The academy student quickly switched from one position to the next. This time Shisei’s body converted into a sitting position with both legs together stretched as straight as they could. The toes on each foot curled back pointing the scaled child. His spine then lurched forward with both arms stretched trying to grasp his toes. Both middle fingers managed to just touch the big toes. It was a simple stretch that pulled on the muscles of the boy’s calves and thighs. He could also feel a little twitch in his back, but that may have been from the earlier exercises. As he position held the snake youth counted the seconds in his head.

“Seven… eight… nine…” the boy allowed the numbers to slowly drift in his head to take the burning feeling at the back of his legs away. The thought of the time circling around his head made the child remember some his favorite numbers. One was the number one for obvious reasons. One was supposed to be the best. The single, solitary number. Despite this isolated existence, the number still lay atop of all the others except one other.

“Thirteen… fourteen…” the child analysis continued his mental counting. One was a great number, but there was only one better than it. That was zero. That lone number represented everything and nothing. Infinity and eternity. Boundless possibility that not even the number ‘one’ could surpass. The first number usually meant the best, but the number before it was greater. It was funny how the vastest of all the numbers was usually considered the mark of a loser. In the end it is just misunderstood. One couldn’t tell the real possibilities of it until using it. A twinge in his left thigh stopped the weird fascination of numbers and brought the serpent back to his training. If only his body was boundless with tenacity. His will might just be. Shisei continued to keep his position making sure that his middle fingers did not slip away from his big toes. The mind continued to count the numbers, hoping he could reach a time that would leave him content. “Eighteen… Nineteen…”

As seconds increased time, decreased in the continuation of the exercise. The academy boy persevered in his hold. “Twenty five… twenty six..” his mind heaved as the violet snake hair drooped across his forehead covering the tops of his eyes. His eyes stayed focused on the finger ligaments against his big toes. Shisei forced his skeleton to keep that pose as if he were a model for a sculpture or art painting. The fictional masterpiece would not be done until the boy was satisfied with the amount of time he held.

At the same time the little cricket lingered around Shisei’s body. It was curious to see the boy’s next pose, but watching a figurine was not in its agendas. Seeing no action from the pale child, the insect decided to try and call for someone else of his species that may have been better company. Its little wings raised and rubbed together making a high chirping noise. Hopefully some other cricket (preferably a female) would come out and play.

The snake child heard the noise and allowed one amber orb to slowly glide across to view the tiny bug. The insect music was not bothersome, but Shisei liked the forest for its silence. The little solo was disrupting that hush. The distraction was not enough to make the boy lose his position. He just kept counting the numbers in his head. “Twenty seven… twenty eight…”

“Twenty nine… thirty…”. The snake child decided to stop at half a minute. He was pleased with that time. As Shisei allowed his nose and eyes to settle at the grass between his legs. The chirping bug continued the melody. Little snake could not understand how the chirping could be a language for the insect. It did not make much sense to Shisei. It was just a noise that became bothersome after a while.

The sound did have the effect the bug was looking for. Soon another joined it. The new insect hopped between Shisei’s legs before using its wings to float upon his nose. It rubbed its feet twice and then hopped on top of the boy’s dread before making gliding down to its insect friend. The two then began to create more of the chirping sound. Shisei was considering if it was worth the energy to squash both six legged creatures. His body fell back to the floor and his eyes watched at the two insects as they began their musical game.

While watching the two create music Shisei laid his arms flat on either side of him. Yellow pupils continued to stare at the bugs, but his lower body raised. The left leg stretched its maximum length and pointed to the right while the right stretched and pointed to the left. This motion provided a new feeling in his legs and lower back. The seconds counted with each chirp of the insects.

