The bunnies came today! We're all so excited, but we have to remind ourselves to take it easy and let them de-stress for a bit. They've never been outside the one part of the previous barn, so a new home is quite a shift for them.

Fawn is apparently the more stressed of the two. I can see that - she's pretty socially dependent and likes to flatten herself against anything that makes her feel secure (someone holding her, the cage floor, etc.). She wedges herself between Marple and the cage wall whenever she can. Marple seems to be taking things pretty well. She likes to stay in the back corner for now, too, but she didn't get as stressed out. My mom put a cotton table cloth over the top and most of the side of the cage so they have privacy for the day. We'll start slowly peeling that back at some point but it'll be a gradual process. The pellets have already been eaten quite a bit, and I managed to get a peek at both of them nibbling the Timothy hay, so I know they're eating. We heard one of them drinking from the bottle, too, while we were standing there - not sure which one, since the table cloth blocked our view.

My brother's cat doesn't seem to care, but my cat is ticked off. He keeps as wide a distance from the cage as possible when walking by, and my brother said he even hissed a little at the rabbits when they first got there. xd Grouchy old man.

How long do rabbits usually live?

My bunny, Dottie, is 8 years old, almost 9 (next March). She's showing signs of age, but seems healthy. She had a bit of slight weakness in her hind legs, but they're back to normal now.

Average lifespan is 7 years. For larger breeds it can shorten, for smaller lengthen slightly.

I have some crummy pictures of the rabbits and their cage. =P The rabbit one stinks, because I'm not using the flash around them when they're so new, and the lighting wasn't great.

And here's their cage! It's handmade by the kid who cares for the rabbits related to ours (he made basically all of the cages they use, too). It doesn't looks as big in photos as it does in person....

Of course, they're going to need separate ones when they get bigger, but it's a nice size for them now, even bigger than I thought.

Cute little bunny, Paranormal! Actually, Fawn has a brother who looks even more like yours.

Update on personalities...

What a flip! So much for Fawn being more dependent. If she's stressed, she likes to bury herself in a person's arms or behind her sister, but she' actually now the more independent and investigative of the two. She wants nothing to do with being held unless something's upset her, and then only long enough for her to feel secure again - after that, "Let me back on the floor!" She seems to have larger back legs than Marple and likes to stomp them in protest or to make a point about something, and she spends all of her time out of the cage roaming around the kitchen for anything interesting. If, heaven forbid, she gets picked up, she typically finds a "hidden" spot once she's down and makes sure to groom all the gross people cooties off of herself.

Miss Marple is just the opposite. She's ready to get herself back into the cage as soon as she's not being held anymore. Yesterday, my brother had been holding her and put her down. She roamed over to me and pushed against my legs until I brought her up on my lap and pet her. =D It had to be one of the cutest things I'd ever seen.

New photos! Fawn's was taken last night, and Marple's about 20 minutes ago.

Aww! They're adorable! My little Bandit is also pretty independent. He doesn't really like being held and picked up very much, he'd rather explore and mark stuff. He's not neutered yet, he will be sometime this late December or January. Until then we only let him play in the bathroom because it's easy to clean up. He only seems to want to wander around and do his binkies and dance while I'm around though. I don't know if he's insecure when no one is around, or he's just a show off.

Poor little bunny, the people we got him from didn't want him because of allergies, they only had him about a month. Luckily we've discovered he travels well, it was a 20 minute drive back to our house, and I have to bring him with me when I go see my parents on the holidays, which it about an hour long car ride.

Bandit likes to sleep in his litterbox, he doesn't know any better yet. This picture was taken right after we brought him home. I'm planning on upgrading his cage for Christmas to a really big one. This was the cage his previous owners had him in, I think it's technically big enough for him, but I'm sure it's still a bit cramped.

Bandit looks a bit like Marple, too. =D

My mom has noticed a pattern with my "firstborn" animals, as she calls them: the oldest of their species that are my pets. They all seem to be very independent and demanding. My cat (even though he loooves me cuddling him, he's not fond of anyone else picking him up), my oldest Betta fish (she has such an attitude and tough build that I thought for a while that she was a male), and now Fawn. =D I don't mind. Watching her roam around is neat. I love when she does that rabbit thing where they stand on their hind legs to look around. She does it a lot when she's exploring.

Well, Firstborns SHOULD be. Birth Order-wise.

But then, *I* am a "firstborn" too. rofl

So am I. So's my cousin, though, but he's fairly unmotivated. They seem to be very extremely one way or another. o.0 My pets just catch the super-independent.

I had to hold Fawn today, because my mom was vacuuming the floor around their cage and obviously didn't want them there for that. Fawn didn't like the vacuum noise. She snuggled her head in the crook of my arm the whole time. =D

We were in another room, but she could hear it - that was bad enough for her.

Of course, once the noise was over, and she was back in the kitchen, she was ready to get down again after about 10 seconds. =D

Marple's actually started coming out of the cage on her own now, though she only hops out, sniffs around for a few seconds, and jumps back in. We've given them a second food bowl after noticing that they were dragging their original one around so they could hog it (Marple tries to pull it close to her, Fawn tries to pull it away, and they just end up spilling it and shoving the bowl around as a play toy). I also got them a couple toys - one's a baseball-shaped one made out of some sort of loofa/dried vegetable type material, and the other is a plastic rattle for rabbits. =P Haven't put the rattle in, yet, but I think mine will like it. I think she likes doing things that make noise...
