I really enjoy Hi-Chew gummy candies. They have great flavor, they're fun to eat, and they are CHEAP-almost cheaper than some American brands, like Jelly Belly. I consider myself something of a gummy connosieur, so these are top-notch sweets.
I LOVE Pocky. The sesame and special flavors are really quite good, even the bitter chocolate one! I don't much care for the matcha green tea flavor though... a bit on the pasty side.
Until now, I've never had a Japanese snack I didn't totally love. I actually buy things from Asian markets, but I won't purchase anything I can't read the label of.
One should bear in mind, however, that even here in the states, we have some odd candy-flavors! For example, Jelly Belly makes the Buttered Popcorn bean, Vomit, Grass, Dirt, and a few other Harry-Potter themed flavors, not to mention more low-quality chocolates and dollar-store sweets than you can shake a Chico-stik at.

I think I've ODed on Pocky and those Salad sticks. xp I can no longer eat them. They make me want to, uh, lose my lunch. I don't know, I rather like the none generic brand items, or hard to find item. Maybe it's just my mode of thinking? confused

I had plum candy once that, depending on the piece you chose, tasted like fish, salt, green apple, or flowers. It was like russian rollete, eating that candy...
But, I've had success with other things. I actually ended up trying eel jerky, and it was really good! 3nodding

Hm, the candy's good, I honestly prefer the normal meals (excluding sushi and anything with seafood excluding salmon and tuna), but I can't stand Pocky and Ramune...ick.
Yeah, you all will say I'm crazy, but oh well. razz

I used to live in Hong Kong and there are a few huge Japanese department stores...the largest one called Sogo has 10 floors plus 3 basement levels...so I had tons of different kind of Japanese food and stationaries and so on...the reason i like them is not just they are often very special and unique - they are really cheap. I remember there's a japanese ice cream shop where they sold tofu ice cream and other weird flavours...my friend tried rice and curry..(you mix them and get curry rice) and he said it wasn't bad at all. yeah...the japanese like to make lots of flavours for the snacks and drinks...some mentioned corn flavoured candy...i tried that b4, pretty good...too many examples...here's two sites: http://inventorspot.com/articles/ten_bizarre_japanese_soft_drinks_5225http://bertc.com/japanese_ice_creams.htmanyways...my fav snack was a marshmallow of dimension about 12 x7 cm...with all those things that pop in your mouth inside the marshmallow..and of course, there's different flavours too xd

I haven't had much Japanese junk food, but I've had some, and I'd always loved it. The obivious, like pocky and rice candy, of course, and then there's delicious mochi. <3 I'm not sure if they're Japanese, but baked chesnuts (gomen, I can't spell =x=) are also really good~. I got them at a matsuri once. Um... There's those whistle candies, like the hard, Japanese version of life savers... And I once had this pancake with bean paste at a matsuri, that was s o g o o d.... Ah, now I'm hungry. xD'
So, yeah. I like Japanese junk food, 'different' taste or not. More than American. >w< I guess my taste buds are weird.

You know there's a even huge Japanese job fair there every year, right? Trust me you can find a lot of candies in your city. Try a local asian food store, or maybe do a search online.

Pocky is like crack <3 But I don't buy the crap american ones in the grocery stores anymore, unless I can't get to the asian market. Green tea and Banana chocolate pocky is love @_@ <3
Puccho is good too, and E-ma. Only way i heard it was through gackt's commercials xD <3
Mochi is always good @___@ and the puddings.
Ramune too <3
Even though it might not be considered Japanese, you cannot go wrong with bubble tea <3
China town is the best place to get those candies though @_@

littlewonder I think I heard of them once on japan-guide.com, a while back. There were two in Sunshine City that I recall reading about, within Tokyo. One was for ice-cream, and the other was for gyoza (some dumpling food). Ever heard of it? Or am I insane? I've been there. :3 I went to Namja Town and ate like, 15-20 gyouza. xD; Hahaha, I love gyouza~ heart When I study abroad in Japan next year I'm soooo going back, even if I have to go by myself. Anyway, I really really like dried squid, yum. whee Also senbei, Salad Pretz, daifuku, Calpis, Aquarius, C.C. Lemon, uhh... other stuff.

I've had some soda flavored gummy thing, some chocolate thing my friend loves (forgot the name sweatdrop ) and some green tea cookies (delicious, so buying them again if I have the chance), but some other things were...interesting to say the least.

I'll love to try some Japanese junk food. Well not just junk food, some real food would be even better. All I ever had that was Japanese was sushi and I hate seafood.

At a few FYE stores near me they have a whole Japan section, where you can get a ton of amazing Japanese food.
They have Kiwi, Strawberry, and Apple Gummi's Like 5 flavours of Pocky [to which I am really addicted] And these little koala snacks filled with chocolate and strawberry stuff...I dont remember what theyre called [help me out?] and I was re-reading Death Note the other day and L had some...It made me smile. And then theres the Ramune...which is exciting.
Its a happy place of joy and wonder ^__^
