I would say a tie would be most likely, but if one had to win, i think it would be Shiva. Ifrit is bigger and bulier and Shiva is so small she'd probably be a better evader and evade most attacks on her.

shiva for 3 reasons: 1. she schools ifrit in the begining of 8 2. in X she is the 3rd or 4th most powerfull Aeon and 3. She's super sexy ^^

Shiva Is not a fighter type in Body and Appearance, More of a Rouge or Monk Build. Meant to Dodge and Wear you out!
On the other Hand Ifrit is a Fighter or barbarian type. Meant to take a lot of damage and Hit you hard!
In comparison Ifrit's attacks are always vastly more destructive than Shiva's, And tend to hit a larger Area As Well! Shiva's Are faster than His yes, they Hit for good Damage, But their Area of effect seems smaller.

I said tie but if I it couldn't be a tie I guess Shiva because Ice is better than fire to me and I like the faster character types usually.

Tie. I thought about how such fight could go, from the view point of DEm-o presented. And more generally too. Conclusion was, that the one that wins the initiative has the upper hand. And stronger/tougher vs. quicker/dodger is half about luck. It could be either one.

Think A Fireball from D&D. You shot a Fireball at a man and miss him, But you hit the wall five feet behind him. The initial attack may have missed but the twenty foot blast radius is sure to hit him for the same damage.

Normally you would think that fire melts ice, but everyone knows that in FF games they are opposing elements that normally balance each other out...that said, I would have to go with Shiva on this one based mostly on FFVIII & FFX.
Other FF games have them basically equal as starter-type summons, but I think that Shiva is clearly the superior summon in VIII & X.
On a side note, I do think that seeing Ifrit in person would make you crap your pants, where Shiva would not get that same reaction. I still go with Shiva for the purposes of this game though.

Maximum 10d6 of damage to each creature on range. The opposing spell, for example Ice Wall would do more damage 1d6 +1 per caster level, but its a wall that stands still. Ice Storm is a bit different matter, at bit higher levels. /nerd redface I'm just too eagerly waiting next Sunday's D&D evening. biggrin And I'm not playing a darn wizard, I'm a warlock. xd

I love making D&D characters, but never use them, so I wouldn't really know. xp I see your point now, though, DEm-o, and it does seem to give Ifrit more of an advantage... Still not sure it would give him the win, though.