The boy kept his legs in the position for half a minute, before releasing the hold. It was harder than he expected to hold the awkward stretch. It hurt more than expected too. Shisei would recover though, while the two insects continued their tune. The serpent child returned to his feet. Standing up straight the boy stretched his neck quickly before doing his final stretch. It was the one that he did mostly to keep his flexibility in his legs. His frame lurched forward resting both hands on the ground. Then both legs began to split wider and wider apart. They inched slowly at first, but quickly divided until Shisei was sitting in a split position. Once in position his mind began to count the number of chirps from the crickets. They both would make a sound about every second. It was easier with the bugs keeping count. They were useful for something. “One… two…” His mind keeping the seconds in order. Air slowly entered and retreated from the child as time continued to flow forward. The crickets still hopped around and made their music, until the seconds finally added up to a minute. At the time Shisei released the hold, pleased by his progress. The first part was over and now he could move on to his other intentions in the forest today.

The serpent youth returned to his feet, but in a crouching position. The next part of this morning exercise would be a little more interesting. Shisei did like to start his day with a little run. This time it would be a sprint. With a forest full of thin wooden bamboo that grew out of the ground everywhere to get a good speed would be highly unlikely. Yet that was the interesting part in this work out. Just how much acceleration could Shisei create and continue to hold without any of the hard poles stopping his progress. To bang into one of them would be not only an eye popping and body waking experience. It could also be an unwanted sleep inducing reagent for the rest of the day. Sometimes you have to risk the day. The closer the serpent youth could avoid being hit; the easier it would be against his future adversary. The realistic mind began to imagine that little imp as one of the wooden beams before him. His brain continued to flesh out the image as the small body took the position of a sprinter, right before that start of a hundred meter dash. The lime hair apparition was taunting, waving Shisei on. “Come on Bakemono-suke! I wanna give you brain damage this time!”. Shisei bolted at the bamboo tree.

Both eyes kept a glare at the oncoming obstruction. His acceleration picked up slightly as the first obstruction was not too far off. A head on collision would still be unfavorable. The serpent kid would not diverge from his path till the last instant. “Pivot. Then rotate. That way I can keep going.” Shisei’s mind told him as the figment continued to wave him on. Feet plodded in the dirt until only inches away from the bamboo. In Shisei’s mind the Tanu figment lunged a fist at him. The boy pivoted his back leg that mad his whole body rotate. He dodged the first bamboo by a few inches. His eyes seeing the fantasy fist miss his face.

Feeling a bit proud the snake youth let his guard lower and lost concentration. He also did let his eye loom behind the first bamboo stalk or he would have known there was an obtrusion out of the side of the stalk. The stalk was about the boy’s height. As the white youth spun, his throat was instantly caught by the branching piece. The hit knocked him in a twirling position and he fell forwards behind the bamboo stalk. His mind could already picture what that midget goblin would say to him. “Ha! Idiot! I have two arms to slap you around with.”. This exercise may get vexing quickly if Shisei’s imagination kept the tomboy at such a rude level.

“Gahh!” the boy screeched, holding his throat and chin. His body slowly rolled in the grass as he tried to regain his composure. That clothesline smacked all the oxygen out of Shisei’s wind pipe. It was unexpected too, which meant there was no chance in preparation for such a blow. The serpent youth was only happy that no one was around to see such a humiliating start. He could already imagine just how that Tanu would react if he was really here. The buffoon would probably hold it over his head for the rest of his life. That’s just if Tanu already didn’t hold their first battle like a golden trophy in front of Shisei’s face. Fortunately it was just the snake student in the forest. No one else. No other sounds besides his gasping for air and the cricket tune, which made a different melody this time. Almost as if anticipating Shisei’s exhilaration their chirping took on a faster, yet still awkward pace. Violet dreads swayed left and right as the young Orochi made it back to his knees.

Gold eyes stared up into the morning sky. It was slowly getting brighter. Soon enough class would start. The yard stick, little leo, sparkle eyes and the rest would be there soon enough. Perhaps even that hopping girl. What was her name? Orika was it? She had disappeared since the morning of yesterday when the classes were split apart. Another thought occurred to Shisei. Maybe the class would be split again? As long as his side did something fruitful. Nothing like make up or dressing. After a couple of minutes the maverick returned to his feet. The cold air finally returned to his repertory system and created the same willful energy as before. He returned to his position before the same bamboo stalk. His mind made a check to remember of the underlying branch at the side of the tree. The faint image of Tanu returned to his mind. The small sprite was using his fingers to pull down the skin below the eye while sticking his tongue at Shisei. It was going to be a long day.

