The strangers did not answer but left them lying there, conveniently out of the way, as they unbuckled the horses from the carriage. The horses were also sleepy, but began to regain their senses as they were moved away from the spell.

The mage, for his part, stopped working on the spell in order to conserve his energies. They had not even made it to the capital yet, and he was already weaving spells! The spell would begin to dissipate, but, he hoped, not allow the two to get up until after they were through with the horses.

With four horses on their stuck carriage, it was much easier to ease out of the mud. They were beginning to unhook the two stolen horses just as Arril and Theron began to feel as if they could get up. Strangely, they had not bothered to bind the two, but they did keep their swords more out in the open now, ready for use.

((I'm assuming a few things here, one of which might complicate things between Theron and Arril, and the strangers. Veinkiller, I dont know if you have realized it yet, but Arril doesn't know Theron's name yet. I beleive Arril has told his name, but I know for certain that he doesn't know Theron's. Perhaps they may bond later, when conditions are a little safer, or if they are captives...)

Arril's immediate thought when he was able to regain his thoughts were that of confusion and rage. He could not feel Sih on him, and he could not see her anywhere. "Knaves..." He hissed, "KNAVES!"

He struggled to get up, but was still groggy from the mage's spell. As he looked up, he saw their two hores still hooked onto the stranger's carriage. His rage burned deeply and he opened his mouth to utter a shout of danger and death to his horses in their own tongue before the strangers could unhook them.

hearing Arril's voice in that waver and tone panicked the horses into jumping off into a run. With them leading the stranger's horses behind them, the whole of the stranger's carriage bolted off into the evening.

"Deceiving liars!" Arril bellowed, his horrible accent hissing and spitting; half of it coming out as reptillian tongue. His rational mind began to recede as his instincts pushed him to kill the strangers. He grabbed for his procured knife and grunted as his tail broke free of it's bonds.

He was still groggy from the spell, but that would change in a few moments...

The men who held the horses backed away quickly from the now moving carriage. The woman and the mage, who were in the carriage, rushed to gain control of the reigns, which were attached, at least, to their own horses. Their horses were well trained and possessed loyalty and love for the humans now tugging on their reigns. The carriage began to slow as the two center horses forced the others to calm down.

Meanwhile, the men who were no longer in possession of carriage or horse approached Arril swiftly and angrily. Judging by the fact that he had woken and now began to rise, they knew that the spell would have slow, weak affects on their own persons. All drew their swords; the closest man drew his shortest sword, almost short enough to be called a knife, and hit Arril with the butt of it. First he knocked the groggy man back down, then he aimed for the head.

((I did realize that. I have been waiting for a time to tell Arril, Theron's name, but it might be a while until I find an actual way of telling him. Theron isn't very trusting of many people, so he might not tell you his name right away as well.))

Theron had started to wake up as well, a while later after Arril had. Standing up slowly, he looked around and saw the men draw their swords. Picking up his own knife, he looked to see Arril get hit with the butt of one of the man's short sword. Seeing that, he was trying to wake up as he ran over to the man, and jumped on his back.

Placing his knife to the mans throat, he pressed the blade into it, as he stayed on the back of the man. "Die!" He shouted as he slid the blade past the man's throat.

Arril's head rang with the blow from the blade. He shook his head and looked up at the struggle the boy was having with the man. He rational mind brought his instincts to shuddering halt as he saw the boy slit the man's throat.

"Draw back!" ordered the female from the carriage. From her perspective, and the mage that had stayed with her, the men who were supposed to be protecting her were getting in a tangent scuffle. It seemed that the strangers were more desperate than they had allowed for, and now it was time to minimize their losses.

The circle of men that had nearly closed around them, 6 not counting the man whose throat was now slit, began to open up at their backs. The soldiers did not run away, but methodically unraveled their offensive position, stepping backwards towards the carriage with their swords still drawn. There was no pretense surrounding their foreign nature; Theron and Arril caught glimpses not only of their odd swords but also of light armor now visible under undone tunics and vests.

Though murder glinted in their eyes, they drew back steadily and withheld their tongues. It was the woman who again addressed Theron and Arril from the shadows of the carriage. "Get out of our sight," she demanded. Whatever curiosity they may have possessed about the snake or Arril's body which surely one of the 9 (total) had seen, was not worth jeopardizing their mission further.

Trees lined the stream that separated the two from the woods proper. To run that way, they would have to run past the carriage, but at the moment it did not look like the foreigners intended to pursue. If they ran now, their only loss would be the horses, which were still connected to the carriage.

Theron had hidden his knife back into his robes some where, and grabbed the sword the now dead guard had held. Holding it in his hand, he looked at them, and watched them as they backed up. Looking around a bit, he watched the men, and waited to see what Arril would do, but he kept his distance from him as well.

