SteelyIII Proudly_Jewish Othala I remember seeing this show, I believe it was called 'More Than Human' or 'Superhuman' and they got this guy who had some sort of disorder than ended up being a blessing for him and he learned Icelandic in 5 days then went on National TV in Iceland and did an interview in perfect Icelandic. eek Actually, I've heard of some guy that could appearantly learn a language in a day... eek Tell me more about this 'guy'... He had grown up like a 'normal' kid, but had been able to hide that he was like the kid in that Bruce Willis movie with numbers. He acted normal and all, but still had that thing with numbers. He loved the number Pi as it was perfect, and tey tried testing him, by suddenly changing one of the numbers behind the comma in Pi. His mood changed when he saw the wrong number.
Also, they used him scientificly. Or... used might be a wrong word, as he did it willingly. Anyway, he was able to explain to them what he saw when he saw these numbers etc, so they could get a better insight in what goes on in one of these people's brain.
One of the challenges he was given later, as he had shown incredible learning abilities, was to learn to speak one of the languages most different from his native american. This is where the icelandic comes in. Iceland is one of the languages farthest from English. He had a week, I think it was, but he still hadn't learned it. When he had one day left, no one thought he'd make it. He was supposed to be in a live TV interview on Icelandic TV. I dont remember which channel, though.
Anyway, it seems totally hopeless for him to learn this language, but the last day, he studies hard, and when the interview is over, everybody is completely astonished as to how well he speaks and understands it. He is fluent, except for a few words he pronounce wrong.

I'm seriously thinking of going to Iceland for a year. It's comforting hearing how it's a well-off country where I can speak English when I get confused and people will understand me.

I'm going to Iceland the 4th of February for about a year. I'm going to work there as an aupair with a danish family, but I will be learning Icelandic as well, and hopefully a friend of mine will help me keep it alive. He is Icelandic himself, so there should be a good chance of it...

A forum on Gaia on Icelandic and no Icelanders? surprised Unless I'm misunderstanding something.. I'm Icelandic and was wondering about a few things I've read hear. Like what do you mean by high literacy rate? And about the translations, we've got lots of books translated. There was someone that said that pretty much only Harry Potter got translated into Icelandic, which is way off. Of course it's mostly "children's" books but lots of "grown-up's" literature as well. Maybe not as much though as in many other countries since quite alot of Icelanders can at least speak Danish, if not English as well fairly well.
While I am extremely proud of my country and the language I still boggle over why foreigners would like to come here, especially young people. I mean, what the hell? Why Iceland, of all the countries in the world? What makes you attracted to this god-damned island that has been called the 51st state of America, where it's pretty much always cold, it's almost as expensive as Japan and, well, you're isolated from the rest of the world! (Yes I do love my country. It is beautiful but I always think that's just because I grew up here..)
And uh, this guy you are talking about that learned Icelandic in a day. I haven't heard of him but HellsBitch says that Icelandic is one of the languages farthest from English? I dunno, wouldn't that rather be some Asian language that has pretty much no links at all except for some new words? Just wondering, it doesn't seem very logical to me, but then again, maybe it is.. confused
Anyway. Hversu margir hérna tala svo íslensku? Hef aldrei séð íslending á Gaia dramallama

Anyway. Hversu margir hérna tala svo íslensku? Hef aldrei séð íslending á Gaia dramallama Ég tala ekki íslensku, en ég er að læra... it. xD I met an Icelander a year ago, so you're not the only one. razz And about Icelandic being the language farthest away from English, I think she meant among the Germanic languages. I+d love to go to Iceland some day, though it is really expensive. My brother was there a couple of months ago at the IcelandAir Glíma competition. He won a price for being the "besti erlandi glímumaðurinn". biggrin

I've been thinking about it for a little while now making some sort of a coursebook in Icelandic for foreigners, I've been teaching a friend of mine from Wales that just moved here some and since I'd like to be a teacher and am a language fanatic, I think it'd be really interesting whee
So yeah, if any of you do have any questions about Icelandic or Iceland in general, I really really would be happy to answer as well as I can blaugh

I know some people who have gone to Iceland just to get really drunk at a bunch of bars. I don't get that, because we have bars here, and you don't have to buy an airplane ticket to get to them. I also don't get why Icelanders come here (Minnesota). If I lived in Iceland, and I wanted to go to the US, I'd pick somewhere warmer. I used to work in a store that had A LOT of Icelanders come in and buy things. I once asked one of them why so many of them came, and he answered, "we have direct flights from Reykjavik" as if that made the obvious connection. I still don't get it. We have direct flights to a lot of places I never go to.
