The shuriken flew in a larger arc than her small ones, and slashed its way around a tree, leaving a several-inches-deep gash in the wood... Before it wound its way around the tree and started coming back at the girl. "Bloody hell..." She ran to the side and the shuriken drilled halfway into the ground where she had been standing. She started laughing again. That was awesome! She hadn't expected to get it today, let alone on her second throw. She grinned and pulled the shuriken out of the ground and shaking it off on the backswing. She spun forward again, flinging the shuriken again towards that same tree.

Fuuma Shuriken: Double-edged throw Part 1

The fuuma shuriken can be thrown in two ways: One way is used by amateurs, and is the technique in which the shuriken flies straight from the thrower. The second technique is more difficult. It requires the user to throw the shuriken in such a way that it returns to the thrower. This technique, however, is dangerous in that it opens the user to the return flight of the shuriken. This can be deadly, as the shuriken can injure the thrower on the return flight. This is the first part of the training, that practices the original throw, but that the user does not attempt to catch the shuriken on its return flight.

Lula watched as the shuriken drilled into the tree... And stayed there. She sighed. It had looked like a good throw. But then she started smiling. It had been a good throw. It had such power behind it... She just needed to work on her technique. And so she would. She flipped the third shuriken open and weighed it in her hands. It was an amazing shuriken... She was in love with them. She wound it back and threw the shuriken again at the tree. She was sure it would work this time.

The shuriken flew from Lula's fingers like it had been designed for her and had a mind of its own. Not only did it clip the tree she was aiming at in half, it curved back around and shot back at Lula. It hit the ground beside her. She hadn't even moved. The shuriken would have been in exactly the right place for Lula to have caught it, but she didn't have the nerve to do it. She was going to make damn sure she knew what she was doing before she lost an arm to this. She looked back up at the tree that was falling to the side at the point where it had been sliced in half with the shuriken not so much as slowing down. She gulped and wondered just how much damage that could do to her. Note to self: invest in metal-plated gloves. Those would certainly help stop the shuriken from slicing her in half. If she was willing to sacrifice a hand to do it.

Was a hand worth her life? Probably not. She laughed at how much her hand meant to her. She was going to make her living with these hands... Although she supposed she could always work around it... Wait... She wasn't going to lose a hand at all. She was too good for that. She grabbed the shuriken that had just returned and wound up to throw it again, at a new tree.

The blade flew true. It carved a gouge around the tree and started its return flight to Lula. She was going to have to move. Fast. She jumped to the side and rolled out of the way, the shuriken gouging a new hole in the ground. Looked like she had a new favorite shuriken. Two in a row was a damn good record for this.

Pulling the shuriken out of the ground, she shook it off and inspected the blade. It was still incredibly sharp. She grinned. These were going to be fun. Pulling it back, she launched it forward again, hoping for a repeat of the last two throws.

And she got exactly what she wanted. As she stepped to the side, the shuriken drilled into the ground. There wasn't time for happiness. There wasn't time to celebrate. This was far too serious and far too deadly to be distracted by celebrations. She pulled the shuriken out of the ground and focused on the task at hand. She took a deep breath, wound herself back, and whipped the weapon forward and away from her. She was going to get this. She had to. Otherwise, she'd not be able to do anything but waste the potential these weapon have. Their only advantage to smaller shuriken other than their damage was their ability to fetch themselves. Otherwise, she could just be more accurate with the smaller shuriken and be done with it.

The shuriken lodged itself into the new tree. She sighed. She'd been sure she'd had it. Alright, then... She opened her last shuriken and aimed it at the tree. She tried to focus on her technique. She was absolutely sure that just one more time and she'd have the technique down. She took a breath and wound herself back, like she was about to throw the discus. And she spun back and launched the shuriken at the tree with as much force as she could muster and still maintain control over her technique. She wasn't going to screw this up.

She botched the throw. The shuriken rolled much like the first one she'd thrown. In fact, it landed in the same spot. She sighed and walked over to grab the two shuriken that were laying one the ground. She reached down and grabbed them before she walked back to the mark. Setting one of the shuriken down, she faced her target tree once again. She took a deep, steadying breath and wound herself back, hoping for the shot that will prove she knows this. She was going to get it. She knew it.

