Mr. Crawley
Talent show? IC? Exactly what kind of talents will be displayed? Touching your tongue to your nose? Because that's probably the only thing everyone's characters can't do. Otherwise it sounds like it'll end up as a "make s**t up" fest.

These contests you guys are talking about. Exactly how will they take place? How would a winner be decided in a contest like.. stone throwing or egg balancing.. or .. arm wrestling or whatever you guys are talking about.

Idolwise
We would perform by RP and then having judging based on creativity, originality, execution, etc...

I'd have to say that Idol wins in the suggestion department, since he included a suggestion in how to deal with it all.

Talent show? Obstacle course? Whatever else that isn't direct physical competition (like arm wrestling) could easily be taken care of with a panel of judges scoring people on the quality of their submission.

For example, back in '03 I had a thread set up with an obstacle course. I'd sign people up to run it, each would write a big long post about how they went through, and then 2-3 judges would give them a score based on performance/creativity/hilarity/etc. and that would decide the winner.

I think something like that would work just fine for all those 'showcase your talent' competitions. But like I said, things like arm wrestling would have to be different... no idea how that would work in some fair system. It'd just have to be decided ahead of time unless people wanted to throw back and forth posts of "UUUUUNGH! I PUSH HARDER!"

Reikomang~
Musical entertainment.

Unless we're actually hearing it in some way OOC.... what's the point? Exactly what is the motivation to pay attention? If I want to read song lyrics I'll just... go read some song lyrics!

Lulu and X make real music. Enki's a real DJ.

Plus there's always choreography people can try to RP if they want to get some kicks/think people will get some kicks from reading it.

But yeah. It's pretty stupid to have people RP getting up on stage, and then follow it up with a post that says "AND THEN THERE WAS MUSIC."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 9:20 pm

Oh yeah. Idolwise wins because he was the only one who came up with a suggestion as to how it would work.

But honestly... and this is also something I didn't understand about HoH (but that is another arguement for another time)...

Judging something based on writing skills.. is only okay.. if the something is writing skills.

Jello if you or Kasuga enter every contest you would win!

There's no competition with a few people in here when it comes to writing skills. Barely anyone else has a chance. All it would take is one "elite" writer to be in whatever competition and then it's no contest.

So unless you guys are gonna weed out elites.. how will anyone win?

I'd think it would be pretty stupid if someone like... Hawkgrrrrrl's character and Reiko enter some kind of strength test.. and she won based on writing skills.

Yeah.

As best I can figure, though, things like that (competitions with a prize) would have to fall to some sort of judging panel throwing up the 0.0-10.0 cards. But it would have to be gaged heavily on creativity and entertainment value, as well as realism (in respect to the character's own limitations).

If Reiko and Kana enter a strength test and Reiko lifts a bus while singing the national anthem and wearing a cape, while Hawkgrrrrrl hoists a building off the ground and blows a kiss, Reiko'd win. Likewise, if Reiko does the same, but Hawkgrrrrrl writes this -great- post about how she couldn't get the weight an inch off the ground and failed miserably, who's to say she can't get the OOC prize for a great post even if Reiko wins IC for lifting the most weight?

...which kind of goes backwards since it may reward losing.

On that note, perhaps it would be better if the quality went hand in hand with actually accomplishing the task. An obstacle course would be easy. Lifting 200 lbs over your head would be possible for most characters, with varying difficulty that should be reflected in the post. Lifting a bus is something only a few people could do, so it'd be pretty wrong if people who can't did, or people who can didn't.

...hell. Complications.

Only thing I can say is that if everything is based entirely upon whether or not the character could do it, we'll end up with a pissing contest.

On a side note, I have no doubt that Kasuga and myself would be on that panel of judges, and thus intelligible.

So then we agree that it is not as simple as

"writing skills" because that doesn't give attention to the actual task at hand.

And I already stated in my other post that saying "I CAN!" is equally silly.

Assuming that every character can do everything asked of them, it'd boil down to how stylishly they can do it.

