Well speaking from me..someone who does have bipolar disorder and is living with a chronic disease, I can tell you, antidepressants saved my life. I had anxiety so bad I went to the hospital numerous times thinking I was having a heart attack or something else. And it really depends on the person truly...I need them also for my disease, they help. I think to each their own smile

They can help, but some people might need things that he/she can't get from a medication. It's good, but it's not going to fix all your problems. Sure, people withh depression might wanna take some anti-depressents, but....They're ok.

I try not to take drugs unless I really need them. They make you feel fake somehow. So I say, take them until you're ready to deal with your [whatever you have], then try to get off them.

I already had this discussion in my Psychology class. I reckon that putting people on drugs is no solution to a problem, it's just supressing them and hiding them away. I mean, what are we teaching kids when we make them go on drugs instead of getting help and love which is better for them? Is supressing the feelings the only way out? Our parents problems were ignored, our problems are being 'solved' with drugs, what are our kids gonna deal with? I was told by my friends, who I trusted, that I needed drugs, because I was screwed up. That's not cool. I know a lot of people who get really picked on beacause they're on mood-altering medication, not just anti-depressants.

I think they can do wonders (my mum's on them and they've really helped her) but at the same time I'm terrified I'll end up on them myself. I don't like taking medication for anything and I don't want to take something which can change my whole personality...

[((Velociraptor))] Hey everybody. I was just curious what you all thought. I heard anti-depressants had awful side effects, but I also heard they are the best thing to have during teenage years. Of course you should go to a doctor first.... o.o They are one of the worse things to have durring your teen years. Te idea put forth my the medical comminuty thatthey're a fix-all is bullshit.
First off, most of these drugs are tested on adults. They have a much different reaction in teens. Second, they are may over-perscribed. Instead of soul-searching for answers, or confronting the cause of one's depression, it's quick-fix. And finally there are the 'side effects'. Tough if you ask me, increacing suicidal thoughs is an effect, no a side note. These drugs are known to do that in teenagers.
Take it from someone who's been down that path, on several f the drugs, including homeopathic ones, prozac derivitives, and herbal shite. They work for a small group of people. But anyone telling you they're great just'cause you're a teen is full of s**t. They can ******** over your life, stunt emotional developement, as well as a number of other unpleasant things.
It took me hearing the 'doctor' saying "Lets up him to 350 milligrams a day, there's still no improvement" for me to realize it. Don't make the same mistakes I did.

Yes but sometimes people fall to deep into depression and think things that are not true; feelings of low self worth, no one cares for them, people want that person to do harm to them self. When in truth its the person with the depression pushing people away and causing the problem of other people having difficulties interacting. Sometimes drugs are the answer sometimes they are, but some sort of treatment should be given. I refused drug treatments when I had my own issues and instead took therapy with my family.

well, if my bf doesn't take them, he gets all pissy and seems suicidal because his childhood was full of his mother being in a coma for 6 months and the doctors always wanting to take her off life support and it was because they were always doing drugs and never told him and lied to himfor many years....i need them because i lost so many family members at once wheni was little, inlcuding my best friend in the whole world in 2nd grade. I never really took it in until a few weeks ago. sad

People should chose if they want anti depresents unless it`s in an extreme case. Now a days, drug companies just want to make more cash by pumping a huge number of pills into little kids that don`t need them. I mean it`s good for the people that need anti depresents to not kill themselves, but there has to be a more standerdized control on who should take them. Too many people are turning to pharmisutical drugs to solve all their problems. But people I know who have to take them say that they don`t really work because it`s just an extremely temporary effect. Personally I believe that people should explore many different types of therapy and use them for a last resort. And no, I`m not a happy go lucky person that the world bows to. I`ve somehow forced myself to bury my many underlying insecurites of self worthlessness and deppresion. But I don`t think I could ever use drugs.

i hate anti-depressants. They are not good for teenagers. Their minds are not yet developed enough to handle a massive change. Anti-depressents work by blocking off the production of certain chemicals to try and regulate them. THis is a great idea on the surface, until you realize that this actualy causes a very unstable problem in the underdeveloped brain of a teen. The other chemicals, such as anger are not surpressed which makes these to out produce the chemicals of sadness nd happiness. Anger is the worst possible side effect. Anger can cause one to do horrible things. Counciling is a better route to go.

Kikyo891 I do not see how a medicine can change how your mind is. They change the chemical imbalances, not your opinions.
