Quest: Appraisal
A secret quest!? Cthaer had just been reading through the tooltip for hide when he was alerted about another quest. The Ranger told him about a special skill that Cthaer could learn. Now this was interesting. He was rapt, and he listened intently to the Ranger's instructions. He was given the task of examining a monster, and reporting back with the information he'd gathered. Stalking into the undergrowth, Cthaer approached a boar that was on its own. He activated the temporary skill he'd been given as a placeholder, and his eyes began to glow purple as he studied the boar. Numbers and symbols appeared in his HUD, and he was able to evaluate the boar's movements and behavior to determine its weaknesses. He zoomed in and noticed that its rear left leg was stepping more lightly than its others. A potential sign of damage. Closer inspection as it turned away from him revealed a deep scar on the leg, and the bone may not have knit correctly. Another insight appeared as it highlighted the thick bone plate of its shoulder, which would protect the organs that rode low in its chest. He could see its freaking organ placement. Several points were highlighted as he watched, and when the skill timer ran out the metadata disappeared, but those highlighted points remained. Targets for maximum damage. Cthaer had found his new favorite skill. To think that something like this exists... It was a game changer for someone like him. A sneak attack on a critical target would be devastating, and from now on, that's what he would be aiming for. Returning to the Ranger, he relayed the information that he'd learned, and what he'd noticed.

He tried to move as quietly as possible through the trees, watching his feet carefully and keeping an eye on the isolated boar that he had chosen as his prey. He needed to get close enough to get a blade in it, and that was going to be difficult without the Ranger's help. These animals weren't stupid: they knew that there were threats out to get them in these woods. The boars were probably most aware of this, since they were a staple of the encampment's dietary practices. He crouched down low as the boar turned its head toward him, his breath catching in his throat. He noticed that his skin was somewhat transparent as he blended into his surroundings, fading into the shadows. Now that was cool. His toothy grin gleamed in the darkness as he activated scan and his eyes shifted from yellow to purple, watching the boar and checking to spot weak spots in its anatomy. He was getting a lot of the information he'd gathered last time, about organ placement and strong points. Some of the weak points were even in the same places, but others had shifted their locations, and new points of purple light were showing on the animal's hide. Cthaer's eyes faded back to yellow, and his skill went into cooldown. All that was left was to make his move. He aimed for a highlighted point in the underside of the boar's front leg. It'd be a hard target, but if Cthaer could hit it, he'd be driving his poisoned blade directly into the animal's heart and lungs. Carefully, he extracted Illfang from his sash, and kept his yellow eyes trained on the boar's movements, waiting for it to get close enough that he could get his shot at it. He was going to have to go all out on this attack if he wanted to down the animal quickly. He could worry about what happened if he didn't get a clean kill later. It was a bit of an awkward angle, but he mostly managed to land on his target, striking very near the purple circle that glowed on the boar's chest. The boar bucked its head and its tusk bit into Cthaer's arm, cutting him deep, but not dangerously so. The shade rolled away from the animal, keeping his dagger in a reverse grip and his knees bent so that he could be light on his feet. He had committed too completely to the attack, hoping for a straight kill. It seemed that that was just not on the menu for his current skill level. He felt that that attack would have ended a spider, though, and that spoke to his legendary blade's potential. It was truly a dangerous weapon. It would become even more deadly soon enough. He darted forward, "Where are you going? You're going to miss the show!" He leaped forward and buried his dagger in the boar's neck, allowing it to drag him beside it as he ground his feet into the dirt. Soon, the boar had fallen face first into the earth, and it was dead. Cthaer grinned his razor sharp grin and pulled his blade from the corpse, allowing it to decompose into a cloud of red shards. Well, that had gone better than one might have expected. His first combat, and he'd killed a boar in two attacks. This was going to get good. Cthaer was finally able to take the Alchemist's quest, and he did so with relish. She needed him to kill some spiders to get their venom. He was definitely up to that task. Armed with equipment that rendered him immune to poison, and a dagger that could probably kill spiders on sight, he moved toward the Gloomweave Cave, picking his target out as an isolated spider. He crouched down low and moved in silence to a more advantageous position, keeping his eyes locked on his target. He was going to get better at this, he just needed practice. His steps light on the foliage underfoot, he crept toward the soon-to-be-dead spider, trying to find a good position to settle into.

Now that his hiding place was firmly selected, Cthaer activated detective mode and scanned the spider. It had some interesting anatomical features, and he was interested in burying his dagger into the creature's weakpoints. Alyx didn't have to worry about this stuff. He just looked at spiders, and they died. Cthaer would have to be a little more patient. Besides, he would only get better at hide and scan if he practiced. So practice he would. All he would need is a little extra time to kill each mob, and he would be golden. Murdering low-level monsters was a cakewalk, but he'd need these fundamentals in order to get to the point that he could safely challenge stronger mobs.

His eyes were finished doing their work, and they transitioned back to yellow. The shining points on the spider were clearly visible, and he took aim for one that was at the base of the spider's head. He'd drive Illfang into that spot, and the fight should be over. He wasn't going to overreach this time, though. He'd keep his feet under him and stay mobile so that he might avoid taking the hit on the chin like he had before. He had to remember that he was not Alyx. He was not able to take hits like that for very long. Even when Alyx was young, he hadn't been able to contend with too much damage too soon. Cthaer would eventually be able to avoid damage entirely, but he'd have to take his time and practice. Patience was the name of the game. Darting forward, he jumped and turned in the air, sending his legs higher than his body as he vaulted the spider, driving his legendary dagger toward the shining point of light that was his primary target.