Theron had wiped some of the blood from the man he had killed. He started shaking, unsteadily, knowing he had now killed some one. To him, he was now a murderer. His hands shook, and his legs felt like butter to him. Feeling uneasy, he closed his eyes, and tried to calm himself down, but it did not work. Not knowing what to do, he just stood there, shaking.

((What a world of hurt they have entered... I dont see your intentions, but I will follow them, for now.))

"Arril." Sih hissed from under the carriage.

He moved his hand towards her voice so she could slither up his sleeve. "I thought you had been taken."

She pulled herself along his arm and settled herself against her usual spot in silence. Arril looked up at all of the soldiers and his instincts started to itch away at the back of his rational mind. The impeccable urge to run begun to form along his thoughts. "What are you?" He hissed at the men, more under his breath than at them directly.

He eyed the boy and then his satchel on the side of the carriage. The boy's satchel would be in the interior of the carriage, out of their reach. "Arril!" Sih hissed loudly this time.

He narrowed his eyes at the men and the boy, wishing they would disappear. "Move boy!" Arril hissed, getting up and grabbing his satchel.

Bow, arrows, some materials... that was all he needed. As for the boy, because of his foolishness, a man was slain and they forfeit the horses and carriage because of this.

the horses...

Arril walked towards the boy and swiped the odd sword the boy had taken from the choking soldier. It felt heavy, but not unwieldy. He knelt down over the man, pushing the boy ahead of him. He did not know of any words to say to the dying man, and he saw that the wound was light. it would take an hour or more for the man to bleed out.

He got up and cautiously edged towards the soldiers near the carriage, unlacing the pouch of coins he had left from buying the supplies.

He tossed it at the soldiers' feet and continued towards the stream, not taking their eyes off them.

(I'm having to assume that Theron would follow Arril, please tell me if I need to correct my post. Sorry for the length, but there's a lot of exposition so that Draco will know some things that Arril should know xd DUN DUN DUN)

The soldiers' faces were frozen in a rictus of obedience designed to mask whatever hate or fear they possessed. Nobody moved to pick up the coins, not to be rude, but simply to keep their defensive position around the carriage.

"May we never meet again," the lady replied passively. She too, was trained to hide her emotions when necessary, as much to hide her intentions as to prevent undesirable reactions from other people.

Arril and Theron were allowed to leave in relative peace. It was a loss for every one, for the blood spilt and the carriage abandoned in the road. However, since they were not harassed, the two were able to take whatever they needed from the carriage, the interior of which still contained many back packs still packed with useful items. Since Arril and Theron had rummaged through these for weapons and food, they would know what would be the best to grab at this short notice.

The soldiers remained still until the renegades had disappeared in the woods on the other side of the bridge. If Arril and Theron looked back, they would see that the foreigners did not raid the abandoned carriage. They simply wrapped their dead man in a rough black cloth, set him in their own wagon, and were off. The delay would cause them to stop for the night before reaching the inner city, and they were vaguely aware that this would provide an opportunity to track them, as well as generally put them in more danger in an unknown country side. For this reason they would get rid of any thing that might prompt revenge from the renegades; though they had taken his coins, they would be selling his horses to the first willing buyer and watching their backs (and their actions) more closely in the days to come.

As for Arril and Theron, the woods had a welcoming feeling as dark set in, even for the city slicker. A soft breeze made the trees whisper, and as the foreigners began to pull away, moving branches appeared purposeful. Theron might be able to write it off as his imagination, but Arril had experience in other woods, and would know that something strange was affecting either their perception or the woods itself.

Arril would know that plants can be infused with the will of stronger beings, even reflecting the moods of others in an accidental manner. They were like hollow or half-full vessels, almost reaching awareness of their own and easily swayed by way of magic. It was for this reason that certain magical beings could so change the mood and the danger associated with a stretch of woods, just by their presence. The woods to the east of Feretris, from where Arril had come, had occasionally felt such influences in small, localized doses when the occasional phooka or kelpie might wander through. The phooka would sometimes converse with regular creatures, keeping much older legends alive. Though sparse in detail, rumor had it that once the eastern wood had been much larger, and dominated by with an iron fist by a creature or group of creatures that was thought (or hoped) to have since passed away. Regular creatures still fearfully watched for any such large magically influence; it was like a prey-predator instinct.

The whispers around them became like ripples in a pond, converging at the edge to form discernible patterns: "Welcome." Variations of the welcoming feeling and the word itself repeated around them. It was just on the edge of perception, made of rustling leaves as it were.

