"If she hasn't inherited a soul, she's not dangerous. Release her," Josh decided after a moment. "The explanation will come in a second."

"And you?" Alan asked Taylor.

Joe laughed. "Useless carbon, hmm?" Before he could continue, he had a wierd tingling between his ears. It quickly escalated until it was a lancing pain. "What the hell!" he shouted.
Roland what's happening?

Wow, really? I hadn't guessed that.

Neither does you stating the obvious.
Joe rolled back and clutched his head.

commented Keldan.

He sounded interested. Siber felt him give the probe a jolt and watched Joe spasm.

Abruptly, Joe began choking for breath as Keldan dropped his probe. Siber glanced at him with a look of mild interest. "Something wrong?"

He laughed quietly.

Joe glanced at Siber, still touching his head lightly. The pain had vanished suddenly, and now Siber lookwed like he was talking to his Warlock soul.
Roland?

Was that him? Doing that thing with the pain?

s**t. That HURT.

Legion suddenly looked at an odd angle to the floor from the third-story room he was training Takeshi and Erik in.

"One. Moment," he growled.

Siber shuddered momentarily.

ever to attempt violate the mind of another Warlock without my explicit permission, especially on the grounds of an area I've worked concealing magic.> Legion stated calmly.

Before Siber could answer, he felt Legion withdraw.

"Aww, no good," chuckled Siber softly. "Legion wants us to come upstairs, Joe. Shall we go?"

He got up and walked to the door, calmly waiting for Joe.

Joe stood up slowly and shook his head one last time.
We're....about to meet Legion?

Anything I should know before we go?
much, more painfully.>
Right, so.....no pressure then.
He set off after Siber, trying to relax.

Siber attempted for a while to navigate the corridors on his own. However, he quickly gave up when Keldan finally reminded him that he could sense Legion's presence and began guiding him.
he asked the Warlock.

He proceeded in silence, reluctant to strike up a conversation with Joe, mostly because he had nothing good to say at the moment. It took a few minutes, but he finally reached a passageway opening to Legion's location.

The doors opened of their own accord before either Warlock could touch them, showing Legion, facing away from the door, with a hand vaguely pointed towards it.

"Come in," he declared. A little fire sputtered from Takeshi's fingertips. "Focus!" Legion yelled, clearly going impatient with Takeshi's inability. "The more clearly the sigil is defined, the more powerful and accurate your magic will be. Before you leave this room, you will be able to draw the fire and air sigils with your eyes closed, do you hear me?!"

Joe shivered when the door opened. Feeling Legion so close was extremely unsettling.
Roland...

Joe took a deep breath and entered the room, feeling like his fate was now beginning to change.

Siber duly went in. For Keldan's benefit, he quickly glanced around the room for potential pitfalls, then took a slower look for himself. Being good at theater means always knowing the stage, and this was a stage to top them all.

"All right. Listen. You two are going to join these two in practicing magic. Keldan, you're going to instruct Siber in Thaumaturgy how you see fit; Joe, I'm going to give you a quick evocation lesson," Legion said. He railed off his previous lesson. "Now, all of you, get to work. I have something to do. If any of you hurt one another, you will be held responsible. Keldan, Siber, if you can't keep a leash on your demons, go through that door." He vaguely gestured to a door off to the side. "At least that way, the only person you can doom with your bad judgment and control will be yourself."

He strode to the entrance, opened the door, and turned for one last word.

"At no circumstances are any of you to perform any magic on each other. This is the practice room. Learn its location. Do not perform any major spells outside of this room without my oversight. Once you all have achieved basic competence with your spells, you're getting a mission to retrieve a few of our dear friends who have been captured."

He left and vaulted over the rails to second floor, out of sight. Two zombies entered the room and stood to either side of the door; a third one closed it from the outside.

Siber decided before obeying to attempt reconciliation with Joe. He tapped the other man on the shoulder.
"Joe? I wanted to apologize for what Keldan and I did- we didn't know it was going to cause physical pain. I didn't apologize earlier because, well... I couldn't be certain at first. And the reason Keldan did it in the first place was because when you're in a place this dangerous... you've gotta use every tool you can, you know?" He scratched his head sheepishly and flashed a small, apologetic grin, hoping the deception worked- he really hadn't known it would hurt the guy and hadn't wanted to, and he needed allies. Just, for the past several years he hadn't concerned himself overly much with other people's levels of comfort- or pain.
This was his forte. Screw "thou shalt not lead a blind man down the wrong path"- Siber had learned to "not bear false witness" (or 'don't friggin' lie,' as he preferred), and so he didn't. Well, he only did in emergencies. And certain major problems. And the occasional minor aberration. But not just for fun.
Usually.
Leading blind men was another thing entirely.
Keldan "raised" an approving "eyebrow."

Joe shook his head. "It's no big deal. I understand where you're coming from, and I'd want to know that kind of thing too. Just....ask next time, please." He smiled back at Siber, then turned and began practicing his evocation.
inside his head, Roland sighed happily.

Joe felt power surging through his body and realized that thing were easy to do for him.

Well, keep training. I don't want Legion mad at us.

Takeshi got another little sputter of flame from his fingers.
Haru advised.
Takeshi answered with mock calm,

Frustrated with Haru, and turning to see Joe succeeding at small fireballs, his resolve hardened. He would get a fireball without their help. He meditatively focused, clearing his mind and focusing on his breathing, then nothing, not allowing himself to acknowledge anything Haru said. He slowly etched the symbol upon his consciousness. He held it firmly there as he moved through the motions Legion had advised. And in the end, he shoved his hands at a target, forcing his will through into the symbol, feeling it within him, rising, pouring out through his hands.

A small red streak burst forth.

It touched the target.

The target was bathed in red.

Bang.

"Sweet," he gloated to himself. This was worthy of a pill. Now where were they...
