159... 160... 161... 162... His calves were screaming, even if he couldn't. This was ridiculous, this was tedious, and no matter how much he mimed for Roar to carry him, the burly howler-human refused to give him a piggy back ride.

As she continued to walk, Moriko flashed back to memories of her old life. Memories from a time before all of the fighting and this mysterious voice. In particular she flashed back to when she first met sigrun in the woods. How many years had that been now? She certainly couldn't have ever imagined just how good of friends they would become back then. Well, that certainly didn't take long. Before he knew it, Maple had darted off again. The stairs were twice as much as the previous, but how many floors was still an unknown. There could be just one more or there could be hundreds, but he doubted that it had that many plus multiples of these amounts of stairs per floor based on what he saw outside. Uru only managed to take six more steps before he felt a pain in his side again. Perhaps he shouldn't push himself too much... [[ 43+6 = 49 ]]

Roar, meanwhile, was growing irritated. He appreciated being able to move about on his own, he really did. The whole adventure had been fascinating, entertaining, if a bit nerve wracking at various parts... but the stairs. Far too many stares. Even giving Jerry the occasional kick didn't make it go faster.

The Voice spoke again. Sherry felt tired herself. But she wasn't about to give up. she simply shook her head at the voice, and pressed forward. She wasn't certain she'd gain anything by continuing. She knew disappointment awaited her below, but above...only one way to find out. So she continued on. Sacrifice, sacrifice. You sure like sacrifice. Her mouths moved to say the words, and her voice cracked and she barely made a hiss, whimpering as she clutched both hands over her throat and looked around with a desperately panicked look on her face.
That worry beat down on her more and more. She should have been climbing back down the tower. She needed to finish her altercation with Thackery - their altercation. What if because they'd come here he never woke up again?
Her insides knotted.

As she climbed, she pictured a cabin in the woods, smoke rising from the chimney. She had been able to smell a fresh kill on the fire. What had it been? She wanted to say rabbit but it may have been something else. She could remember how hungry she had been. Moriko had just finished up an assignment and new work had been hard to come by. Trying to save as much money as she could she'd wandered into the woods to try to catch herself a bit of dinner. She hadn't ever been fond of strangers or company in general, but the smell of those rabbits and how welcoming Sigrun had been was more than she could resist. The voice was telling her something she knew wasn't true at all: That she was a fragment of its imagination. That she was created. You would truly be a kitsune of the higher caliber if you could create this much out of nothing and it gain my sentience. But you are not. She had to keep speaking in her head.
To remind herself she did know what sound was. That she did have her own sentience - she didn't speak, therefore she was. She wouldn't let the voice take her away from herself.
