Aerospark bowed his head a little bit as Pepper greeted him. The very same! He always liked talking to Pepper. She was always so happy to see him. It was almost like the two were family. They may as well have been. They had known each other for some time and it was easy for Aerospark to be friendly and playful with her. When Aerospark wondered what his pups might have been like had he had any, he always hoped that they'd be like Peppermint. Her history as a Beta in White Shadow made her a role model for the young wolves, certainly. While Alphas got their title from sheer size, Betas had to prove themselves as dependable and powerful wolves. That made Peppermint all the more special.
Oh, you had a race. That's nice. Bet you wiped the floor with that Firemoon, didn't you? Aero's eyes widened in mock horror when Peppermint mentioned being hated by the Alpha. How could anyone hate my little Peppers? he asked, shooting a discreet angry look toward the offending wolf. He found the alpha somewhere across the training field and he looked to be having a pleasant conversation with another wolf. I don't think he hates you. He probably just has a stick up his butt 'cause you were a Beta. He added reassuringly. He just feels threatened by you or he's jealous. He smiled. And that's just like my Peppers having the Alpha all jealous of her. He flicked his tail toward her affectionately.
"Oh, I'm pretty good, I guess..." He rubbed his neck looking for something interesting to talk about. "There's a ball coming up soon. You get a nice, pretty girl to go with you?" Unconsciously, Jack felt himself doubt that Dylan had a date. It wasn't that Dylan was a bad looking kid, just that he was so anti-social. The poor thing probably never even had a girlfriend. Come to think of it, that was a pretty stupid question to ask. Jack considered changing the subject, but it was too late for that. It wasn't like he could take back his question and ask something else.

Pepper couldn't help but happily nuzzle the older wolf. He was always so friendly, and layful towards her. Made it so much easier being around him. Then again, knowing him as long as she did, basically most of her life, it was hard not to be relaxed around him. To her, it didn't matter much that she had been a beta, he was still a wolf she looked up to. Then again, some of the best wolves never got a spot at the top. To her, title only mattered only a sliver of the overall reason for respecting one.
I wish I had. The anti-social boy has been keeping me from all the running I used to do, the candy wolf joked. Actually, I think I just need to regain my touch. Lost it before we were transferred over here, might be the reason actually. But still, I'm pretty sure I got the last laugh. An impressive finish is a great way to lose, she told her friend before he looked at the large wolf someways off. Why thank you. Makes me happy that I might be part of the reason he seemingly has a stick up his hind, Peppermint said pleasantly, though her eyes danced with laughter. Aero's words always made herself proud of what she had done, despite how others would put her down and insult her, sometimes behind her back, other times, straight to the female wolf's face.
So, you two been spending this winter productively at all? she asked, sure that there were some days the two were bound to sleep in. Then again, who could resist? She and Dylan certainly did some days. But then she was sure to make the orange haired human exercise for hours on end.
As if an answer was stuck in his throat, Dylan coughed lightly. "No, not really. Not like even want to go, but Pepper over there will probably drag me there if I said I wouldn't go, so, eh, maybe I'll get lucky and actually end up with a girl," the male chuckled. It had been a long time since the last time he was with a girl. If Jack could give off the feeling of awkwardness from talking about him having a date, then Peppermint was right, he needed to start getting out. "What about you? Gonna go yourself?" Now that would be an interesting sight to see. Dylan inwardly smirked.

Aerospark listened to Peppermint talk and nodded occasionally to show that he was listening and that he understood. Couldn't have said it better myself. If you ask me, winning gives the young ones a big head. Losing with a big finish just lets the enemy know that they won't be in the lead for long. He winked at her. If Pepper didn't have a rematch, then at least that Firemoon, whoever she was, would know who she was dealing with. Not that the two were enemies by any means, just that Pepper was the better wolf. Granted Aerospark was biased. Best not to get ahead of yourself, though. He's still the Alpha, after all. Just make him think that you're a good little Gamma and he should leave you alone.
At Pepper's next question, Aerospark's head lowered and he heaved a big, disappointed sigh. If only we were. All Jack over there's been doing is playing cards and drinking at the Hall. 'Course I'm one to talk. I haven't been real motivated to do any running or anything like that either. With that, Aero got an idea. Pepper was a young wolf. She'd just gotten done with a race, but the young ones were always so full of energy. What would you say to helping your old Aerospark get back into shape?
Jack looked away, as if there was something interesting elsewhere, though his mind was still on their conversation. "Well, that's a shame. If you don't find a date beforehand, then I'm sure you'll find someone at the ball. Heck, they got all of the people from White Shadow and the Academy supposed to be showin' up." Still looking away, Jack took a step closer to Dylan and gave him a pat on the back in a "there, there" sort of way. When he was asked if he was going, he stopped feeling sorry for Dylan. While Dylan was anti-social, that was completely by his own doing. Jack probably wouldn't have a date either. "Well, I figure I'll go just until all of the important stuff is over. I'll leave all of the dancing and all that to the young people."

