let them to die as two hopeless saps? He squeezed her hand as his mind raced. He wasn't a 28 year-old hunter because he did stupid things. But he wasn't helping with the barrier at all. And maybe...maybe he could buy them all some time. Maybe he could do some damage before he went if he took the offensive. Shooting Julien a warning look he all but pulled Mya from his grasp and enfolded the slightly shorter woman into his arms. "You didn't think I'd let anything like that happen to you youngin's did you? Now your a Moon hunter missy. You get out there and you set those barriers." He released her but still held her hand before grabbing one of Julien's. "You two are in love. I can see it. I've seen that lovey-dovey junk around too many times before. Now you both just couldn't help yourself with a stud like me around. It was just physical with us, wasn't nothin' special." He took a step back. "You two take care of each other." With that little monologue over he tossed his prized box of beef bandages to Mya and turned and ran. But not away. No he headed to some of the darkest shadows he could find. He took out Bessy, holding the shotgun calmly and closed his eyes. All he had now was hunter's intuition. And a chance to buy the stupid little kids some time. He was almost past his prime anyway, and there was no ******** way he'd go sit on some council. "Well Horseman," he said with a chuckle, "its just me and you now." And then he fired in the direction he sensed was the best option, unloading both barrels before starting to reload. Zoobey Lucas is ready to be the next one taken~

It was difficult to block out the sounds he heard, but frankly, Lex couldn't afford to care. Couldn't stop to feel any remorse for the fallen hunter. It was no one he knew and it was part of their job. A very grim part of being a hunter. Though, he could easily imagine that being Cody or Becca too...
No! Can't think like that.
"I hear ya. This friggin rain is making things shrivel that don't have any right to!" Lex grinned cheekily, giving Cody a knowing look.
Lex gripped the dagger again, breathing in slowly to do this carefully. While trying not to suck in a gallon of water at the same time. Goddamn blasted thing! He sighed and glared at the dagger, willing it to do it's thing properly and hoping (as foolish as it might be) that his fellows could get their daggers set up too.
"C'mon, Librarian! Don't make me one up you over and over again, here!" He paused. "And in all honesty, I fully agree. Would much rather be...doing something other than this." They were Fear hunters! Wasn't it their job to protect the runic hunters? Then why, why were they having to do this job?

"Are you sure its the rain and it wasn't that shriveled to begin with?" He asked, biting his lip; forcing himself to keep a serious face. The last thing he--everyone needed was for him to start laughing, especially at a time like this. Because he was sure no one would appreciate it.
"Oh shut up, Duunce!" He stabbed the dagger into the ground, annoyed that the other mist hunter was having far more luck than he was. Just once he'd love things to go ri-- "Shi--" What little progress that had been made with the barrier, was destroyed in an instant, as the dagger slid out of place again.
"Okay, that so was not my fault--t-there was... ice..." He added the last part lamely. If he had really been smart, he would have added cement to his defense.

Failed!

W-what was going on? Lucas was not running away in terror. Then again the man had kissed Julien first. And this was just too damned confusing. Julien was way too confused to properly process all this s**t. Then that thing came back to devour another student. Julien didn't know what to do, or say, or how to react. He just stared in horror as it happened. Then Lucas was talking, and roughly took Julien's hand. His hands were rough, calloused and... well a hunter's hand. Julien's hand was just the same, it was just weird feeling. He hadn't ever considered another dude in such a manner, but... what the hell was all this? It wasn't like his feelings for Mya were gone and done. He still loved her, and what was Lucas talking about?!? "You two take care of each other."What?! He was just... running off... towards that thing!! Julien turned and went to work, doing what he needed to and slamming the dagger into place again. Lucas was off and dying and... nothing made sense. Nothing in the world made sense anymore. He knew a few things though. He had Robert, he was a hunter, and he loved Mya Jones. "Mya... I love you. That's something that'll never change dear. I love you like a man loves a woman, and I'll love you no matter what the ******** happened tonight or what's going to happen. Let's ******** do this." Tears, there were tears streaming down his pale face. This was not the first time Julien had cried in front of Mya, but he had always done so before like a sissy. Now he was ignoring his tears and doing his damned job. There was nothing else to do. <...I can't even figure out what the ******** is going on....> Don't worry Robert, everything will be okay... I just... I just need to concentrate. ramenli **inner Julien** Noooooooo Lucassssssssss Success! Dagger #1