Cthaer's dagger bit home, and the spider sank to the ground without making a single move. It might not even have known that Cthaer had been there. He'd killed it so fast that it probably had no idea it was in the middle of combat. That was a result that he could get behind. That made it worth all the preparation for the sneak attack. Killing his target before it could even begin to think about counterattacking was the sort of rush he was looking for. Since he was most likely going to have to be on his own anyway, he'd be able to survive longer if he managed to take his enemies out of the fight before they could retaliate. Honestly, against some mobs, he felt like that might be the only way he'd be able to survive.

Cthaer realized that while he wanted to begin his life as an alchemist, he really didn't have the materials that he needed for that particular endeavor. He was primarily excited about making poisons, and he couldn't do that without gloomweave fangs, apparently. He decided that he'd go finish his first hunt quest, and maybe bob and weave while he was at it, and use that as an opportunity to gather some supplies. He really wanted to try and conserve spider fangs, if he could, though. He needed those for upgrading Illfang. Sure, they may not be the same quality as his legendary dagger, since they weren't from as powerful a creature, but he figured that if they distilled enough of that power into a single blade, they might be able to milk enough poison out of it to make a real difference in his performance. He crouched down into the bushes, waiting for a target to venture across his path.

There. That was the one. Cthaer kept his gaze locked on the creature and narrowed his eyes as they changed color to purple. He searched over its body for a flaw. Any weakness in its carapace or any way to gain an edge over it would get him the real advantage to take it down without having to worry about getting hurt. At this point in his development, he wasn't willing to take too much damage, since he had neither the armor nor the hit points to shrug off a hit of any real caliber. Also, it was just so damned satisfying to bury his dagger in something and feel it immediately go limp. All of that on top of the poison damage, which was, by his best calculation, approximately ten times the output of Alyx' Spider's Fang. At the very least, it was over five times the damage that that weapon had dealt. Not that he wanted to rely on that damage. He wanted to be a deadly force without necessarily having to use the poison. Having it there as a backup was a fantastic boon, though.

Damn. He lost his perception before he could find a weakness in the spider's defense, but at least he was still hidden. He had the advantage of height, though, since the spider had wandered into a small dip in the terrain, just below the foliage that was concealing Cthaer. He would take an environmental advantage instead of a anatomical one, if he wasn't going to get the both of them. Either way, really. Every road ended with his knife in something, and wasn't that really what everyone was working toward? The shade grinned as his shadowy hand gripped the hilt of Illfang and drew it quietly from his sash. He kept his feral eyes on target, and coiled his muscles, ready to spring.

Name: That's Not a Knife Questgiver: Weaponsmith Prerequisites: None Objectives: 1 post to produce a skinning knife Rewards: 1 skinning knife
Anna-Mia awoke in a village she had never seen before. She remembered her and Rota walking, then a flash of white happened, someone talked to her, and then she was here. Why couldn't she remember more? one of the villagers came up to her and told her that she had a package waiting for her, a prospect that was very confusing to the small girl. She followed them and reached a mailbox. Inside were a few individually wrapped gifts for her all marked 'from Rota'. Her big brother was HERE! She ripped open the items as fast as she could, taking the bait, putting on the ring, and putting away the crystal hearts. Her brother had also enclosed a bunch of something she assumed was money and a set of instructions on how to get herself started. Her eyes shone with determination as she walked to the weaponsmith's hut and began making herself a skinning knife at their behest. Following Rota's instructions, she carefully selected a shard of scrap metal and began to wind cording around it for grip. Using a Whet Stone she sharpened it up and showed it to the weapons master. She had goals that needed to be achieved. Her family was waiting for her here...at least that's what Rota had told her...

Name: Rampaging Rabbits! Questgiver: Beastmaster Prerequisites: None Objectives: spend 1 post spreading bait for the rabbits to put them back in their pen. Rewards:+1 Beastmaster
Anna-Mia had made a skinning knife...not that she enjoyed the prospect of having to use it eventually. Survival was necessary and all that but she still didn't like the idea of killing animals. They were friends, companions. Anna knew that there were creatures out there that couldn't be befriended, or refused to, but she hated giving up on things easily. In any case she continued following Her Big Brother's instructions, guiding her to the eccentric beast master's pens. Her arms instinctively curled up and she let a high pitch squeal of glee. "BUNNIES!!!" She loved watching them bounce around carefree, nibbling on blades of grass and the like. Taking some bait in her hands she held them out to the Rabbits and they bounced tentatively towards her, her smiling the whole time. When the bravest rabbit had fed, the rest began congregating in a horde around her, and each got their turn to feed. Giggling brightly, she chastised the Rabbits. "Naughty Bunnies, it's not playtime right now. You need to go back into your pens please." She exuded such an air of peace that the Rabbits listened to her dutifully, heading back to their pens one by one by one. The first brave rabbit was the last to leave, and with Anna smiling she petted the rabbit and placed it back in its pen. "I'm sorry bunny, you have to go back in your pen. Maybe we'll play together some time!" She stood up and looked at the beast master, feeling good about helping the man.
