"You might be able to do that, Valient." Cy says, "but returning to my home is all but impossible for me. My banishment is as permanent as the scar I was given because of it. There's really only one chance for me to return, and that's if the leadership changes."

YOu think its much deferent for me, from what I remember they accused me of high treason or something along those lines so until that line of elven rulers either dies or they get rid of my father as an advisor I basicly screwed.

"Then how do you maintain hope?" Cy asks, "Honestly, I don't imagine either of those happening soon. Elves are very firm in their decisions and live longer than most other species put together."

I maintain hope to stop me from becoming like them. I refuse to be a mindless killing machine, who just lives for spilling blood. I keep hope so that someday when I'm older then the oldest dwarf from the clan I can go back there and tell their children of how I changed the way some elves think and how they view the world. Then I could retire and open up a little pub, sitting out the rest of my years comfortabley and peacefully.

"I hate to butt in here," the bard says, "but I must point out that you already kill with no definite purpose. Afterall, you were moments from spilling my blood without so much as a thought towards what I did to deserve death. Assuming this is similar to other missions you've taken, think how many people you've killed that may have done little more than steal a loaf of bread to feed their starving families."

I never said I liked the work I've done. Why do you think I never figure out anymore about the target then needed to catch him. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I consciencely knew that I was killing innocent people. It may be a poor excuse for what I do but its all I have.

"You're overlooking one of your options," the bard explains, "There is the possibility that you learn about your target and only kill those who you would kill for their crimes ordinarily. Blindly killing everything doesn't get you anywhere."
You notice that you're now coming upon the castle walls. The drawbridge is down, leading out onto a large courtyard filled with plant life. In the distance you can just make out two guards standing by the lone door at the end of the courtyard.

Well as a parting note to you, good bard, I'm thinking about quitting bounty hunting and take up a little bit less vile work after all seeing one of my bounties up close I don't think it's worth dealing with my conscience over a little spare gold

"I'm sure this was about a lot more than just gold," he responds, "afterall, if you were in it for gold, you'd be a rogue."
Cy and the bard walk across the courtyard, and you see the guards stop them for a moment.

Yeah your right. I stop in front of the courtyard and look for a good place to sit down.

You find a large, stone column about 2 feet high on each end of the drawbridge. It's likely used to house the hinges of the drawbridge, and appears to be the closest thing to a bench around.

I decide to sit down on the column. While I sit I try to keep to myself as much as possible.

I guess if that's all you want to do, I'll just do the DM equivalent of a musical montage.
After about 10 minutes, Cy and the bard walk back out of the courtyard. "Well, we've got some good news and some bad news." the bard explains, "the king says that there aren't enough mercenaries for him to let us go out and try to do anything yet. It seems we're the only ones who applied. Anyways, he's agreed to grant us a home in the castle until he finds some more mercenaries. We worked it out so that you can come, but you have to pose as a servant while you're there."

Sounds fine so far but who's servant will I be posing as? I ask as I look between the two of them. Not that it matters just would help out to know.
Yeah you see I didn't want to do anything around a place that doesn't like me at all because if I do I could jepordize everything.

"Both, actually," Cy says, "we're claiming to be an adventuring party, and you're a hireling that we found to carry all of our equipment. Until then, the king gave us these passes" Cy holds up a rectangular piece of wood with writing on it, "that let us go to almost any shop on his payroll. I'd like to run up as large of a bill as possible as revenge for what he's done to my people, but I've also heard that it's arena fighting season. That's always been one of my favorite sporting events."