The third shuriken that she's going to have to retrieve drilled into the second tree to withstand her onslaught, and stuck itself into the tree. dammit... She grabbed the fourth shuriken and focused on not focusing on the technique. This was going to work. Every time she focused, she messed up. She needed to let the technique flow naturally from her body. She laughed to loosen herself up, and tried to shake out the kinks. She brought the shuriken back and spun herself forward, setting the shuriken to fly at the already tortured tree.

She watched as the fourth shuriken dug into the tree. She sighed. Whether she was more surprised that she had gotten it right four times or whether she had botched it four times in a row was unsure. She took a steadying breath and ran up to retrieve her gigantic shuriken. With no little effort, she pulled her four shuriken. She pulled one from the first tree that had been sliced in half, and the other three that had stuck in the second tree. It took almost all her strength to get them out, and she was amazed to see the gouges that her failures had made... But even more amazing was the damage left by the shuriken that had returned to her. They had carved gigantic crescent-shaped scars into the trees. She grinned and laughed before she ran back to her mark to test her new skill again. She went through the motions, flinging the shuriken forward, using her front fingers to aim the shot before turning.

And she botched the entire shot again. It hit her hip on the swing-around, and it rolled to the side, hitting the dirt and staying there. She cursed her luck. No. It wasn't luck, it was a lack of skill. She needed to work harder, or else she'd never be a shinobi. That's right. She didn't consider herself a shinobi anymore. She wasn't a shinobi until she could do this. And she would not let herself be considered anything less than a shinobi. She took another breath and readied her next shuriken. She was going to get this. She had to. Otherwise, she'd never be a ninja.

She brought it back, and whipped it at her target. She was going to get this... And she was enjoying it, despite her best efforts not to.

Of course... More work never hurt anyone. She would be all the stronger because of it. She laughed as the shuriken tore into the tree, leaving yet another permanent scar in the poor thing. She wasn't particularly violent, but she was having a lot of fun, anyway. She jumped up and down a few times, trying to clear her mind and loosen her body up. She grabbed the second-to-last shuriken and brought it back behind her, listening to the music that had finally decided to show her where she was wrong. She adjusted her course and technique to better follow the music's instructions. When she let the shuriken fly, she heard a chord play.

Discordant... Enharmonic... Painful... Her shuriken dug in not six inches below the last one. She sighed softly. This was so amusing that she actually had to force herself to stay calm... But she couldn't any longer, and she started laughing again as she picked up the fourth fuuma shuriken, weighing it in her hands. This was the one that had cut that tree in half... She laughed again. She had a good feeling about this one. She listened to the music and everything she saw seemed to slow down... The music played softly and slowly. It was telling her to take her time... She brought the shuriken back and started her forward swing. She saw the world blur as she looked back at her target, and her arm followed, the shuriken flying off and speeding back into normal motion as the final chord sounded in her mind.

Less horrible, but not by much. She walked over to the shuriken that seemed determined to remain grounded and ran back to her mark, deciding for a flashier throw mid-stride. She leaped forward and turned in mid-air, flinging the shuriken toward the tree without actually trying to hit it. She was going to have fun with this, she decided, and so she was. Whether or not she made this hit was irrelevant. She just wanted to make herself proud. And the way to do that was to train. The way to do that was to not be bored with the work. So she would have fun.

It lodged in with the other three. She laughed and ran up to pull them out. This poor tree was never going to make it.... She shrugged. It wasn't her problem. The Senju could repair a tree... If they could grow entire villages, it had to mean they could put a tree back together again... She shrugged again and ran back to her mark. She was going to try some more. She wasn't going to give up until she had it. And she wasn't going to have it until she could get it one more time. After that she would feel comfortable with it. Chances were that she was only aiming too far in, and striking at the tree as opposed to around the tree. She nodded. That could be it... She picked one of the fuuma shuriken up. It was the one that didn't like to fly... She smiled and shot it towards the target.

Success! She noticed sadly that that tree would never recover... Because it wasn't there anymore... It fell on top of the other tree she had felled, and the shuriken returned in an appreciating arc, digging in beside her. "Well, now. Seems like ye finally got over yer little bout of yer fear of heights, now didn't ye?" She smiled, picking all four shuriken up by the hoops in their center, holding them over her shoulder and walking to a clearing. She didn't need trees for this... This was going to be much too dangerous for her to have targets involved. She rolled her shoulders and set the shuriken down in the field. Apparently, kids played sports here or something. It was a perfect rectangle... Oh, well... It suits my purposes just fine.
