Quest: Shrooms
((Roll: 1d100+5=gathering
Novice Gatherer's Ring: +5 gathering))

He was down to one mushroom off of this node. That's fine. He'd gotten lucky with the first one, and had gotten a material that he was not familiar with already, which was much better than he'd done with Alyx, who'd gathered a few mushrooms and gotten nothing else whatsoever. He just had to stick in there, and he'd get to where he needed to be. The only thing that he was relatively sure of was that you could not get nothing from a harvesting node. If it was possible, he was sure that he would have already seen that happening. So perseverance was the key. And he had enough of that to go for days. This was almost certainly not going to take days to accomplish, of that he was confident.

Quest: Shrooms
((Roll: 1d100+5=gathering
Novice Gatherer's Ring: +5 gathering))

Well, that node had done it: he was officially done with the quest. So now he could stop... But did he have enough Red Harvest Tokens? Sure, he might have enough to get the gloves and the gathering ring, but he certainly didn't have enough for the skinning knife... Okay, let's turn this quest in, and then, while we're in town, get another two Red Harvest Rings, and then, wearing three of them, work on getting enough Tokens to buy two knives, the gloves, the gatherer's ring, and then use whatever is leftover for other stuff. Since he was swimming in snowflakes and candies on Alyx, he could spend his time leveling Cthaer to feed the Harvester. From the looks of things, the Harvester just wasn't getting as much attention as the other events. Cthaer would need a lot of supplies for his ultimate goals, and gathering/crafting was a good way to earn levels without risking death, so it was definitely preferable to losing the items that he'd sent over to Cthaer to get the shade started. He couldn't imagine losing this dagger in a million years.

Autumnal Ale: 10-1=9
+25% gathering

So he had three Red Harvest tokens and he'd gained a level. He was at the level he'd been when Alyx had started taking Boars, and he was arguably more prepared for that than Alyx had been, but he decided that it would be more efficient to gather some more in order to get the new skinning knife, and to collect some supplies for his eventual crafting endeavors. He had picked a little something up to help that plan along: an Autumnal Ale. Apparently it made harvesting even more effective, and if it was worth it, he'd be very likely to stock up on them for a long time in order to ensure the sustainability of his gathering fortunes. Heading back into the woods, he traveled closer to boar territory and threw the ale back, savoring the taste of the honey-laced beverage. He noted humorously that he was probably too young to drink, but he stopped caring when he felt a comfortable warmth spreading through his body. Oh, that's the stuff. He felt an easy sort of buzz, and when he looked around, the terrain was somewhat blurred, but not to the point that it was disorienting. There were several places where the earth was crystal clear, though, and each place that was sharp was a harvesting node. Well that's handy. He glided over to one of the nodes and pressed his fingers into the damp earth.

HOLY s**t what just happened? Cthaer dug his fingers into the earth and brilliant light shined from the node as he unearthed the Ark of the Covenant. He had just acquired materials that he'd never even heard of, and in numbers that were frankly probably unfair. He'd never seen so many materials come out of a single node. This was insane. Was this the Ale working? If so, he was damn sure going to become an alcoholic. This was exhilarating! It seemed like he was destined to become an alchemist. He looked over the items and tried to imagine what they were for. He had some ideas, but he wasn't entirely sure. He just supposed that he'd have to do some hands-on research. His ultimate goal was to increase survivability and damage output. He could get good at these things and then not only feed himself, but feed his potions to Alyx and Rota in order to help them dominate on the front lines. Cthaer, being a DPS without a tank, probably wasn't going to be a front line fighter. Alyx and Rota could be the trailblazers, and Cutter would probably follow in their paths, letting them take the heat while he reaped the benefits.

Autumnal Ale: 8-1=7

Another incredible haul! Cthaer was experiencing the greatest yield per harvest node that he'd ever experienced. He hadn't imagined that numbers like this were even possible, let alone attainable at level 2. This ale was incredible. He couldn't imagine what was going to happen when he was wearing a new ring and a good pair of gloves on top of being buzzed. He was normally not a strong proponent of alcohol, but how could you argue with results like this? He'd gathered more in a single node than he had from all the nodes he'd gathered during his quest, and now he had hit another node just as hard. This was absolutely amazing. He was as happy as an herbalist in a greenhouse. He felt like a single goldfish in a fifty gallon tank: the whole world was his. Even if he struck out for the rest of the session, he'd already amassed a respectable fortune in crafting components. Everything from this point on was gravy.

