Farferalloie How do you play viola? Like a violin or a mini cello? O.o;; BACH IS AWESOME! XD Er.. like a viola! haha! Not like a mini-cello that's just strange. And yes, Bach is the most awesome.

Lol, okies. I was just wondering, because I've seen pictures where it's been played both like a violin and in an upright position on the edge of the chair.

Um.. I'm barely learning Viola, and it's really hard for me.. maybe I'm just not that musically inclined but still.. XD I'm normally a woodwind player [[Mainly Bass Clarinet if you want specifics]] but I've recently been learning viola, and I was wondering like.. are there any tricks to it? Pretty vague question, but anything would help.. It's pretty fun so far, but I don't know how to tune it all that good yet.. so after a few days it sounds utterly horrifying to myself. x3

I'm a violist, and have been playing for...gosh, six years now. I just made the Youth Symphony Orchestra this year, and our first concert is coming up. I am the youngest player in there, so I have to really work at it. But it's fun. I also play the trumpet. I'm only a third-year, though.
Incredible Tilly, it takes you a while to get good tone and figure out what to do with your fingers on a string instrument...just like any other instrument. Tricks? Ahh....That is a vague question, you're right. Hmm... Watch your bow hand and how it goes over the string, that has a lot to do with the sound.

Incredible Tilly: Two really great pieces of advice on producing a good tone my friend gave to me are: Balance the bow on the string you're playing on, and glide over the string.
I'm just starting on violin myself, and getting the pitch of the notes right is most likely going to be the most difficult for me. Along with tuning.

Hi! I was in the string ensemble (I played violin) in 4th and 5h grade, but then they made me choose between that and concert band, and, well, I chose concert band. I'm definitely glad I did, but I miss playing a string instrument and I want to take it up on my own just for fun. I never actually bought a violin, but I'm glad I didn't do that, either, because over the years I've decided that if I played a string instrument, I'd want to play the viola. Anyways, after over 5 years of not having anything to do with string instruments, I might ask my parents for a viola for Christmas, but I have a few questions to ask the experts (i.e. you guys) first. First of all, is it worth buying an instrument just to play in your free time? I don't want to buy an instrument just to lose interest and/or not have time to practice it due to homework or whatever. If you have an instrument that you only play for fun, what motivates you to practice? Also, I have no idea about what the trustworthy brands are or how much a good viola should cost. I saw this on ebay and it's not at a bad price even with shipping and handling, but can anyone tell me if it looks okay to purchase? I also found this one which is a bit more expensive but is also not from ebay. Thank you very much for any advice you can give me!

I've seen a violin from ebay, not too bad, plastic and plywood, but that's the standard beginner. However, the ebay ones are made in China and will have a higher chance of cracking, as my friend's violin proves.

I play the string bass. There's only two bass players in my orchestra at school... I've only been playing for a year, (I quit violin to play bass) and the other person has been playing since last September. I'm in 8th grade. The music teacher also lets me play with the advanced band. (it means i get to skip math!!! lol ) I've been playing piano for 10 years, outside of school, and I still do violin for fun.