Mya continued to shake, like her brain just could not process nor handle what was happening anymore. Her hands were gripping the two mens hands tight, so tight, her nails were likely to draw blood. She'd never felt so terrified in all of her life as she watched the hunter woman get consumed, right in front of her boyfriend. And Mya knew the same thing was going to happen to her, eventually. How could it not? They hadn't been able to get this barrier set up, not even close, and they had no experience fighting anything like this before. Not to mention the fact that she was picking them off, one by one, and the less of them there were too do the barrier... Suddenly she noticed that Lucas was saying something, she shook her head, trying to clear it. It was like her mind was trying to shut itself down as a last ditch defense mechanism. But Lucas was talking, and what he had to say was important, and she needed to listen. "I..I..I.." was all she could manage to squeak out as he took her hand in his and told her to get that barrier set up. His words went on repeat in her brain, like they were suddenly the most important thing in the world, and she just needed to hold on to those words, if she couldn't hold on to anything else. And then Lucas was pulling Julien from her grasp, and her chest tightened as the cold tendrils of a panic attack began to creep their way up her body, making her feel almost paralyzed. Where is he going is he taking Julien oh my god they're just going to leave me. The words swam through her head, and without thinking, she reached her hand out slowly, mechanically. "NO.." She gasped. "Don't take him..." But that wasn't what was happening. She suddenly realized she was holding something against her chest in her other arm. Beef bandages? When had she gotten those? But when she looked back up to ask Lucas, he was moving away, in slow motion, away from her. But Julien was still there, and he was crying. "Don't cry Julien..." She almost said, but when her mouth opened, the words wouldn't even come out. Was he shouting at her? Of course he was, and she remembered now, that he didn't love her anymore. NoNo NO. Julien did love her. She knew that in her heart, in her soul, with every fibre of her being. He loved her, and he was telling her that right now. He was crying, but it was just tears, nothing more. It wasn't the childish sobs like she was used to from him, it was nothing like what she had grown accustomed to. Slowly the feeling came back into her limbs, slowly the chill that had overcome her began to seep away. The world came crashing back to her, the sounds came back full volume, movements went back into real time. Lucas had left them to continue with what they started, and she needed to get back to work. "Yes." She said, firmly, "I love you too, and I always will. Now lets ******** do this." She grabbed another dagger from her belt, her last one, and slammed it into the ground with fierceness. Then, she began to laugh, as she watched Lucas firing his gun in the distance. "TAKE THAT YOU ********! GO LUCAS!!!" She cheered, then leaned forward to grab ahold of Julien once again, pulling him to her side. "If you even think about leaving me I will beat you to death myself and leave you for the ******** horseman." She growled at him, then pulled him down for another kiss. Who knew when it would be their last. Success! Dagger # 2

"Quite positive, buttercup! I can show you if you really, really wanted proof." Were they in the middle of a suicide mission? Check! Was he lacking in snark and cheekiness? Nope. And of course, Cody didn't seem to be lacking in retorts and comebacks either. Lex couldn't help be let a fond, warm smile grace his lips for an instant before it flickered away.
"Prove me wrong then! I'm doing all the work, here!" Not really, but teasing Cody was better than facing the grimness before them. And it was keeping them focused on their task. Instead of, say, being idiots and going after that damned horsewomen.
::What is that, six times in a row now? Eight maybe?:: Mordy mused, though that hint of...something was still there.
Lex sighed heavily. "Really, Cody? Ice?" The hunter reached down and snagged the first small rock (about the size of a pebble) he could get, his own dagger attempt fumbling and failing. While that was just fine and dandy, now wasn't it? He gripped the rock in his hand, then chucked it over at his companion. "At least come up with better excuses, Librarian!"