This was a slightly less excessive node, and was more on par with the payout he'd received from the first nodes he'd hit earlier, but it was still better than it could have been. He was getting an awesome amount of mushrooms, but he was also amassing a decent pile of gloomweb, which he was interested in knowing what he'd be able to do with. No matter what it was, at the very least it would be a material that someone needed, and thus it had value. Cthaer was probably going to focus mostly on his alchemy, but he might branch out into other crafting professions if it proved to be useful enough to do so. If the webs were used for anything good, he might start taking advantage of his ability to gather his own materials. He wasn't likely to start producing weapons, but armor wouldn't be entirely out of the question, which was his suspicion for their use, since he was himself wearing armor made from the silk of spiders.

And he was back into high yield nodes. This ale was an incredible gift. Harvesting was going to be loads of fun if this kept up. He was going to be wealthy if he continued to pick up this many supplies this quickly. His future as an alchemist would be ensured so long as he could keep this stock of supplies topped off. Any time he got low on supplies, he'd just toss another ale back and tear the Gloomwood apart to expose its riches. He wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty; he'd been doing that since he was a kid. Ninety percent of any job was preparation, and he had always prided himself on always being ready for what might come his way unexpectedly. Having a stock of antidote potions didn't seem like all that good a deal at first, since he was immune to poison in this armor, but he might trade up out of this armor eventually, and he'd be able to fix his newfound susceptibility to poisons with a simple potion. He was going to be very, very good at this. He grinned, baring his pointed teeth as he plunged back into the dirt.

That was to be expected. A small haul, but it was still a step in the right direction. He was about halfway through the cooldown on his ale, and he was already loaded with mats, so it wasn't like he was going to be upset that he'd not received another mountain of loot. Every climb had its lulls, and this was just a bump in the road to his ascension. He could take his success almost directly to the bank right now, if he had a mind to. But he would have more excessive success if he used these goods as an investment instead of as an end in themselves. As far as he could tell, alchemy was one of the unloved arts, and, because of that, he suspected that there was something that it was hiding. If you could collect spider venom, and use that venom to make antidotes, then surely you could use that venom to make poisons, right? it only made sense that you could do more than just heal people with alchemy.

Not the best node he'd ever found, but it was better than it could have been. He was still riding the high from the combined ale and overwhelming success of his recent gathering endeavors. He tried to order his thoughts. He would undoubtedly have enough Tokens to get what he needed after this, so he would be able to move forward with his plans. Getting that skinning knife and then getting the hunting skill, he'd be ready to take on the world. But he wasn't entirely sold on that just yet. There were still avenues to be explored. If he looked around, he was sure that he would come across skills that would come in handy. To begin, he was sure that the ranger would teach him something that might be usable. Map-making was bound to prove useful in the coming days. He'd be able to scout ahead and make maps to feed to Rota and Alyx to prevent another endless dungeon fiasco. After that, there wasn't anything stopping him from killing a boar, getting hunting, and then slaughtering his way through a horde of spiders.

He was on cloud nine. Another inhuman haul, almost tied with his first attempt. He had gathered infinitely more materials than he'd thought possible in this short a time, and it was a fantastic feeling. With this pool of resources, he was on track to become a master alchemist, if his luck followed him into that pursuit. He checked his timer again, and he was about two thirds of the way through his buff. No matter. It had more than paid for itself, especially with the addition of the Red Harvest Rings. He'd even gotten a level out of all this, so he was going to have a reasonably comfortable lead on the mobs that he was going to be focusing on. Taking these quests before starting combat is probably the best way to start the game, once you know what you're doing. They give you a really advantageous lead on things, as opposed to charging blindly into battle the way Alyx had. Sure, it had worked for him, but Cthaer was nervous that he might not be as hardy as a knight.

