I haven't been able to pick a side just yet...
I'll probably choose the 'good' side as always.
I think you formally join the sides by joining their respective guilds...

Oh and Wuyabi, the Cthulu stuff was really interesting and it just might have something to do with the event.

Well, I'll likely join whatever GiB decides we should. I say we join whatever, and then just report our findings of each side. It will help with research.

Aren't those guilds fan created? question

I'll try and do a little more Cthulhu Mythos research, in hopes of finding plot parallels.

The Cthulhu Mythos, possible plot parallels, and August Derleth:

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Derleth's take on the mythos drop the themes of human meaninglessness and moved the story more towards his views on Roman Catholic cosmology and moral principles. Instead of a universe of meaninglessness and chaos, Derleth's mythos is a struggle of good versus evil. Derleth once wrote:

As Lovecraft conceived the deities or forces of his mythos, there were, initially, the Elder Gods... [T]hese Elder Gods were benign deities, representing the forces of good, and existed peacefully at or near Betelgeuze in the constellation Orion, very rarely stirring forth to intervene in the unceasing struggle between the powers of evil and the races of Earth. These powers of evil were variously known as the Great Old Ones or the Ancient Ones...
—August Derleth, "The Cthulhu Mythos"

Wikipedia, Continued:

Quote:
Elemental theory

Derleth connected the deities of the Mythos to the four elements of air, earth, fire, and water, filling in gaps in the system by creating the beings Ithaqua, representing air, and Cthugha, representing fire.[20] As realized, the system has a few problems. For example, Derleth classified Cthulhu as a water elemental, which makes it odd that he could be trapped beneath the ocean and his psychic emanations blocked by water. Another problem arises in applying the elemental theory to beings that function on a cosmic scale, such as Yog-Sothoth—some authors have attempted to get around this by creating a separate category of aethyr elementals for Azathoth, Shub-Niggurath, Nyarlathotep, and Yog-Sothoth. Finally, Derleth matched the earth beings against the fire beings and the air beings against the water beings, which is inconsistent with the classical elements dichotomy in which air opposes earth and fire opposes water.[21]

The above oppostional system is interesting... perhaps our Overseer is a benevolent (?) version of Cthulhu, embodying aspects of both water and earth, while S.I.N. embodies fire and air.

EDIT: Wait just a minute! The overseer may in fact be an avatar of Nodens, one of the Elder Gods who opposes Cthulhu.

Excerpted from Wikipedia's article on Nodens (certain parts underlined and bolded by me for emphasis):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nodens_(Cthulhu_Mythos)

Quote:
Nodens is one of the Elder Gods and appears as an elderly, human male with white hair — gray-bearded and hoary yet still vital and strong. He often rides in a chariot formed from a huge seashell pulled by some great beasts of legend. Nodens is served by the Nightgaunts.

As a hunter, he will chase down evil creatures in the Dreamlands, such as the Shantaks. He prefers to hunt the servants of the Great Old Ones or Nyarlathotep because they are usually the most intelligent and offer the best sport, but not necessarily because he wants to help humans being attacked by them. He has, however, been known to deliberately help humans, such as when he offers advice to assist Randolph Carter against Nyarlathotep in The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath: "Out of the void S'ngac the violet gas had pointed the way, and archaic Nodens was bellowing his guidance from unhinted deeps," later followed by "And hoary Nodens raised a howl of triumph when Nyarlathotep, close on his quarry, stopped baffled by a glare that seared his formless hunting-horrors to grey dust."

Lovecraft may have based Nodens on Arthur Machen's The Great God Pan (1890) because Machen was one of Lovecraft's favorite authors.[1] In the novel, Machen describes a late Roman inscription hinting that Nodens is actually the titular god Pan.

On one side of the pillar was an inscription, of which I took a note. Some of the letters had been defaced, but I do not think there can be any doubt as to those which I supply. The inscription reads as follows:

DEVOMNODENTi
FLAvIVSSENILSPOSSVit
PROPTERNVPtias
quaSVIDITSVBVMBra
'To the great god Nodens (the god of the Great Deep or Abyss) Flavius Senilis has erected this pillar on account of the marriage which he saw beneath the shade.'
—Arthur Machen, The Great God Pan

One of Nodens's most prominent enemies was Nyarlahotep. Here's an excerpt from the story that bears his name, written by H.P. Lovecraft and obtained from this website: http://www.templeofdagon.com/lovecraft-archive/stories/nyarlathotep/ Warning: Lovecraft was racist, and keeps on emphasisizing Nyar's dark skin as if it were a bad thing.

Quote:
[Nyarlahotep] spoke much of the sciences of electricity and psychology and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. Men advised one another to see Nyarlathotep, and shuddered. And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished, for the small hours were rent with the screams of nightmare. Never before had the screams of nightmare been such a public problem; now the wise men almost wished they could forbid sleep in the small hours, that the shrieks of cities might less horribly disturb the pale, pitying moon as it glimmered on green waters gliding under bridges, and old steeples crumbling against a sickly sky.

I wonder if S.I.N's plan is to flood the world with Nightmares?

As a note, guys, none of the support guilds mentioned in the first post were made by NPCs. The guilds are entirely user-created, and have no real links to the NPCs other than simply being support for the chosen side.

Also, there is currently no official way to "join" a side. The NPCs are only raising awareness and increasing hype at this point for the event itself. If there comes to be a way to officially "join" a side/team for the event, I'll make note of it in the first post. However, until then, the best we can do is accept or decline friend requests with them.

So maybe there messages are just notifications, yet it isn't officially recruiting Gaians..

By next week maybe more clues would turn up about them..

Which user?
And looking in there profiles it IS and good versus evil thing.
And I saw at this post at the forum that there are some item leaks..
Edit: Lanzer said that we will be getting more demonic and angelic items.. So maybe that has a relation with NPC S.I.N and B.O.O.