Cody wrinkled his nose.
"Keep it in your pants, Duunce." If anything, these little bouts of bickering was doing him wonders to calm his mind.
"Doing all the work, blah blah blah--You know, someday I'm going to show you up." He mock scowled, waving the dagger at him. Seriously! It wasn't his fault that the dagger refused to stay in place. Honest! It was being stubborn! Lex was just lucky. Or maybe it was the patch of ground he was working with. Perhaps it was was softer or something--either way, there must have been a catch.
Sighing, Cody immediately leaned forward in an attempt to dodge the small projectile that flew at him. A small projectile that had been thrown at the cost of Lex fumbling his own dagger.
"Ohoh? Not so high and mighty now, are ya?" He asked, eyes narrowed as he stuck his own dagger into the ground. Which, to his surprise, stayed in place. "And looks like I kept my word on showing you up."

Mmmmm... what was that delicious smell? It was stronger now, all of their fears, as they played with their tiny weapons and failed over and over again, humourous almost.
There was one insect now, the source of that smell, their voice crying louder than the others, beautiful, delicate, so precariously imbalanced. Her stomach churned and gurgled again, she wanted to eat them all. Oh, the others wouldn't mind if she had just one more bite right? She had been waiting all this time for them, it was rude of them to make her wait so long!
And look how cute, that one insect was trembling. The horsemen placed her bony fingers on top of his shoulders, breathing just a little above his ear, trying to be careful, trying to be delicate. "We love your .... mmm.... death.... fear...." Her voice trailed off as she continued to stroke her prey with her hand fondly, lovingly almost. "That is why we shall consume you."
Where Warden might have expected finally the Horsemen to snap him up, to take him, free him, in that single moment where his heart pounded too fast and too slow at the same time, the Horsemen of Famine moved away from him, disappearing back into the fog and shadows. Only the echo of her voice remained ringing in his ears.
"That is why we shall consume you last."

The shadows rustled again, shifted black and grey in front of Warden's eyes.
He couldn't think. Couldn't breathe.
Billie was not gone. It was a lie.
It had to be a lie.
For almost ten years now he had waited worked as a Hunter. Ten years of grueling, dangerous work at which he could have lost his life at any moment, ten years of working hard, dedicating his entire life, his entire being to being a Hunter.
And then four years ago he had met Billie, and suddenly his life had held meaning again.
He could feel the monster stepping towards him, taste the coppery tang of blood in the air even as her cold, boned fingers slid over his shoulders. It was only with the greatest of self restraint that Warden managed not to shiver in disgust; as it was he merely tilted his head up, eyes flickering to where she was, feeling her cold, dead breathe against his skin.
Let me die.
He had never been one for gushy emotions; never pushed public affection at another. What he held inside of himself for Billie was private; it had been no one else's business but his own, which meant that he was used to keeping himself calm.
His heart snapped in his chest, loud and unnerving.
-- Warden... -- whispered Tee desperately, but he said nothing, instead waiting for that last final blow.
Except it didn't happen.
Why had it not happened?
Instead of moving closer, the monster had disappeared, her feather light touch still lingering on his shoulders, her voice callously amused.
"That is why we shall consume you last."
...no.
No. That's not how it's supposed to go.
"NO!"
The word ripped from his mouth, Warden's scream echoing as he staggered to his feet, eyes blazing.
"You filthy, shitty, horrible - "
The rest of his curses were left to the imagination, the anger and frustration at his situation filling Warden with a rage so fierce it nearly blinded him.
They can't do this to me.
But he still had a mission to do. Still had a chance to try and protect those that were innocent.
Furiously Warden grabbed a barrier dagger and slammed it with as much force as he could into position
Don't play with me anymore.