((oh my gosh, I cannot express how much that I like plants. Read the secret life of plants, and you'll get the idea... also, if you have played Half Life's Portal, I believe the turrets and their cutsey language and ways are the most accurate way to depict the way plants act and think like. As for trees; trees (in my opinion,) are more mature and set in their ways. They can be either sinister in nature, or kind. like a grandma it's pretty cool.))

After they had put at least a league or two between the strange soldiers, he smiled for the first time since his entrance in the world of Feretris. They had been walking in silence, Arril with his bow strung and ready, Theron with whatever weapon he had procured.

Arril loosened his grip on the bow and allowed his gait to relax, which still didn't make much noise, compared to the boy. He looked all around at the enormity of the old woods, and sighed happily. though it wasn't the woods he was familiar with, it was as close to home as it could get.

Arril slung his bow along his shoulder and placed the arrow with it's brethren in the sling. "We can rest here, but be wary. There is a Púka nearby." He stated, sitting against a large tree root and rubbing his feet. He had long since discarded the cumbersome boots, but they had left a lasting ache.

As he started unraveling his leather bindings from his feet, Sih slid along his arm, then leg to slither along the ground. "A Púka, or a damned kelpie. Dont trust them both for liars." She hissed, receding into the shade beneath an odd-shaped log.

Arril nodded, but kept the information from the boy. "You dont have to wear that dress anymore, child." He said, leaning back and closing his eyes.

Theron had been following Arril, as Arril had seemed to know about the woods. Just following him, he kept the knife with him, and picked up a few sticks, and taped them on the ground as they walked.

Starting to feel the strain of being forced to work for the nobles, for no money none the less, he let out a small sigh. Loosening up some, he looked around the woods, unsure about where they where, he didn't care.

As Arril had said that they could rest, Theron sent himself upon a low branch of a tree, forgetting he had been wearing the dress the entire time, he closed his eyes, and started rubbing the tip of one of the sticks against a rock.

He looked up when Arril had said something about Puka. "Ok." He quietly said as he still sat there. Taking off the dress as Arril had told him he can take it off now, reminded him he had still had it on, and tossed it aside.

"Theron." He said as he continued rubbing the sticks tip against the ground, making it have a sharp point after a bit.

The forest grew more comfortable, more inviting as they traveled into it. The whispering words stopped as the men did what the forest wanted. When they stopped to rest, for Arril at least, it would feel like home.

Sih, on the other hand, knew that a magical being was drawing near. Perhaps in a time before Arril had found himself frozen in his present form, he too would have been able to pinpoint exactly what direction it was coming from. After all, the creature was not trying to hide herself. Usually it was when such a creature hide itself that mischief was afoot-- or ahoof as the case may be.

It was indeed something like a kelpie, yet this horse-beast was white, and had a single horn coming out of her forehead. She walked slowly into their view, snorting in greeting as much as in surprise at finding one of the men half naked. Her magic seemed to leave trails of sparks, even to the human eye not attuned to magic. It was both a parlor trick designed to dazzle these mere humans, as well as a sign that she had enough magic to spare on such frivolities.

Welcome to my wood, she started in a quiet, unassuming voice quite contrary to the words themselves. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Theron was still busy doing what ever he was doing, as everything was happening. He heard a small sound come out from no where, or what he assumed, as he didn't pay much attention to their surroundings.

He looked up for a moment, and saw what seemed to be a unicorn, staring wide eyed at it, he just stared, not really knowing what even he was going to do. Hearing it speak, he jumped a bit, and fell backwards onto the ground, and hurriedly stood back up.

"W-w-what a-are yo-ou?" He stuttered as he stared in amazement to see a Unicorn standing there, not even sure if it was one, or his mind playing tricks on him.

"Sih!" Arril hissed.

Within seconds Sih was round his leg, scooting up along her spot. Arril stood and let his hands hang loose around his thighs. "Theron, step away from her and keep your hands to yourself..."

He turned to the kelpie, keeping his expression cool. "Good day, creature of the wood." Arril said in his gutteral use of the common tongue. Sih nestled her head under Arril's floppy ear, so the Kelpie could not hear or see what she said. "We must be cautious, but disarming. remember the tricks you played on the bears; the bees... use that same trickery here."

Arril nodded and hoped the boy wouldn't be fooled by the creature's outwardly kind appearance.

"Forgive us for intruding on your most humble wood. It is as my own wood far to the east. I couldn't help but rest and appreciate it's beauty. The boy and I are just passing through." Arril said with a bow.

Flattery... he hoped that disarmed the creature enough.

"Uhhh... Kelpi?" He backed up some, not really sure. "But, it looks like a unicorn." Still mesmerized by what it was, he felt as if he couldn't look away. A mystical creature that he had heard where extinct, standing right infront of him.

"But..." He said some backing up a little more, not taking his off the Kelpi, or the unicorn. Feeling confused, he just stared.
