The voice broke through her ears again, desperate and promising.
...It could make her a King? Rebuild a world around her? Give her everything she ever wanted? The pull was promising, even she had to acknowledge that. A world of power, where she wasn't weak or unsure, where there wasn't any form of constant suffering. A perfect world, she could finally have it---
NO, a part of her screamed. No, don't think that way. This place was wrong, this voice was wrong. All that mattered to her right now was getting closer to the top, she knew it. She had to follow.

It did not take the boy to catch up to her as he bounded over the last few steps, an expression of discomfort and anger displayed upon his face. The pain on his sides were hurting, the cuts felt like they were opening, but it didn't matter. The Voice is what bothered him. Whoever at the top better tell him where that thing was. Or at least someone to take it out on. He spotted Maple waiting for him on the next floor. As he crossed the threshold he felt a strange sensation. "Maple, what's the mat-" No sound. No vibration. He had no voice, even when he spoke on the previous floor, his throat vibrated accordingly, but no one could hear. But this floor... this one they could not speak. The concern disappeared, and then a smile. Suppose this is not dangerous at all if they cannot hear. Nodding to himself, he looked to the former shadow and nodding to her too. They needed to get to the top.

The Voice called to Ofelia again as she made her way up the steps. It told her there was nothing but disappointment ahead, that once again it was only seeking the true king.
Ofelia wanted to tell the Voice to shut up, she didn't need to be told things she was already aware of. Seeking a True King, being disappointed - that was life.

All he wanted was to get to the top. To The Voice. So the one looking for the true king. He had no idea who that was, but he hoped the voice found him soon. Ofelia could see the top floor, could see the exit. She was but a few steps away with the words of the Voice still echoing in her ears.
Disappointment or no, she was going to see this through. It was her duty, or something.

Another door, another sign. It was far too late to stop, not that Sherry would have if she thought she could. She needed to reach the end. She knew that. So, she pressed on. The silence was sill distracting, but the lack of speech...she was strangely ok with that. Something seemed strange here, and she felt...tired. That might not have been the right word, but it was close enough. Disappointment was her bread and butter, Voice.
The exhaustion was setting in, the creeping resentment from both parties starting to weigh on her. What did she gain? That was a good question; she didn't care what she gained, all she wanted to do was get Aymet, to do as she was meant to and save him.