Good God this was disgustingly fantastic. Cthaer had more materials than he literally had any idea what to do with. A metric ton of mushrooms was the icing on an ambrosial cake made of webs, roots and weeds. Arguably not the most delicious confection in creation, but no one could deny its value. It was like a solid gold turd: it may not be the most attractive thing in the world, but if you were willing to look past that, you were still holding solid gold. Cthaer hoped fervently that this session was not an accident. If this was his luck every time that he went into the woods to gather, he was going to be on the leading edge of alchemy. If Rota had taught them anything it was that, with enough material, you could create legends through hard work and ingenuity. Cthaer was going to be legendary. He maybe had enough of a buzz to last one more harvesting node, so he stepped toward one after he'd gathered his large haul from his last node. Getting down on his knees, he combed his fingers through the dirt, the feeling of soft, damp earth squishing between his fingers warmly. It had a slightly grainy texture, but it was not unpleasant. It felt nice to be working with his hands. He'd always been sort of easy like that: the simpler things in life brought him some level of joy, and that probably influenced his decisions to play the way he did, even if he rather enjoyed combat as well. The metalworking artes seemed like they were more complicated and involved, while shaping wood and cooking were a little more relaxing. He was sure that alchemy was going to be fairly involved, but at least the rewards from that would be immediately helpful. He combed through the earth, bits of dirt falling from his almost completely blackened fingers, stained with wet soil.

Autumnal Ale: expired

Well, that was that. The world returned to lucidity and he was left with a parting gift of a single paltry mushroom. No matter. He'd more than earned his money back on this investment, and he was contented with the burgeoning pouches of his pack. He wasn't entirely sure what all of these materials were good for, but he had absolutely no doubt in his mind that they would be useful, if not to himself than to someone. If alchemy didn't use these materials, though, Cthaer would be utterly surprised, and slightly disappointed. He was good at this. Very good, apparently. He had a lot of fun doing it, so he hoped that he would actually have a use for the skill later. This did mean, though, that between Rota, Alyx, and himself, that they had the harvesting skills mostly covered, if you didn't count hunting, which was really only increased through combat it seemed. He smiled and began to head a back to the encampment to talk to the Ranger.

Quest: Field Reconnaissance

Cthaer listened to the Ranger's quest prompt and followed the man, hoping to glean enough information that he could be of some use in mapping out things that would be useful. Dungeons came to mind. If he could map out the quickest path to the boss room, he could name his price on those instructions, but he had the feeling that he'd share it with Alyx and Rota just in the name of gratitude for their help in getting him started. Without their work, Cthaer would never have had this fantastic start that he'd gotten. It was an ubelievable boon to have gotten a legendary dagger and this special equipment at such a low level. He was going to be able to parlay that advantage into becoming a self-sufficient --or at least mostly self-sufficient-- player that had something to offer to the game. undoubtedly, potions would come in handy later, and the rookie healing potions were not going to cut it at the higher levels. Cthaer watched carefully the Ranger as he outline the finer points of creating maps and different methods of keeping track of the native animal population and terrain, as well as the availability of resources, and how to recognize animal paths and markings, which Cthaer had never noticed before. He was actually learning a lot from this tutorial, which was refreshing from thinking that he had had everything in the game figured out.

Quest: Stalking

Cthaer was already familiar with sneaking in cities, but he imagined that creeping through the woods was a different animal entirely. He was right. He was not as stealthy as the Ranger, but he tried his best, carefully choosing his foot placement to minimize noise and ensure stable footing, and keeping himself low to the ground to silently glide through the foliage unseen. He would need a lot of practice, but he was beginning to get the hang of it as the Ranger led him on a tutorial run through the woods, picking their careful paths through the enemy aggro ranges, and stopping to silently wait as some animal or another walked past them, sometimes just an arm's reach away. He could have reached out and slit their throats, but he didn't want to fail the quest and have to repeat it. It was a rather slow pace that they'd been moving, and Cthaer was not anxious to repeat it all without the benefit of getting his quest rewards beforehand. Finally, they'd reached the end of the tutorial, and he got his notification that the quest was complete.
