I am completely STUNNED that not a single person mentioned Tony Iommi. In my opinion, he is the greatest guitarist that ever lived.

The poll for this thread is bullshit, it's too biased. I'd say Jimmy Page though.

Gazlowe My vote goes to Michael Angelo Batio. Praise to Him With Strings...
Dude, he's not that great, lots of flash. He's good no doubt but yeah, plus he's an a** in person(has met).
You also need more poll options because you missed: Eddie Van Halen, Peter Towneshend, David Gilmour, Brain May, Jimmy Page(hello!), Slash, Gary Rossington, Tony Iommi, Rhandy Rhoads, George Harrison , and John Frusciante, Jeff Beck. [This is the short list by the way]
Jimmy Page, Slash, Iommi, Rhandy, Jeff Beck, and Eddie are the best.
Hendrix is good but way too over rated skill-wise. Creatively he's a genius though.
...oh, by the way I'm Awesome!

Slash really isn't that great of a guitarist, he's WAY over-rated since Gaytard Hero came out. He wrote good riffs and all, but lacked skill.

Are you serious? I mean yes Guitar Hero upped his notoriety but he's pretty damn good technically. You really have to examine his whole career to see his real style. GNR isn't his best stuff really. The man can play anything. I've never seen some one able to blend so easily with every kind of music. He's on a ton of CD for other people that most people have no clue about.

...oh, by the way I'm Awesome! I agree, despite his recent popularity, Slash is still a hell of a guitar player, He plays with raw emotion that alot of tech freaks just can pull off. Also, nobody talk s**t about angus young, Hes not the best by any means, but listen to the nightprowler solo, it is SO sick. Just because he uses blues scales dosnt mean he isnt good. Sometimes keeping it simple is the way to go.

honestly its impossible to decide who the best guitarist in the world is because of the massive differences in there styles, example: u can't compare Satriani with Malmsteen in terms of skill because they are to different in there technique.

Who's to say that the one with most skill is the best guitarist. Couldn't the best guitarist be one who has made a lasting impression? Robert Johnson for example: He basically invented the guitar solo. He brought the delta blues to popularity and influenced guys from Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, to Jimmy Page. F-ing Jimmy Page, one of the godfathers of the hard rock, early metal scene, was inspired by Robert Johnson.
You could also pick some one like les Paul. Besides the fact that he is a phenomenal guitar player, he has a signature guitar model unlike any other. You cannot think of Gibson guitars with out a Les Paul being the first guitar you think of. Not to mention that almost anybody and everybody in any genre of music plays a Les Paul. That guitar is hear to stay till the end of time, and the name of that guitar is LES PAUL!!!
