Kay smiled and went for said syrup, searching for plates and utensils.
"He's a very sweet boy." Hey, it was a conversation starter, right?

"Aye, he is," Evan said with a sigh as he flipped the pancake, a little messily. "He's a little hard to handle, though. I think he must still be upset over having to come and live with me..." He frowned softly, tugging at his sandy hair.

"I don't think it's so much living with you as it is losing his mother," Kay said, "It's difficult to deal with the loss of the people who raised you." Aha! Success! He'd found the plates. Now to find the silverware...
"I'm sure he'll get used to it. He seems very...accepting of change."

"I guess you're right... but still, it's the same effect." Evan grinned ruefully. "You probably got to know him better than I have yet... he won't really talk to me much, you know? I'm bad at being a father." He snorted, ruefully. "Why am I spilling my heart to a stranger? I'm sorry."

"I like it," Kay said, having found the utensils and beginning to gather them, "The world has a sad lack of honestly nowadays. And don't worry. The boy will warm up to you, and of course with the tutoring, I can give you the inside word." And thus he went to set the table.

"Yeah, that's true." Evan brightened, shrugging and tilting his head as he watched the teacher settle in as if he owned the place. "Thanks so much. I appreciate your offer to teach him. It's partly my fault he's been cooped up here for a few days... I'm kinda scared to deal with the faculty, you know?"

"Honestly? So am I," Kay said, giving a little smile and a chuckle, "I've met a few and, in fact, taught one's child. I'm always here, though, if you have any questions...or need a biology teacher." He shuffled back into the kitchen, hands clasped behind his back, and stood a good few feet away from Evan. it wouldn't do to make him uncomfortable!
"Is there anything else you would like me to do?"

"Thank you, I appreciate it a lot," Evan said, sitting down heavily in a chair after pouring another pancake, plastering butter all over the finished ones. "I'm no good at biology or talking to people, really. Nose in a book, or writing one, and all that." He laughed, awkwardly.

"You're an author?" Kay asked. Published or not, an author was an author, and he was intrigued.

"Yeah, I am. I write mystery novels," Evan explained, flipping the pancake messily, ending up with pancake batter on one hand and licking it off with a smile. "Never done a book tour or anything, but they're on shelves..."

"That's good," Kay said, moving a bit closer and leaning on a bit of nearby counter, "If you have the time, I'd like to know some of the titles. I've never known an author of anything but textbooks."

"Oh... uh, Sinner? And Psyche..." Evan trailed off, looking at the other thoughtfully, with slight appraisal in his clear brown eyes. "I've got nothing -but- time."

Kay nodded. They were easy titles to remember; striking and horrifying. He wasn't sure if he'd like them or not (he was quite picky with his literature), but reading something that had flowed from the mind of someone you knew was...intriguing. Hrm. He'd used that word a lot today...

"Is dinner ready?" interrupted Laial after a few moments of companionable silence, popping up with tentacles still dripping melon-scented hand-soap.
"Almost, kiddo, almost," Evan said with a laugh, pushing his hair back as he slid another pancake on the alarmingly-high stack. "Lemme just make a couple more..."

Kay was again going to offer to take over, but he knew a guest's place. You mulled about, acted friendly, and did only what was asked of you. Because of this shimmering bit of poise, he went to see Laial.
"We're still on for the classes."