The serpent youth dragged his toes, till his feet began to pick up speed again. The apparition did not speak any words this time, but only jeered and waving Shisei onwards. The yellow suns in the child’s head stared ahead and tried to assess all that went wrong before. One leg slid in front and twisted on the ankle. This carried the rest of the form in another twirl. This time Shisei lowered his upper half so that it would drift under the low hanging branch. It worked. Shisei was out of harms way this time from one bamboo tree. This was not a perfect spin though. The rotation had too much momentum and the small form could not regain control. Instead his feet skipped twice along the ground before the rest of his skeleton came down. Both arms managed to shoot ahead to catch the child snake’s body from a hard landing. The pale form took a seat on the ground while checking his feet.

The snake genius was not feeling very smart at the moment. To think that he lost control so easily. Fingers rubbed the right ankle of the boy as his mind began contemplating some other tactic. Maybe pivoting on the other foot or move the rotating foot to the back just before. There also was the option of just moving to side. That way he could at least keep his eyes in front for any low incoming branches. After a minute Shisei returned to his feet. He decided not to use the same bamboo stalk and move on further into the forest. The first wooden pole seemed to truly have Tanu’s spirit within it and want to create a concussion in his developing brain. Instead his eyes set on to a more dense part of the forest. There were pieces of bamboo and vines rummaging all around. There would not be any time for spinning there. Just burst of speed with some hopeful success. It would be a challenge to go through, but that is what the serpent youth liked. As long as he knew winning was the outcome. Shisei’s body took the form of a track star and within seconds he sprinted forward leaving a small wake of dust and two crickets behind.

Speed. Coordination. These were the essentials that Shisei needed to succeed at this exercise. Accelerating faster and faster as his lithe body approached the thicker parts of the bamboo forest. Sharp shards of bark and sharp protrusions poked out of the most awkward places making it hard to even walk through. The serpent youth would try to run through this and not break an ankle. It might awe inspiring if he could do it. His golden spheres loomed ahead imagining the enemy that motivated his rapid training. This time he could only see the back of sakura colored youth. The phantom was ahead of his body also running. That was the game this time. Catch up to that form and not break any bones in the process. Shisei hurried faster and faster. Feet beating off the ground like a horse. Finally his form made it to the first obstruction. Three poles that were edged close together so that a person could not easily walk through. One would have to slow down and creep through, but where was the fun in that. At the last moment the snake sprinter twisted his body side ways in a small leap. The plan had worked because his body zipped between two of the poles without any hindrance. Being scrawny is not such always a bad thing. No time to keep contemplating. There were other barriers to cross and a false imp to reach. The next challenge was some bamboo stalks had fallen among each other on the treacherous path. They blocked the path and one would have to stop and take another direction. Well a sane person would. Shisei watched as his ghost adversary jumped on of the bamboo logs to another making a quick scale up and over the edge so that its body could not be seen anymore. The young snake performed the same action that the image did seconds before. He leaped on one of the broken rods and quickly leaped to another until his body bounded over the obstacle. Sadly he did not wait to see the other side of this obstacle. Then Shisei would have known that the land dropped a few meters lower than before it. The height of landing had a significant difference and would give the snake child a task to land.

Gravity slowed down with Shisei’s ascent into the air, but as his body began to descend the physical laws began to make themselves known very quickly. Shisei could feel the acceleration as body began to drop like a stone. The cold wind whipped through his clothes and blew his eggplant colored locks above his head. They looked like some type of purple anemone swirling their tentacles into the air. The snake child straightened both legs out in front of him. His first thought was to try and land on both feet. He could catch himself and continue running after the vision in his mind. Or so he thought. As soon as the boy landed, his legs gave out under him. To the side his body lurched until it went into a roll that propelled on the ground through the dirt and twigs. He came to a stop half a minute later sputtering out a few blades of grass and a few bamboo twigs from his mouth. His eyes glanced up to see his apparition waiting for him a few feet away. The mind’s shadow had its back turned waiting for Shisei to return to his feet.
