"Eh, Charlene likes it pretty well. She's not particularly emotional about things but she isn't grumbling or ranting about it or staring at it regretfully in a mirror so she likes it." the man answered, shrugging his shoulders. "Bailey seems to think its cool and can't wait to see mine. Kahlua doesn't understand the point of tattoos."

"A lotta people don't," Odin nodded, "Gonna give you a little line, lethcha see how it feels." And so he did just that. Like a cat scratch on sunburn, not too bad.

Charlie had zoned out in the few moments he was doing the line. His face was straight, seemingly expressionless and he was mostly ignoring the pain. His first tattoo had hurt much worse than this - particularly since he'd had it done in the dark in a cell when he was twelve. A cat scratch on sunburn he could take.
Part of the man vaguely wondered why getting a small line first to let him 'see how it feels' was necessary. He knew what it felt like. If he had objections to the pain, he wouldn't have wanted to get another tat - particularly a detailed one. But, to each his own. He wasn't going to rag on the artist's methods. He probably had his reasons.

It was just an old trade trick to stop people from freaking out when you really began. Odin smiled and continued then. Sure, he'd figured Charlie wouldn't mind, but it was still always best to check.
"So. You got a girl waitin' fer ya at home?"

Charlie's left eyebrow quirked upward and his eyes slowly moved towards his right to fix on the tattooist. "No." was his reply, tone cool, though not particularly mean spirited. Just a rather firm negation of the question.

Odin nodded, not looking up. He was very intent on his work and just making small talk.
"Ah. I see." Poor guy. "Who was that little kid I saw you with last week? Dartsmoore's kid?"

Odin chuckled.
"Niiiice name." A pause.
"So. You mentioned another dimension. What's it like where you come from?"

"Unpleasant. War torn in some places. It was improving, in some areas, prior to its destruction." he commented drly, eyes distant for a moment or two.

"Huh! Sounds a lot like my hometown." Homeland, more like, but that was close enough for him. "I understand why you'd want to haul a** outta there."
"So, if there's no girl at home, you dating...anyone?"

"No. No one at all." the answer was calm, as if he was quite used to giving it but then suddenly he added something else. "Well, there was one guy who seemed like we might but that didn't work out."
Ah, Charlie's lovelife. Talk about a topic lacking much information. The guy had been one of the few of his kind who had made a point not to get involved with anyone and to not let his sexual desires cloud his judgment during the wars - and after. He still had a few trust issues, and issues getting past not thinking sexually.

"That sucks," Odin said with a little wag of the head, "but when you find the right person, you'll just...know." A pause. Wait. He'd definitely said 'guy'. Aha! so he'd been right!
"I've only dated 1 person before, and he was really 'bamf'. Big dude, quite a bit older and wiser, but that ended kind violently, and I haven't been able to make myself date since."

"Mind if I ask what sort of end that might have been?" Charlie asked in whatever was closest to his version of tentative. Unlike Dartie, who'd just ask and say 'well ******** it, don't bring it up if you don't want me to wonder.' if she upset someone, her alternate actually did want to make an effort to get along with people - he just wasn't completely adept at the art yet.

"Well, back where I come from, being gay is worse than being a serial-killing rapist," he paused to re-ink the tip, "My mother caught us in bed...and I literally just mean in bed. Sleeping, yenno? So she turns us in and they decide that he's in the wrong because he's older. It was a public execution." And he gave a little shudder. It was a long time ago, and he could still speak of it without terrible pain, but as soon as the images came back, it started to wrench him apart. Luckily, he was able to fight them away this time.

Charlie vaguely wondered if he should say something comforting, but having such little experience with these matters had very little he could say.
"I'm sorry for your loss." he stated quietly before trying to at least find a bright point he could bring up - that was Bailey's usual suggestion in situations like these. "At least you didn't get imprisoned for being male where you came from?"
