I tend to agree with mary, since the barrier isn't like a gate between worlds that's sealed off in Japan--it's an interdimensional thing, so there isn't any one place in the world where you can access the demon world unless you have a portal there (such as Koenma sets up for Yusuke sometimes.)

I also like to think that there are detectives in other parts of the world, though there's nothing mentioned along that line in the series.

See, I'd think that there would be Spirit Detectives world-wide as well, but Koenma specifically said that there were only two Spirit Detectives before Yusuke, Sensui and the lady who I forgot her name.

I mean, its quite obvious that there are others who are gifted in the super-natural areas who do their own demon fighting and home protecting. I mean, look at Genkai and Toguro. Two very talented fighters, but neither employed by Spirit World. The thin barrier idea is something I hadn't considered, and I'm starting to lean towards that idea too.

Diverting slightly off-topic, I'm beginning to wonder something. Given that "Spirit World" where Koenma resides is actually many many series of worlds, and that Koenma tends to focus on matters in Japan (at least from what I've seen of the anime,) and also considering that even "Spirit World" has limits, I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps in fact the "Spirit World" giant palace is divided is only one world that focuses on Japan and only has a certain amount of knowledge about certain things and is limited by their needs and that there are actually other worlds and other palaces that don't know of the existence of their siblings and take care of the other global matters. Perhaps there are other "Enmas" and other "Koenmas" that we don't even KNOW about, and perhaps Koenma and Enma don't even know about. No one knows about them, as it did say in the manga that Enma is not a true god but just stole to power.

If Enma can do it and reach Spirit World, what would stop others from doing so? It did say that even Enma and all is armies couldn't defeat the S-class demons, and by the end of the series, Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei had all climbed to around that rank, and even Sensui had. Sensui could've very well become an Enma if he had wanted to. (However we find out that deep down his longing was to die in Demon World.)

(sigh) I know Koenma says there have only been two before Yuusuke, but . . . that doesn't make any bloody sense to me. The barrier has been closed for centuries, and demons have doubtlessly been causing problems for pretty much that whole time, so why have there been no spirit detectives until just the last few decades? They go to great pains to note that the SDF is way, waaaaaay too conspicuous to do Yuusuke's job, so who did it for the last thousand or so years before Kuroko?

(Something tells me I spelled her name wrong, but I'm too tired to look it up right now.)

Eh, I tried to look up her name...but I got lazy too. Lol ^^;

Well, my guess on the matter if we're sticking with canon is that Enma just didn't give a crap and let the humans fend for themselves. It was probably only when Koenma took over, probably soft in his early years that he said "Hey! We need to take care of this!"

If we're NOT sticking with canon, then if we assume that my whole idea of other worlds within Spirit World are taking care of business in other parts of the Living (or Human) World, then we can guess that the places where the energy barrier things changes location over time, thus allowing different places to become more flooded with demons during certain times. Look at the Dark Ages (aka Medieval Times) in Europe, VERY far from Japan and apparently when demons ran around freely.

I dunno. I just think it's awfully, cosmically coincidental that if Enma just left the humans to fend for themselves, no actual, genuine threats to the world ever popped up until after there were spirit detectives. (shrug)

I like your theory about the thinner spot shifting position over time. That's . . . nifty.

Well, we never really got too much "OMG THIS IS ENMA LOOK AT HIM!!!" character development with Enma, something I really didn't like just because of how often he'd been mentioned. I was waiting for him to play some sort of major role in the series after he returned, but he just locked himself up again, or went on vacation, or whatever. I guess my point is is that we really don't know if he would just leave the humans to fend for themselves or if he would take some responsibility and take care of them.

Hahaha! I'm very glad you like my idea! : D

I like the idea too X3.

Yeah King Enma didn't seem to give a crap until the world was about to end XDDD

And the only reason that much trouble popped up when Spirit Detectives did is because Senui was one XDDDD

I don't know, I think it'd be kinda of interesting to see an Enma-based fan fic, even if it was just a one chapter blurb/quick write. Just like make some sort of explanation to how he came to power and what he was like and stuff. : )

And the topic of wanting more fics to cover various things has come up again.

Koenma's mother! come on- did he just pop out of his dad's head like Athena did? I doubt it.

I could see Enma raping someone. (shrugs)

My fanfic totally mentions Koenma's mother later on

I've always figured that's a fun area to play with. Although we don't know how gods actually reproduce, the default assumption IS that he's got a mom somewhere, or at least he did at one point, so we can feel free as fans to speculate/create/make s**t up as we will.

I . . . can't actually see Enma raping anyone, really. He's a b*****d, yes, but he just doesn't read to me like that flavor of b*****d.

Eh, maybe. I don't know. Enma just doesn't really seem to care for anyone. Maybe he DIDN'T rape someone, but I highly doubt that he decided "I'm gonna be a papa and this will be the mama." If anything, I could see it being "Wow...your pregnant...crap."

Maybe he really loved Koenma's mother and that's why he's so aloof and doesn't show that much concern over his son..

*highly doubts this* He may have loved her, but he puts his 'position' over his son and doesn't do anything out of sorrow or loss..

Who knows? maybe his mother died because of Enma's attitude.

I think it'd be a interesting but actually highly believable if Enma went into aloofness over the death (or perhaps leaving) of Koenma's mother. Maybe his heart's broken and hasn't recovered over all these years...

That is an interesting take. I think, though, that Enma is the way he is in part because he's been in his position for so long. It's not only demons who grow hard-hearted after so many centuries, and he's got a lot of very difficult responsibilities. The way he is with Koenma always read to me as him being deliberately distant so that his son could learn the hard way how to rule -- tough love, as it were, because experience, though often a hard teacher, is also the best one.