Peppermint snorted slightly. Now when have I been one to so easily accept defeat? she asked the elder. That trait of her's was both a good thing, and a bad thing. For example, with the Alpha, she found it hard to restrain herself from wanting to challenge him, be that defiant little wolf she was. I know, but he's just so, ugh, the candy wolf whined. I don't like his way of 'keeping order'. Really. Not to mention as the runt I was growing up, I like o challenge. Bad habit in a way, I know.
Pepper looked up at Aerospark when he asked his question. What is this I hear? Dear old Aero asking for help to get back in shape? Why yes, yes I would like to help with such a task, she replied teasingly. But really, she would like to see the gray wolf back in shape.
Yes, it was true, there would always be someone to meet at the actual ball. He could also possibly meet up with his former Patron from back in the days. And of course there was always scary old Alister and his wifey, Calla. But heck, he was pretty, well close in someway, to the golden haired male. Of course it was, again, from back when he was younger. Many possibilities were flying through his head, then came the interruption of the awkward pat.
"What? You won't stay?" Dylan asked in joking shock. "But you should stay and mingle with some of the others." He was trying to refrain from saying "old" since that could also get him in trouble with his aunt. God knows how she found out these pettie things but she did, and the woman could really scare him.

Aerospark chuckled. Pepper had him there. If anything, she was persistent and that could mean the difference between being a former beta and the future alpha. That's what he thought anyway. Considering her size, there was little chance that she would become the dominant alpha, but she might catch the eye of the current dominant alpha. The thought made Aero laugh a little. She didn't like him. That much was obvious. With that mentality, even if LunarFlare showed interest in her, she'd end up refusing him making him angry at her. Pepper was better than that anyway. She just had to realize that duty was more important than her pride. Even if Pepper didn't like the alpha, she had to listen to him and do what he said for the good of the fort (and her own hide).
Like it or not, that's the Alpha. There's nothing we can do about it. I hate to say "know your place", but that's really what it comes down to. Aerospark didn't know LunarFlare himself, but Pepper's own dislike of him tempted Aero to dislike him as well. This bias wouldn't make any difference, though, and he certainly wasn't going to go out of his way to make trouble for the alpha. He tended to avoid contact with the wolves of higher rank if only to protect himself from doing or saying something stupid.
With Pepper's response, Aero grinned wolfishly. Don't make fun of me, now. I still have some fight left in me. How about a race around the track? Might not be a big challenge for you racing against an old codger like me, but go easy on me, will you? He pushed her shoulder playfully with one paw and moved at a leisurely pace toward the track.
Jack rolled his eyes at Dylan. Didn't take long for the boy to start making fun of him, did it? It had been asked jokingly, of course. Jack wasn't old enough that he wouldn't catch something like that. "No, I'll make an appearance if I have to, but you can't make me sit there bored all night with nothing to do." He shifted his weight from one leg to the other. Jack had only been standing there a few minutes, but he was already itching to get moving again. Rather than just stand there, Jack began walking again, expecting Dylan to follow.
"I don't suppose they'll let me go back home until the morning after, though..." Jack mused. The ball was going to take place in a public building in The City and it would be night before all of the announcements and things like that were out of the way. He might have to take roost in his old home for the night. His father had died in his fifties, but his old mother (probably in her sixties now) should still be there. He smiled, thinking of her home made corn bread. Maybe he would pay her a visit after he left the ball.

Pepper made a sound which was the equivalent to a wolf's sigh. Yes, she had long since realized that she really needed to learn to tone down her defiance streak. As much as I hate to admit it, I realize you are right. The Alpha is the top, and he has the final say, despite me not liking it. Besides, why would he care for a small, former beta's opinion, the female wolf muttered the last part, but still sure that the elder wolf would have been able to hear it.
Shaking her head, Peppermint bounded a little bit in her step. But anyways! she said in a chipper voice, a deep contrast to her vibe only seconds ago. A race sound good to me. Keeps your blood moving, she told Aerospark. I think that if I go too easy on you I'll basically be an adolescence getting their behind haded to them by their mentor, the white and red wolf said good humored. She knew Aero. He was older then most of the wolves at the fort, but he wasn't still alive for no good reason.
As was probably expected by the other male, Dylan followed him. "Well, no of course we can't. You're not exactly someone who would follow through with some order a younger rider gave to you," he said with an ever so subtle upward twitch at the corner of his lips.
The orange haired male cocked his head to the side. No, he supposed that they wouldn't be allowed to leave until morning. But really, he wondered. Would anyone really enforce that? It was a ball after all, so everyone was going to probably be enjoying them selves. "Well, you might as well go refresh your memory of the city if you don't want to stick around at the mall."
