hm... well, the first time I ever heard the music from PotO was when I was about... 7 or so, I think. I remember the Overture/Theme scared the living poop out of me at that age. I hid under the piano when I first heard it, actually... sweatdrop
So, since that time I had merely known about it, but didn't know anything about it. Then I noticed that a bunch of my buddies had to read the French version of the novel for their French classes. Finally, I got hooked when my aunt brought in the original 1986 soundtrack while I was on a service project in her class (she's a teacher). All I could think was, 'I MUST SEE/HAVE THIS PLAY/MOVIE!!!' And I've been a total nut for it ever since.

It started just about one year and a half ago , in one little and dirty town called Boulogne-sur-mer. My parents had invited me to go to a concert where they preformed musicals. The concert went by, then suddenly I heard it. The music that would haunt me forever : Phantom Of The Opera. I held my breath , swallowing each note and cheering at the end. I came home and downloaded (shame shame shame) all the phantom songs who existed (this is how I discorvered Nightwish heart ) . My dear mother clearly annoyed by this obsession (I had been listening to the same song for 3 months sweatdrop ) decided to take me to london and go and see the show. I didn't know the story but was interessted so off we went to England. I falled in love with JOJ and the story was to become my life, my obsession. MWAHAHAHA
That's all ^^

Ooookay. I remember the first time I was really told alot about Phantom. I was watching my pain in the a** little brother outside the grocery store talking to my long-distance girlfriend on the phone. She was watching the movie (2004) and kinda narrarating it to me. Which went something along the lines of "Hmn... his face doesn't look so bad....eew... I would not go swimming in that water... hmn... Christine's stalling...that's actually pretty smart."
Then we kind of got into a role play in which our characters were in a production of PotO and things started happening to the actors which were very PotO-ish, it was all really a plot by the guy who was playing the Phantom to try to get the guy who was playing Christine... (yes guy... hooray for yaoi).
So yes, the night after the first day of the RP I woke up at 3 AM and couldn't sleep. So I flipped on On Demand and lo ans behold... PotO was there... so I watched and... tada...
But in all fairness I first heard Music of the Night when I was 9, it was on a mix of music that my mom's friend had sent her, it had LOTS of good showtunes... Man of La Mancha... Miss Saigon... Les Miserables... West Side Story... I miss that tape...

The thing that drew me in was hearing the music from the music. It was so beautiful and I was captivated at once.

when Wishbone was on the air i saw that cute little kiddie versian. in june, my father got the 2004 movie from the libaray. i was playing pokemon and i hardly paid attention to the screen untill the phantom showed up. i felt so ashamed that i did not really see the first bit. well, when i saw gerik, i was like " OH MY GOD!! the phantom is so hot!" and i fell in love with his voice and body. then when it came to the All I Ask Of You Reprise, i started crying my eyes out. at the end i was crying. after that, i was a fan. but the next day when i saw it 5 times, i was a true Phan, or so i thought... when i went looking for a phantom of the opera forum in the entertaniment area on gaia, i learned his real name, the fanfiction sites, the wonderful music from MC... i am currently reading Phantom by susan kay and i own the novel by leroux. heart heart

I was in an acting class and somebody held up a script for Phantom and they said "you must know this by heart." and i told them i knew nothing about it. So this girl lent me the original show soundtrack and i really liked the begining but some of the other songs i didnt really like. I liked Phantom of the Opera and i think Music of the Night but I was thinking who do they have as the Phantom? That guy sounds horrible! I thought the Phantom's got to be strong and angry at the world that cast him aside, not like somebodies crushing his nads...anway! Time goes by and I hear the movies coming out so I got kind of excited and my girlfriend at the time bought me the movie soundtrack and that's what really made me a Phan. I was like "Now that guy's a Phantom!" I probably for about three months stood in front of my mirror with the lights dimmed just lip sinking to the tracks sweatdrop COME ON WE'VE ALL DONE IT!!! I became obsesed at that point. I drew him alot. What really made me like the character and the story was I could relate to it. I am Erik! What's strange was my relationship with that girlfriend almost mirrored the show. In the end we didnt work, but you sometimes you have to learn to be lonely...

well, it was really kind of my mom who got me into it. i had never heard of the phantom of the opera...at all. the most i knew of him was that one guy who rows the boat. yeah, pathetic. so i was watching tv and i saw the commercial and heard the DUN!!!! DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN!!!! and it seemed eerily familiar...like i had heard it somewhere before (whenever theres a song like that i always feel like i have an emotional attachment to it). i wasnt very interested in the movie tho. then one day my moms all "hey lets go see phantom of the opera" me: *sighs*, well, i guess so mom: oh come on! you're gonna love it!!!! at the movie theatre, i came in with low expectations. the opening scene with the chandilier (sorry dont know how to spell that) and everything is in color and brand new and stuff, wow, that just blew me away. i remember thinking to myself "maybe this movie wont be so bad." i was amazed at the singing and thought "that cant be the real actors voices" but it was! my favorite scene was between the masquerede scene and the scene where phantom leads christine down to his lair. after that i just about went crazy. i bought the soundtrack and listen to it every day faithfully. i am going to read the book in a few days, just have to finish this other one. oh oh! and when i was a target i heard this faint "dun" and i was thinking "its my imagination...it cant be" but then i heard "dun dun dun dun dun" a little louder and i was like "ok follow the sound follow the sound follow the sound" so i did and then i came to an ipod with phantom songs on it!!! i was standing there listening contently with an evil grin while i looked down at the ipod. this guy came up to me and was all "miss, do you need help?" and i was like "no! im perfectly fine right here!" my dad had to practically pry me off of that thing. and i regret it too cuz its never there playing phantom songs anymore but i always look for it!