Which is writing skills.

When people are put into direct competition with each other, either it's going to be an "I CAN" pissing contest or someone's going to be ahead simply by virtue of realistic character design/talent/build/etc. Hulk wins the deadlift contest. Flash wins the footrace. That simple. But do we give out RPing prizes simply based on the fact that someone rolled higher on their alcohol tolerance? We'd have to factor in style points.

Which is writing skills.

I mean, sure, we could pull people's bios and compare them next to each other to TELL you who'd win in a contest of _______ ability... but that's boring.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 9:54 pm

And it's also stupid if someone enters

"lil kid" in a strength contest and they beat "BIG MAN!"

It's faulty. This is about IC roleplaying. "writing skills" creates a loophole rule for "elites" to win.

As a matter of fact... people should get their head checked out if they can put more than 5 lines of text into throwing a stone far. That isn't an example of writing prowess. No writer would put so much detail into such a simple straight forward task.

Or armwrestling someone.

Or eating a lot of pies. "I grabed the first pie. I mashed my face right into the center and began eating like a dog. Needless to say the stuff got on my hair.. and face and neck.. and I was a mess. Meanwhile I was eating."

I'm no J. K. Rowling or whatever the b***h's name is.. but c'mon.. it would be stupid.

I do not see how you think it's a legit base for judging.

---addendum.

It would turn into a "who has the longest post" contest.

And yous guys wouldn't realize it until it was too late.

Actually... I know this automatically earns a double backhand, but gaia throw in those Dice for a reason. THIS was that reason.

I've been an avid follower of D&D for some time now and if we add the dice, then everything would flow EASILY. SUCH AS: Drinking. Drinking is your characters consitution. A standard saving roll for drinking is 5 or 10, depending on the drink, thusly said person would roll the dice and whatever the roll was + CON would be how drunk they were getting. The lower BELOW the line they got, the faster they got drunk, the higher ABOVE the line is how easily they are handling alcohol.

Arm wrestling is a players strength +1d20 vs. the opposing players strength + 1d20

Now, I KNOW Reiko that you think this is a horrible idea, but I know that MOST of the people in this guild have given base stats to their characters. I have Enkis and Ravens actually ON a character sheet.

Such as, Enki would win in a drinking game because his con is pretty high, but in all actually, Enki is relatively weak compared to every other fighter here. He relies on his con and dex, mostly.

Again, I know you HATE this idea, but it's the only way it'd really work well and still be fun because the dice roll could also determine how the player would react to the situation. And, of course, natural 20 = auto win. Critical Miss = Auto Fail!

i believe most of those stats to be arbitrary. like... when sun was putting a spike pie chart on char pics, we put up some numbers on the spot. it was good fun, an general idea of "more mental power than physical, and kinda faster than your guy" but i'd rather have that rp'd than put to chance. i don't know how enki is with it, but i'd play lazenca like i drink my own... a couple of "hard" drinks, and sleep creeps up. i don't know what number "con" would get 'cause while i've played dice [rhy'din, where dice've seen my chars killed for chance bad rolls], i haven't played dnd at all.

if explained i can assign a number there, but i don't know if i want to just so i can put laz at a table against someone who'll probably drink him under it.

devil's advocate? not really.

CON is your characters Constitution which basically works for how well your character can take hits which is often reflected best in your HP as well as how well they can hold drinks, fight off poisons and things of that nature.

I do think we need to set something up BEFORE we start the festival and have a Point/Buy system where each character gets, oh, I dunno... 25 points which they can give to base stats such as Strength, Agility (dexterity), Constituation and things of that nature. That way they can think about their character, decide which stats they are best at and add points to it, then use a dice system against one another.

Like, naturally, Tomorrow is DEFINITELY going to be able to chuck a rock MUCH farther then Enki can., but Enki can move faster and with more agility then Tomorrow. Make sense?

Isn't Tomorrow some sort of lightning god?

Storywise, I doubt that you or anyone can move faster than him, except for Reiko.
