The day he meets Vanya and Nadim is the best day of his life.

She's a little dark skinned ghoul with shimmering scales and two tails that lash back and forth agidly, and the first thing he ever says to her is, "It needs a river."

"There's no water," she points out immediately, and then Nadim cannonballs into the sandbox, whining loudly about how much it hurts his ******** butt.

They laugh, and then they make a fake river with his jacket, which is blue. It looks real, *** thinks.

*** boxes in his father's absence, first at the community center and later in the club his instructor invites him to. His mother is the one who drives him to tournaments, the one who bounces excitedly and keeps applauding until she sees him changed back into his normal clothing (or so it seems) when he wins his first gold medal, and the one signs him up for lessons without the need for him to ask first.

He thinks sometimes that he wishes his father were there, but he knows that sometimes there are things he needs to save for mother-son bonding time, like he's always done with building blocks and electronics (although really he just sits on the side), and he can go out with his dad and dance and joust and watch races on scare-o-vision when he's back. Whenever that is.

When he meets her - her, the pretty girl with the pale face and bouncy brown curls and too-wide red lips ("It's natural," she says, and smiles like he's the sun, which is exactly how she smiles at everyone else) and the wide, just-died eyes - he knows she's the ghoul he wants to ask to the homecoming dance.

"***," she whispers, voice soft and lovely, and she sings.

It's one of those distant memories, because he's so young - a little bundle in her arms, and his father's laughter roars beside her. She rocks him, and he laughs, too, with the song - he doesn't know the words, of course, but his smile widens every time she says ***, fitting the word easily between quickly-invented phrases. He laughs and laughs and laughs, and the memory fades, like it always does, into a toddler's snores and the tinkling of his father's glass.

Later he'll realize they were arguing, not from the memory's context but from inference.

"Hey," says Nadim. "Hey, ***, you coming?"

He's coming, of course.

They run skittering along the sidewalk, two boils headed somewhere they've never been. It's the first time either of them have been let out with just a curfew and a maximum radius to do whatever they please and so they hop the fence into the park even though the tall spindly gates are wide open and they nearly get mistaken for vandals. It's still worth it.

"No," *** says, surprising himself and the captain of the team. "No, you know that won't work. The Vampz deal with that kind of play all the time. Why not have Abesford on the left, and..."

He's lucky that his captain is flexible, and open to suggestion, and, he thinks later, he's even luckier that it actually works. It doesn't matter, though, because *** is cheered as MVP at the end of the game and his captain shakes his head and smiles at him and for once, for once, he spoke up, and nothing bad happened.

Candace would kill her if she found out. Roland had already gone in, and who knew how long he'd last before he was found out too? This was dangerous . . . reckless really. Impulse had taken control because she had been alone too long, and idle hands were the devil's playthings.

But she had done it and came out on top, no? The Haunted House wasn't as frightening a place. Trainees should not go alone the text said, but . . . She showed her, huh?

She was strong. If Candace ever found out, then she could at least give her that much, right?

Nevertheless, *** felt awful when she came back. She had risked it all, and for what: to prove she could handle herself to some screaming witch? Now someone would have a vendetta, her and others . . . the circle would only continue.

She tried her best not to think about how it had cursed her before it died.

He staggers out in front of Fiori and Leander, knowing exactly how much they don't belong. They stand quiet behind him, Fiori wide-eyed and Leander smiling knowingly. They don't actually need him there, not really, considering one of them's a fully-matured demon, but *** doesn't want them to have to deal with spit dogging their footsteps alone. "Hey, can we go to the ice cream parlor afterwards?" he asks, and Leander meets his eyes. It's obvious that he knows it's a distraction but obviously none of them mind, and little Fiori's eyes light up.

It's down the street from them, and Leander tells him later that he's proud that he didn't need to resort to violence.

Well, of course not, *** wants to say. Fiori was there. (Then he remembers that the first time they talked she asked him where to take fighting lessons, and thinks better of it.)

"Why hasn't he called yet?" *** asks.

