Alright class! I think your next lesson is upon us. So, your assignment will be to find a plant and tell us about some reasons why it's important to protect it or alternatively, why do we need protecting from it?

(A few sentences will be ok, and you could make it up and be creative, I understand Herbology isn't really a major feature of Harry's studies... >.<)

Deadline: Monday 15th November 8pm (GMT)!

If you have any questions, leave them here or if you finish early, I can mark it and give you your marks earlier. :3

Heart of Ravenclaw

Herbology Assignment: Aconite/ Monkshood/ Wolfsbane

Aconite has two other names, which are monkshood and wolfsbane. Found in the wild, this plant's leaves are highly toxic, but its flowers are ingredients in some potions, such as the wolfsbane potion. The potion reduces lycanthropy's symptoms (it does not cure them, though). Without it, werewolves would be in way more trouble when they transform into their lupine form. Remus Lupin is known to have used the potion, brewed by Severus Snape.

Thank you Professor for helping me out earlier. I'll be practicing that spell.

I've written my assignment on the Panacea tree.
(I'm not sure whether this is in the books, though I'm leaning towards that it wasn't. I found it in this chapter of a fan fic. I've written what I can based off what the author writes and partly what I've made up myself).

      Quote:
      Panacea tree
The Panacea tree is one of the rarest and most beautiful magical trees in the world. They grow in glades deep within magical forests and most resemble ordinary birch trees, though revealing their true selves in the moonlight. These trees turn into a shiny black-blue colour with spots sparkling down it's trunk, mirroring the night sky. Like the birch tree, it's bark easily peals off to reveal the highly coveted Panacea sap. This rare sap has healing properties and can be used in any way possible: to smear over wounds, used as an ingredient in food or simply consumed raw. It is the closest one may find to rivaling the healing properties of Phoenix tears and can heal any ailment in the same way.
The tree itself has been hunted and logged for years. All manner of witches and wizards have searched for this almighty tree in hopes of selling it's rich sap and as a result, the trees numbers have dwindled. Unfortunately, the tree cannot be planted via conventional means. It seems to sprout on it's own accord. Much research has been made into this and lots of speculation has been made - that the tree can only grow amongst certain other magical plants, that only one who has used the tree for good may spread it's seed - though none of it has been conclusive. Due to the rarity and importance of this tree, the Ministry of Magic has passed decrees to the protection of it, though this hasn't increased it's population by any means. Lobby groups for the protection of rare magical plants ask that if ever one comes across the tree, that they may only take the sap sparingly and that the whereabouts of the tree remain secret.

"Here's my homework, professor." Meiko said smiling as she passed her paper to the professor and pranced to her seat:

Homework:

A Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has a root that looks like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows).

Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake's screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours. When Hogwarts students study Mandrakes in Herbology class, Pomona Sprout had the students wear earmuffs to protect their ears from the Mandrake's cries.

When matured, can be cut up to serve as a prime ingredient for the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which is to cure those who have been petrified.

Homework:

Devil's Snare

Devil's Snare is composed of a mass of soft, springy tendrils and vines that possess some sense of touch. Devil's Snare uses its creepers and tendrils to ensnare anyone who touches it, binding their arms and legs and eventually choking them. The harder a person struggles against Devil's Snare, the more faster and more tightly it binds them; if they relax, it will not kill them as quickly. Devil's Snare prefers a dark, damp environment and shrinks away from fire, so a well-placed flame spell such as "bluebell flames" will drive it away from its victims.

Homework:

Mimbulus Mimbletonia

A very rare plant, origin believed to be in Assyria. It's small and grey, said to look similar to the muggle plant known as a 'cactus'.

Most notable for it's pulsating and squirming nature and it's unique defense mechanism. When prodded, stinksap is squirted from the boils on the surface of the plant. Stinksap is a non-poisonous liquid and is described as dark green and smelling like rancid manure.

Further on in it's development it makes an odd crooning noise when touched.

It can be used as an antidote for nervousness, shyness, and timidity.

Homework:
Trichosclereids
Trichosclereids are hard needlelike branched cells found in some species of plants that serve the purpose of protecting the plant from herbivores. They usually are approximately 6 mm long, but in some species they grow to as long as 1 cm. Trichosclereids are also magical and powerful because once its touched, it will give out poisonous gas and once you smell it your nerves will stop its function and worse, you may die.

Ciara fishes out a clean bit of parchment and began to work on the newest assignment:

Mandrake/Mandragora:
The Mandrake root is a powerful restorative. It forms an essential part of most antidotes, including one for Petrification. The Mandrake Restorative Draught returns people who have been Transfigured or cursed to their original state. Mandrake seedlings are tufty little plants, purplish green in color with what look like tiny babies growing where the roots would be. These creatures grow and develop over the course of several months until they mature and can be harvested and used for potions. The cry of the Mandrake is fatal to humans, so special care must be taken when growing them. Even as a baby, the Mandrake's howls can knock a person out for a couple of hours.

An owl flies into the greenhouse and drops a red envelope. It unfolds itself into a mouth and shrieks:

Professor Stars-hime is ill and so has to take an absence of leave, she sends her apologies and reminds all the pupils to not walk into the darkness of the greenhouse. Any pupils who have yet to complete the homework have an extension until the end of the week. For those who have completed the assignment, would 15 house points be too generous?

Now, you may stay to water and prune the plants, carefully, but do not even try to interact with any of the magical plants that we've yet to cover. Or the devil's snare. Again.

Take care!

The envelope then exploded but left a chalky white impression of all that it had said on the blackboard.

Heart leaps as the red envelope tumbles from the owl. Knowing what it is, she quickly covers her ears before it could start screeching, but nevertheless, she still could hear the message from Professor Stars. She uncovers her ears after the howler finishes delivering its words and grins. She takes some shears and a watering can, filling the yellow container with water from a nearby faucet.

Since Meiko had nothing else in mind to do, she grabbed her wand and went in front of the plants.
"Aguamenti." she uttered as she pointed her wand producing a jet of water towards the plants.

After watering them, she sighs as she returned to her sear, doodling on her scroll.

Pouring the water onto the plants nearby, Heart hums a happy tune. She snips at the plants with her shears from time to time, and after she finishes, she removes her gloves, heading over to her desk.

Being awfully bored, Meiko decided to talk to someone. She spotted Heart just a table from her. She smiled as she walked to where she was. "Hey, Heart... it's such a nice day, isn't it?" she chuckled as she scratched the back of her head out of shyness, not knowing what to say to her out of boredom.
