Squall blearily rubbed a hand over his face as he walked the halls of Garden, having finished the majority of the paperwork that wasn't due until the end of the week. The mountains of paperwork weren't the worst duty he was required to perform as the commander of SeeD. No, he remembered every single word that he had to write by hand pertaining to the worst duty any commander has to perform.

"Dear Sir or Madam,

It is my sincerest regret to inform you that your son (or daughter), name goes here, has fallen in the line of his/her SeeD duties. Name here's unit was tasked with mission objective here, and came under heavy enemy fire during the course of their mission.

Name here did not hesitate or falter in the face of such opposition, and their heroic actions in the battle saved the lives of many of their comrades, and allowed the mission objective to be completed.

You have much to be proud of in the final battle of your son (or daughter). However, we at Balamb Garden share your grief, and mourn your loss as our own.

With Sympathy,
Squall Leonhart
Commander, Balamb Garden SeeD Forces"

As he went over the words in his mind, he was thankful for the few number that he had to write following this engagement. He had seen more students fall than he had written letters. How they were still alive was beyond him. For a moment there, Quistis had almost been forced to write one of those letters to Laguna Loire concerning him.

Then a numbness washed over him as he realized that he had almost been forced to write two of those letters that he very was very much thankful he hadn't. Headmaster Cid himself, and...

General Caraway.

He stumbled back into the wall, a sudden pain constricting his heart. He had almost lost Rinoa twice during that exam. Where would he be if Rinoa had died?

He knew for certain that the moment General Caraway saw the first two words of any such letter, he would have the Galbadian Rangers at Garden's doorstep immediately, looking for Squall's head.

He shook his head at that thought. If he had been forced to write such a letter to General Caraway, the general wouldn't have to expend the resources G-Army's special forces in such a way. After sending off the letter, Squall would've done the job for him.

"I... I can't live without Rinoa. Seeing her there, lying in the snow in her own blood... I lost it. All my leadership skills went right out the window. I didn't check on the students, didn't make sure we completed our objective... All I could think about was her. Her dying. In my arms."

There in the main corridor leading to all four dormitory halls, Squall sank to the Garden's tiled floor, his face buried in black leather palms.

-Rinoa crouches in the Y-branch of the tree, aiming her Rising Sun at the back of an unsuspecting T-Rexaur's neck. She was careful to cram herself into a tree high enough to be out of its reach, and thick enough to weather its thrashing and attacks so she can hang on and stay in the tree. She squeezes the trigger and the blade spins out to open a large gash in the rexaur's neck. The rexaur howls with rage and spins around, spying the painful tidbit in the tree retrieving the blade that hit it. Rinoa throws her willpower with Blizzara and watches the storm and icicle swirl around the rexaur's head, confusing it and causing nearly instant frostbite to its flesh. The rexaur thrashes its tail into the tree, nearly knocking Rinoa out of it. She scowls and shoots it in the face, the frostbite disallowing its blood to flow out correctly, and causing it to be blind. Rinoa loses patience and hops to the ground, breaking into a run before the rexaur loses its blindness. Tonight she's angry and she doesn't know why. Even the amount of creatures she's downed in here doesn't burn off her steam. She jogs out of the training center, brushing herself off, and turns for her dorm hall, glaring at the floor all the way. She hasn't seen Squall all day and she misses him- whatever is pissing her off right now could probably be instantly dissipated by his appearance, but she knows he's been busy with paperwork and commander stuff, so she knows better than to expect him at her every beck and call.-

Sitting back in the entrance hall of the dormitory area, Squall dully banged his head against the wall he was leaning against, his eyes shut, head turned toward the ceiling.

"Maybe I should take Rinoa on a vacation, to show her I care. But where could we go? It's not like there are any amusement parks on Balamb... Dollet's not good for much besides gambling, and I'm no good at that."

He sighed slowly and placed his forehead against his left knee.

-She unstraps the Rising Sun from her arm and takes deep breaths, calming herself down so that she won't be angry around Angelo when she walks into her dorm. As she turns the corner to the entrance hall of the dorms, she sees Squall on the floor and immediately panics. She runs toward him, her eyes glittering with what could be tears or just worry.-

Squall! Squall, why are you on the floor? Are you okay? Please tell me you're okay!

Squall looked up at the sound of his angel's voice, and smiled, then pushed himself to his feet and stood up, then waved off her worry with one hand.

No, I'm fine. I was just thinking.

If a Grat comes out to my left, I'll do a running jump-kick...followed by a backhand with my left fist...and if one comes out to my right...I'll give it a brutal uppercut and focus on hooking its head so it won't put me to sleep... There seemed to be no moment in time when Delan wasn't thinking about fighting techniques. Even then as she slinked through the Training Centre did the nightmare-haired teenager plot on how to beat the beasts that frequented the center, her straight tresses brushing against her face without notice. She had removed her wraps upon entering the area, her gloves firmly around her hands. Stopping near a fallen tree to study her surroundings, Delan was getting annoyed that no fiend had attacked her yet. This was what, her fourth time through the facility? And still there was no monsters prowling around?

I know it's night, but they can't all be sleeping, could they? Delan asked herself mentally, straightening up but still having her fists in front of her for protection. It was getting ridiculous, waiting as long as she was, and the eton blue-eyed female was seriously considering drawing in for the night. This is too weird... Where the hell are they? Even a T-Rexaur would get agitated with the shortage of its food!

Suddenly yawning, Delan went to cover her mouth, realizing that she had just about walked herself out. Since she was pretty close to the entrance, she decided to wait for a few minutes until something would come and try to get her off of its territory.

-She drops to her knees, thrusting her face directly into Squall's line of sight, resisting the temptation to throw her arms about his neck and give him a kiss for suddenly cheering her up.-

Are you sure? You don't look too hot. Do you need to lie down?

-She frowns slightly and runs her hand through your hair, brushing it out of your face.-

Haiiro wakes up after a long rest... he dresses and makes his way to the armory...

He shook his head again and threaded his gloved fingers through hers.

I'm okay. I was just thinking about some of the letters that I was lucky to not have to write home. I'm fine.

(EDIT: mad -almost said the armory was closed at night, then remembered that it wasn't lights out yet-)

There was a sign hanging on Irvine's door.

The same sing was on Raven's door. It had been there for a few years...

-She squeezes his hand, but her brow furrows. Letters? To home? She decides not to ask, but remembers that she has to write Daddy a note soon or he'll holler.-

Let's make you forget the letters you're worrying about, okay? Come to my room with me.

-A sly grin crosses her face as she waits for Squall to splutter or blush so she can laugh and say just kidding.-

(you know... the "Dear Sir or Madam" letters... i hope it was just Rinoa's ignorance.. sweatdrop )

He blinked and stared up at Rinoa, the faintest red tinge appearing on his face. For someone not as familiar with him as she is, it wouldn't even have been noticed.

Ga-Garden regulations... Can't... Uhh... stare

(It was, I know. razz )

-She bursts into giggles, as she does every time. Squall is SO much fun to tease.-

You know I was joshing you. Let's take a walk to the balcony.

-She stands up and holds out her hand to him, smiling.-

( smile )

He attempted to glare at Rinoa in annoyance, but it would probably just make her laugh more. So he pushed himself up to his feet and took her hand, walking along with her back toward the ballroom, and the balcony there.

(and yes, even though i never mentioned it, Squall is back in his regular clothes. 3nodding

EDIT: and Rik, i'ma go at about 2 so's i dun get in trouble)
