Heh... I've already read the ending to the manga... And what can I say?
The ending is perfect. As in, it fits the plot. It's like any other show where most kids will say "that's a bad ending!" but really... Sometimes if you have a happy ending out of the blue and with no real reasoning behind it, just to please the crowd, then you have a lame ending.
It would have killed the whole "we've thought the whole plot through from the start" look the manga had all the time, really.
But uhm... Yeah, there were people with superpowers in this one. Raito, Misa, Higuchi... The power to kill someone on a whim, and just by seeing their face or knowing their name and face is not something a normal human can do.
Also, Ryuuku got shot and didn't get a single scratch. Impervious to bullets, ability to subsist without food for really long periods of time, and the ability to walk through walls/remain invisible to anyone but their "owner" means the Shinigami also used "super" powers.

They could only kill because they had the book. And Ryuk is a death god. I'm not sure shooting a god would kill it. Unless your gun/ bullets were called Godslayer or something.
I guess that's true though... But can you really call it super powers if they are limited to having the book.

Another note: If it's true that the anime Death Note ends with both L and Raito/Light dead, then the manga's ending differs from that a lot. And it's even got an epilogue where the author clearly wanted to ******** the reader's mind. Kira is more than a person, isn't 'he'? So Kira could be back.
Also, Ryuuku redeemds himself from his "bored a*****e" status (at least in my mind) in the ending of the manga.

Well atleast the anime is semi accurate. Some anime are totally off from the manga... Kira COULD very well be back at some point in time. It is a title after all. If anyone sees killings start again they'll say Kira is back. Ryuuk might get bored again. Who knows?

Michi Lunamarae Ryuuk might get bored again. Who knows? Ryuuku is so easily bored, too... And hey, maybe they'll run outta apples in the netherworld. I may be one of the few that liked Misa. She's so smart in her naivety sometimes (at least in the manga.)

And well L did have to die to keep the story going, if he did not die the story would have gotten boring after a while with notrhing really big happening. L was a great character but he needed to die to keep the story going. GAARA!!

Gaara wasn't a good guy, either.
And from the standpoint of moral, neither was L. He had let people die to prove his theories about Kira, once and again.
And yes, some characters need to die. Some characters even die to bring the story to an end, or their death help bringing the end upon the story.
Also, please refrain from the overload of OMGs and such stuff... While you may think it's cute, it makes real anime fans not take anything said in such posts as relevant. I, for one, ignore posts like those.
And deaths in Narutoverse aren't always definitive... In Naruto, all they have to do is gather the seven Jutsu Ball and ask Kyuubi-Long to revive their fallen friends. mrgreen rofl ninja

Think of it this way. In the end they were only human. They have to die at some point. And key character deaths always move things along nicely. Except Axel... he's a nobody... But he was human at one point. Can we really define what good and evil are. Seen from the eyes of villains the things they do are probably good deeds to them. If you call L a good guy, while he sends off men to die to find Kira, then what do you call a villain with legions of minions that he/she sends to be killed in their stead.