His mother shakes her head and turns away. "He lost reception," she says, patient. If he comes closer and peeks, he can see that her brow is still furrowed resolutely.

"That's what you said an hour ago!" *** fidgets by the telephone. His mother walks over to their bedroom and pulls out the board games - Scare-opoly today.

"Come on," she calls. "I bet you can't beat me!"

He stampedes over and plays.

The same thing happens the next day, and the next, and after that she tells him she's glad they got to say good-bye, and that's how *** learns his father won't be coming back.

[main memory 4]

It was late, almost 4 am when he received the text.

Quote:
I'm stuck on this level.

he groaned and rolled over. a few minutes later another arrived.

Quote:
Oh I beat it.

And so it went until he finally turned his phone off, waking only to find 52 texts sent at various times. He liked the attention but... some nights, this was a bit much.

Mrs. Megiddo Jones who lives two streets over owns a little dog minipet. It's the sort with sleek, barely-there hair, the sort that thumps its tail on the ground at the same time as it scratches its ear with its hind leg, belly exposed, in the middle of the sidewalk while she's walking it. Mrs. Jones, tall and radiant and probably wealthy, thinks it's the funniest thing, even (especially) when it runs between ***'s legs on his way to the corner store - especially, especially if he's in a hurry.

She always tosses her hair, blows kisses at the dog, and turns to scold him for his lack of manners.

Of course, then, it's an accident when he steps on the leash - just so, so it doesn't slide up between the cleave of his hooves - when he asks to pet it the next week, and of course it's an accident when he scratches its belly - belly! - a little too hard and it scrambles back up and starts barking. There's no blood, and he says, apologetically, that his mom's little swamp dragon (with his tough little hide and scales all over his body, which he doesn't mention but she knows) has never been so sensitive.

When he turns the corner he breaks into a gallop anyway. The farther away he's ever from Mrs. Jones, the better.

Laurus wasn't sure what she expected from her sacrifice. Creation had promised knowledge, but this felt too much like fading away, like losing more of who she was. Had she been tricked? Too late to do anything about it now, but she meant to do better next time. If there were a next time.

How had she gotten to this point, so helpless, so aimless without the guidance of the Goddesses? Anger flared up briefly, to be replaced by a certain grudging resignation. There was hardly been another path to choose, was there? Once upon a time, she might have made a new one for herself, but not here, not now. Accepting that in lieu of better alternatives, she faded away.

He knocks his father's block tower over one Tuesday because he's not building it the way Mommy would: she likes towers (three of them, always) and symmetry and seeing wild array of colors blend into each other, and here he is with blue and green and brown in little rows, building a regular little building, the sort that leases out space and collects rent every month.

He considers himself lucky that his father took it in stride.

{ main blessing two }

"Nehfeimsah! Get off that armoire! I didn't buy it for you to use it as a nesting ground--" Her scolding was interrupted by a nasty crash to her left, the dragon whirling to stare with aghast as a red and black furry critter pounced away from where it'd knocked a rather extravagant display of crystal eggs of varying colors.

One rolled into another display and she covered her eyes before she could see Malvokun slide into that one too. "I am going to skin you both," she wailed into her hands, the sounds muffled by flesh and bone and her own loathing for the moment. She just wanted to get her work done. Her pets were just not going to allow that.

"That is it! I'm sending you to Tavi. Least he'll likely have the energy to deal with you two," she snarled, storming off towards the door to her room. She was all too aware of the chimes of delighted hisses and trills from behind her. If she didn't know better, she'd have sworn they'd planned this...

Before they grow up it's always four of them - Nadim and Nadya and *** and Vanya. Her mother thinks it's funny because their names all match. They just like spending time together.

Vanya stops talking to them the day after her mom sees them in the town hall meeting listening to the mayor - Nadim and Nadya and Vanya all gossipy over ***'s slow nods and closed eyes and smiles. She has to learn respect, she says, and so do they, before they can talk again.

After that, he only ever sees her in passing.
