snubsnub Vajra B. Hairava GENERAL POST D'INFORMATION FOR JAPANESE SELF-LEARNERS Classes aren't all that great. Japanese teachers, at least the actual Japanese ones, tend to be a bit wacko. Japanese teacher college does something to them, and they come out the other end really messed up. Books and the internet can do a better job than classes can. For example, this is just about everything you need to know. 95% of the grammar you'll encounter in normal situations is in that. The main challenge will be the practicing using it, especially if you are socially stupid and/or are not around many Japanese people anyway, like me. Classes wouldn't really solve the problem either, since you would just be talking to fellow non-Japanese speakers, and because the strict nature of the average Japanese class, theres little wiggle room for free conversation. Also, I reccomend this book. Its all in romanized Japanese so you won't learn anything about actual written Japanese (get a kanji book or something for that), but its good in all other aspects. Also, you want the CD's too. This book also really good. Thats basically the kinda stuff I've been using so far, and it works just fine or better than classes in most cases. And of course, if you really wanna get good at Japanese, go to t3h Japan. But for decent competency thats as close to fluent as you can be without living there, that sort of stuff does the trick. Also, watching random youtube videos in Japanese is good. This guy is good for some fairly easy listening practice, and theres plenty of weird Japanese gameshows and crap, such as hard gay, that can be hilarious and ejumacational. Though you'll have to get to a decent intermediate level before you can understand most of the youtube stuff. Its still good to listen and get familiar with the pronunciation and all that though. So go forth and learn. Yeah, that's really helpful 3nodding but i'm just the kinda person that needs to be in a classroom and have a teacher to teach me something cause I have trouble teaching myself things XD

I met a Japanese woman at a party today. She said she could help me with Japanese, but it was so loud that I could only ask her for readings to kanji. xp She lives all the way up in Kenosha, Wisconsin so I doubt I'll be able to see her again. She also gave me some kanji for my name. 3nodding 樹利香

I was thinking about taking Japanese Classes in a community college nearby. My biological dad even agreed to pay half with me so I could do it, but my darn step dad is threatening me with my trip to England this Summer. O_o
-Is going to England w/ Grandma and Granddad to visit Relatives-
So yeah, If I decide to take Japanese Lessons my step dad is going to cancel my trip to England. >_>

Just wondering if you guys would like a little translation challenge?
Came across this blog thing, and I tried to see if I could make out any of it, after reading a thread about a person understanding Chinese when they spoke/wrote Japanese natively. After reading it a while, I sorta wanted to know what the thing was actually saying. I'm guessing the thing is about China/Kanji; the title of the entry is 平仮名とカタカナと漢字と。日本語と中国語, which I hope I'm correct in saying means "Hiragana and Katakana and Kanji. Japanese and Chinese."
The blue is me trying to guess what it means. I did learn a bit of Japanese before, but it really doesn't help that much generally, but just so you know.
みなさんは何が好きですか？ What does everyone like?
って意識している方は少なそうですが。。。
その前に質問の意味が伝わってなかったり。。。
言いたいことは、
私は”ひらがな”が好きです。I like hiragana
だから？アホっぽい文章になりがちです。Why? The writing is [pretty? easy?]
でも好きなんですね。[something about liking something]
文章が優しい感じになりますよね。[something about how the writer feels about the writing? It's nice?]
ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字、ローマ字、英語と日本人はかなり使いこなします。[I just recognised Hiragana, katakana, kanji, romaji, english and Japanese people]
他の国の人にはこういう文化／習慣というか文字はあるのかな？[people from other countries.... culture/customs (or habits) something about writing systems and kana]
中国語も素敵なのですが、chinese (language) something
漢字ばっかりってなにか something to do with kanji
”圧迫される感”ってないですか？something to do with feelings?

特に繁体字（香港とか台湾とかで見る難しい漢字。広＝廣 みたいな）。mentioning peculiar kanji, mentioning taiwan and hong kong using trad. (difficult characters?) and then giving an example of shinjitai vs kyuujitai
簡体字はまだましですが、繁体字は画数が多いですからねー！something to do with trad/simp. Trad has more strokes?
でも簡体字でも結局は漢字の羅列なので・・・圧迫されるんですよね。 but simplified characters....
英語やラテン語派生系のアルファベットもすごくカッコいいのですが、english and latin use the latin alphabet and something else
それだけ書いてあるとなんか読むの疲れるし、長いとイヤになっちゃいますよね。something about reading and writing?
タイ語とかアラビア語とかハングルとか・・・僕には理解不能なので放置。mentions thai and arabic [and their scripts?] The person says they can't understand it I think

どうこう言う特別なデザインセンスも持ち合わせていませんが、dezainsensu? design sense? o.0 something about a distinctive design of something?

I also suspect the person who wrote this isn't Japanese, since it's kinda weird to have a native go on about how much they like Hiragana I think. Unless I misinterpreted it, or it's a normal thing to do that in Japan or something...

Didn't do so great, but here's my shot:

言いたいことは、What I want to say is,
私は”ひらがな”が好きです。I like hiragana
だから？アホっぽい文章になりがちです。Why though? I mean, It makes sentence structure appear foolish.
でも好きなんですね。But, I still like it.
文章が優しい感じになりますよね。I feel it gives sentence structure an easy flow.
ひらがな、カタカナ、漢字、ローマ字、英語と日本人はかなり使いこなします。 Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, Romaji, and English broken about and used considerably in the Japanese language
他の国の人にはこういう文化／習慣というか文字はあるのかな？ I wonder if there are other countries who have this characteristic (lit: custom, habit, manner) as well.

Here's the bottom of an alley in Hong Kong. There are a lot of traditional characters...
特に繁体字（香港とか台湾とかで見る難しい漢字。広＝廣 みたいな）。 Traditional characters are especially hard to see. (Such as the words "Hong Kong" and "Taiwan".) It looks like 広＝廣.
簡体字はまだましですが、繁体字は画数が多いですからねー！Simplified characters even fool you and, there's a ton of stroke counts!
でも簡体字でも結局は漢字の羅列なので・・・圧迫されるんですよね。
So even if it's still "simplified", it's still numerous in Kanji... It makes you feel a sense of intimidation (lit: pressure, opression.)

I need to teach at least my dad some Japanese. I don't know how quick he can learn, except that it's very slowly. (My mom and I were born with language talents. 3nodding ) I really just need to know where to start teaching and everything else should fall in place. He also needs to learn as much as possible before August. That's when we'll be going to Okinawa and even then, there's no guarantee that all of us are going, so I might not be able to translate for him. That's why he needs to know too.

Yep, learning kanji,memorizing them, is the most difficult part in learning Japanese, the grammar is not that difficult. Like my teacher always say, 'practice and practice'... so, 頑張ってね wink
