I wish our section leader wasn't so ditzy. It bugs me. Anywho, an odd story that I didn't personally experience, but everyone in the symphonic band was talking about it yesterday. One of the flute players in their band somehow got her fingers stuck to her keys. I have no idea how you go about doing that.

Holy crap. I'm so glad I have rehersal as an excuse to get out of this. Tomorrow we're supposed to hop on a bus to go on a three hour drive to Tacoma for our girls basketball team's trip to state. We'd leave at 3:30, and wouldn't come back 'til 1:30 the next morning. Then we'd be expected to go to school on time as usual, and do it again the next night (thankfully we're not doing it the second night) with a competition on Friday.

Also, for our play (It's a musical) I'm in the band which plays in the finale. The choir instructor (against the composer/BD's wishes) decided she'd add fermatas of death into the middle of some of our phrases. What's worse is we don't get a conductor for the performance. The three flutes want to go on strike.

Darn! We're too poor to go to competitions I think.... You should go on strike! I would've tried for pit but i'm in the musical woot townsperson!

Maybe it's just because your BD chooses not to participate in competitions...?

Long bus rides on charter buses are fun xd But I doubt you're taking those, so, yeah... I wish our bands were more active like yours though x_x And as for the no conducter thing... that sounds kinda neat too xD I do prefer having a conducter tho... we had this sub one day, and he was like '1, 2, 3... what, am I supposed to say go?' x____x everyone was like "How did he become our sub?" o_o. So then we had this junior girl who didn't even know what the hell she was doing even tho she said she did, but she was conducting in 3/4 time when it was 4/4 time, so then we had Tapper conduct and everything was great from there on out xd

Hi...I am new to this guild...I was wondering...um...how do you play high high B flat? I lost my little fingering chart I used to own...and none of the other 5 flutists in the band will let me see theres...and our band director played trombone so he doesn't know!!!!
PostPosted: Thu Mar 03, 2005 3:57 pm

I believe high B flat is the thumb key, 4th key, 1st trill, and the e flat key.
Sorry if I don't make sense.

The thing is, it's not that we don't have a conductor, it's that we're not allowed to have one. Everyone is on stage for the finale, and because none of the singers get a conductor, we don't either.

I also need to get $247.50 to Mr. May so I can go on the trip to Disneyland. I guess our band really is involved. The cheerleaders put up signs around the school, and one says "We love our EHS band." I'd be a lot happier if cheerleaders weren't so creepy.

Hey, does anyone know what the highest note you can play on the flute is? and the fingering? Thanks! I just love playing high notes...
PostPosted: Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:24 pm

I checked out an online fingering guide.... www.wfg.woodwind.org... and here's what I got:
Really, the highest note on flute is F#4, but you can go above that with major tweaking. This is the highest note I could find...

Note: That's with a open hole B-Foot... I believe. And the chart also said: Very airy. [Does this fingering really work? Email me at wfg@woodwind.org if you have any success.-TR] I've never tried it. I haven't gone above the fourth octave D.. but I was suffering from bronchitis then. *shug*

Also, I suggest checking this out if you're looking for those upper range notes..: http://www.larrykrantz.com/rdick.htm#g4 (the whole site's good, actually)

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever spit rice? That's what we did for our flute sectional on Monday. It was odd... but I got a grain almost 8 feet with a staccato tounging... Appearently, in some renouwn flute schools, students have to master rice-spitting before even touching a flute... I always wondered why I had such trouble with tounging...

Spitting rice. Ahaha. Never heard of it. xd

I'll try it. To see if it's really good for tonguing. xp

When are you going to Disney? I know we're going next year.

We have banners that support our band around school too. At one of the football games everyone that showed up to the game and was goin' fer Whitmer was shouting for the band cuz' they love us so much! <3 xD

Our Jazz BD wanted to try something one day, and that something was apparently him not conducting us. I like it when our BDs do that cuz' we all take it as a challenge. It's awesome xD

Oh man... you know those flute players I always complain about? The ones in the second row who don't seem to give a crap. Well, Tuesday one of them actually - get ready for this - ASKED FOR HELP. Dun dun dun! And it wasn't just, "Oh, how does this go?" in the middle of class. She actually wanted me to stay after school and help her. Since I had to stay after for a sax sectional anyway, I did, and she's actually really nice. She always seemed kinda snobby before. I am starting to have hope for my flute section. XD