Moore shook his head, a sort of clarity coming back to him as a result of the motion. Two down. Two Hunters who he should have stood up and protected. Ever since he had received the message that had brought him first back to Deus Ex and then here, the man had been in a haze. Well, that wouldn't do. He turned toward the sound of Warden's cries, blinking slowly as he prepared to place his next barrier dagger. That was passion. That was regret and fear and all the emotions he should have been feeling in response to losing two humans to that monster.
He looked up into the mist as a deep crackling sounded through his headset. Everything was going wrong. Everything was going as expected. Moore cursed softly as he fumbled again, his dagger rendering the first two in this chain useless.

Lex rolled his eyes. And then wiped a hand quickly across his face again. The rain was annoying. Really annoying. He didn't blame Cody one bit for complaing about it before.
"Your loss~" He called back sweetly.
Someday... Lex felt a small - very small locked away - part of him cringe. That word...it haunted him. Plauged him even. -Someday. Someday I'll tell them, Rin. I promise!-
::Lexington...now is not...the time.::
He shook his head, shaggy hair sticking to his face. "Well, well. What do ya know? The Librarian actually can do something right!" Of course, he'd fudged up his attempt at getting his dagger in place in the process of throwing the rock. But at least Cody had gotten his dagger set. "Maybe I was just trying to look bad so you had a chance?" Lex said dryly, gripping the dagger and aiming to shove it in place. But the rain made his grip falter and the blade all but slipped out of his hands.
"Fu~!" Damnit! This was never going to happen, was it? No, it so totally was! If it was the last thin he had to do, that barrier was getting erected, goddammit! "Stupid...good for nothing...pain in the a**...rain..."

They were failing as a group. Julien's pale eyes glanced around, and deep inside he knew they were doomed. They'd all join the two girls who were devoured and it'd be a horrible way to kick the bucket. He glanced at Robert, and knew it'd be kinder to kill them all with the sword than let them be taken by that thing. But Julien wasn't the type of guy to do such a thing. Not even for Mya or himself. Lucas went out fighting, so he would too. But even as he attempted to get the stupid runic dagger in place, it failed. He was a FEAR hunter. What the hell was he supposed to know about these things anyways?! Runic weapons are really stupid.
Then Mya was pretty much yelling at him. Julien couldn't help but start to laugh when she cut him off with a kiss. Sweet, soft, amazing... kissing Mya wasn't like his man on man kiss. It was good in a very different way. Maybe he batted for both teams. What a thing to figure out right before death. He'd never be able to fully enjoy or explore this branch of life.
"Mya, my Mya, I'd never leave you. You're my soul mate darling, and nothing will change that. I just... I... well, ********. Might as well bare my soul some more. I think I like men too. If for some reason we live past this, I'd like to suggest some adventures in our future."
Might as well ******** cover my bases. I really wish Lucas hadn't gone off like that, but I figure we're going to die might as well be honest with my soul mate. She ******** deserves it.

"So you say." Cody called back, just as sweetly. Needless to say, he wasn't convinced.
"So you failed... twice. Not just once, but twice, just to make me feel better...?" There was a long silent stare at his friend before the mist hunter finally snorted and gave a shake of his head; spraying droplets of water into the air. "Sorry bro. Not buying it. Just admit it. You're not as good as you claimed to be." He mocked, slamming the dagger into the ground a second time.

She was getting bolder now, she watched them struggle and knew, with the most vicious of smiles, that they were helpless. There lay in her bowl, all her food, decorated, well-prepared. Sure, the others had always chastised her for her bad manners playing with food-
- Yet it wasn't her fault. They begged for it, didn't they see? They wanted to be special they wanted to be important.
"Shhhhhh...." She strode up to her next prey, two interesting insects who were doing a horrible job of not noticing her. She held one exaggerated finger to her lips, her form compact again, a feminine figure for the most part. "Shhh... it'll be over soon, the rain, all of the rain."
Famine opened her mouth wide, ribs gurgling delightedly as they stretched, disfiguring her figure into a giant abyss of teeth. She swallowed both of them. Oniongrump Cody is DEAD. Make this their last hurrah before moving on to her death soloKyrieko Lex is DEAD.