Alexis Of Shadow So what did you hear about/see/read that made you become obsessed with PotO? Why do you like it so much? What is your story as a phan? I thought it would be fun to compare experiences. I'm infamous for doing this. My first encounter was back when I was about seven or eight, and my mom was walking the dogs and I was bored so I turned on Wishbone and saw that episode and immediately became entranced with it. I remember feeling very sorry for Erik and wanting to be in the show myself. That was strange for me at that age because I had a weirdo fear of deformities, which makes me think that his deformity wasn't very bad at all, although I don't remember at all what he looked like. And then later I had talked my mom into going to see Lord of the Rings with me (don't remember which one) because I had nobody else to go with then, and I saw the preview for PotO and I remembered my obsession with it and nearly freaked out but pretended not to know what it was about so that my mom would talk about it. It was funny, I said something that was very uncharacteristic of me, from what I can remember, it was something like "That looks like a weird movie...it looks like it's been made before...what's it about?" even though I never say stuff like that when I don't know what the movie's about. But somehow it worked and my mom wasn't suspicious. Meanwhile I planned to see it somehow. Now, except for my talking about the weirder versions of the movie that I excuse away as having heard about from a friend who's a horror movie buff (who is sorta based on a real friend of mine) as well as talking her into renting the DVD of the original Lon Chaney version because "I wanted to see what it was about", she knows nothing of my secret life as a phan. Although she does say that I "will become obsessed" when I see the Lon Chaney version. I was thinking "The little you know...." Okay, I'll shut up before you all bash my head in, if you've even read down to this point gonk . I kept hearing about it and its versions on tv, and when we began singing this 7-minute medly of almost all the songs (condensed of course) I became interested. I went to see it and theaters and was immedietly in love with it. I bought it and watched it at least 20 more times. I read the book after that, and then several phanfics. YAY!

Well I was still a baby when ALW version first came out/was even thought of so I don't really remember when it was but I was young when my mom got the tape of the original london cast and started listening to it. Later when the tape broke/wore out she got the CDs. When I was little I used to not completely understand the story and I wondered if the Phantom was the bad guy cause I hadn't gotten into stories where there was no real bad guy just a sort of rival. As I got older and understood the story more I realized that the Phantom wasn't evil in fact he was alot like me most of my life I was made fun of and pushed away by people so I understood where he was coming from and began to really like him. Now I'm a very big POTO fan and Erik fan I own both the original London cast recording, the newer movie soudtrack, and the original book. 4laugh

My Phantom of the Opera obession began in 5th grade when my older sister Megan was singing it for choir and she wanted someone to practice it with her at home. So she somehow tricked me into helping her and before I knew it we were RP playing with the songs and would do kind of an ElfQuest/ Phantom of the Opera cross over. A few weeks later, my friend Megan (yes, they both have the same name >. heart ! After that I would rent the 1987 production soundtrack every change I could and memorized every lyric, of every part, of every song.
My love for POTO died a bit in middle school because I had other things on my mind all the time. In high school my friend Nick Simon told me that they were making a movie! And one of his other friends got a sneak peak to it! He told me how it was black and white in the begining and then burst into color! I was so excited! And in came out 8 days before my 16th birthday....8 days I waited until I saw it at 10:30 at night! It was amazing!
That summer (err last summer) I got to visit FRance and my sole purpose in Paris was to see the Opera House. There I bought the French Version of the book and the English Version when I got back. I loved the book so much I forced my brother to read it to and become addicted.
I bought tickets to the Nov. 15 show in June and went with my closest friends. Gary Mauer played the Phantom, and did...alright; not as good as Michael Crawford and Brad Little in my opinion. And well...that's my little rambling!

First: High school- took a class trip to the downtown theatre which is famous, but will remain unnamed for security reasons, watched it there and fell in love with the special effects that the theatre had. (IE: rolling fog banks, pyro technics, and cool sound effects) Second: Senior in High School: Same as above only better and closer seating. Parents bought the tickets and I traveled with my sister to the program at the same location. Third: NEW YORK! I saw the opera on Broadway! Critiquing... Not as good as the other theatre in Top secret location, I loved it better there than on Broadway. Amazing huh?
