Take me...there?
While Maximos got occupied with his own thoughts, the Half-Siren watched him with a quite baffled expression on her face. Of course she knew this man wasn't born on Gaia, that Aria was the world of his origin. But somehow... Even though she was used to see and hear about extraordinary things, unbelievable phenomenons, even though she had witnessed all kind of mind-stretching stuff - the thought of a whole world existing next to this one was something she'd always had her problems with.
It made her grin when she found it was easier for her to think of Maximos travelling heaven and hell than him coming from a parallel world. Lucind tried to bring together what little bit of information about his homecountry she'd been given by him in the past. That he apparently felt the same, that he wanted to share his memories, his life...it made her feel pleasantly warm and turned the grin into a serene smile. The Shadow Lands... What would they be like? And from there the question about his powers occured to her.
Soft laughter filled the library when she watched the shadows 'talking' to her. "I see, I see." After the last chuckle had ebbed away, she closed her eyes, looking completely relaxed.
Lucind listened to his breathing. And, fading out the sounds coming from the cafe, she could even hear his heart beating. Close. So close.
If Maximos didn't ask or mention something new, she would stay like this, managing not to think of something in particular, just concentrating on his presence and nearly dozing off - maybe she really would for a moment - until she would check her watch to see that it was five to six and that the first customers could come walking upstairs any moment, headed for the restaurant area on the third floor.
"What would you like to have? Maybe we've got something that closely matches your favourite food."

"I see, I see."
Maximos gave her a big nod. Because he was going to make it happen. He didnt know how he would bend the laws of space time and bring her to his home where even he hadnt been able to return to but...he would do it. He already had half of their tour planned out in his mind.
He found a simple pleasure in watching her so calm, it made him feel like he could for a moment let the weight off his shoulders. The look of a soul as beautiful as Lucinds in rest, and in slumber was something to see. The way the colors gently washed against each other like waves drifting into shore, it was breathtaking. He wouldnt dream of waking her, not even for the world. There was just no reason to think right now, serenity was a rare thing and when it truly came it was an exquisite pleasure to embrace it. And thats exactly what he did.
When she awoke she would find him gently smiling down at her. And after she questioned him, his head somewhat cocked to the side.
Its been so long since I could fully taste something I...
He pause in mid sentence, reaching up to tap his chin.
I...dont think I have a favorite...you could surprise me!

Lucind nearly blushed.
"Ah, stupid me..." She was sorry for asking something like this: for a moment she had really forgotten about Maximos old state as a 'full' shadow, where eating and drinking just meant holding on to a life he had left behind ages ago, where he still had a body made of bones and flesh.
Thus now, Lucind decided, she wouldn't serve him just one meal, but give him a variety of different tastes, bringing back to his memory what must've escaped his mind a long time ago.
"Well, I'll think of something," the woman grinned, already browsing the menu in her head.
"Alright, what about this." She sat up, stretching and stifling a yawn. "You could go upstairs and find us a table - there shouldn't be anybody yet so you've got a free choice. And I ambush our chef to get us something fine to eat. Deal?"
If he was okay with that, she would walk downstairs, choosing the spiral staircase in her room that led her down to the basement where the house's second, larger kitchen was located. After a while, she'd hurry back up into the other kitchen, behind the counter, that is.
About twenty minutes later, Lucind emerged from the elevator on the short side of the third floor, carrying a tray with a bottle of mineral water, a lightly cooled rosé of an exquisite vintage, plus two pairs of the respective glasses. Reaching whatever table would be theirs now, she chuckled: "Maybe I should've asked first what you'd like to drink. Are you okay with wine? I could bring something else, juice, coke, whatever." The woman smiled at him, putting down the tray.

Deal.
He said with a stout nod, he hovered a bit longer in the chair watching Lucind walk off. Then he stood up, letting out a pop or two from his back as he stretched, then gently laid his right hand on the bruised side of his neck and rolled his head around his shoulders setting free a few more pops.
He could smell the food form here, it smelled delicious just like...well he hadnt much of a basis for comparison here, but it did smell delicious. His mouth already began watering. He had better get a move on that table, without a moment of delay he made his way to the stairs and just as his right foot rested on the first step, he stopped. His head turned slightly to the side, taking in a very particular spot just in front of a very particular window, and bringing back a very good memory that was attached to it. He couldnt help, the goofy smile that slipped on his face, or the way his tongue peeked out and tasted his lips.
And then he was off, to the dining floor. He took a moment to scan over Lucinds lovely decorating choices before he chose a seat. There was a perfect one in the corner, with a great view out the window, and just a enough shade to be comfortable. And he waited, very patiently. His hand folded into each other, and his eyes lost as his mind wandered off yet again. Before he knew it, Lucind was back.
Wine is absolutely perfect, thank you!
Whats wine?...
Was the first thought to pop into his mind. Not being able to truly enjoy food, Maximos never really took the time to learn about its different flavors and types. But the bottle she held looked well prepared, aged, and classy, and with those things combined you simply couldnt go wrong.

She gave him a curious look, since his answer barely hid the confusion behind it.
"We just have to make sure you don't have too much alcohol - who knows how you take it after all this time heh..." Lucind grinned broadly, obviously glad to find herself distracted by something 'down-to-earth' like dealing with food. She knew that, after this dinner, she would've calmed down enough to be able to fill Maximos in on the latest events, about Azum and what the current situation was - without being overly depressed by recapitulating everything once again.
After taking out two sets of silverware and napkins from a nearby cupboard that stood in front of the banister, and depositing them on their table, the Half-Siren opened both water and wine and filled their glasses.
Lucind sat down and smiled softly at him. "To you, who went through heaven and hell and still came back," she said, not without winking a little while raising her wine glass.
One of the waitresses entered the restaurant area: Kara and Lucind had only hired her two weeks ago and both of them feared the girl wouldn't make it too long here. She was undoubtedly a very friendly person with a cute smile, which was framed by extremely long, auburn hair - now tamed as a one braid that dangled along her back. But Merice, that was her name, seemingly wasn't able to get hold of her nerves, and of course it got worse everytime the cafe or restaurant became crowded. And once you start thinking about what could go wrong, it happens every so often that you make exactly those mistakes.
Lucind walked over to her, asking if she was okay and how many reservations they had for tonight. Merice replied with her soft, humble voice and activated the cashpoint with a chipcard. The cashpoint stood on a high table which again was placed right next to the cupboard holding tableware, silverware, candles, notepads and all kind of stuff that was needed for this floor. Then the girl switched on a device looking pretty much like a PDA: on this way, the waitresses could forward the orders to one of the kitchens. Leaving Merice with some encouraging words, Lucind returned to Maximos.

Why? Is there something wrong with it?
He said with a honest curious gaze. The effects of alcohol were a mystery to him.
In truth, Maximos didnt know how it would effect him at all. Before a few weeks ago, the last time he had a real body he was eleven years old. And at that age the only alcohol he was allowed was the sort that was poured on his wounds after a day of training.
He didnt know that sort of thing was drinkable. As the crimson liquid caressed the inside of his glass he leaned forward just enough to steal a whiff of the stuff. It smelled wonderful! It had a sweet scent swirled exquisitely around a definite strong bite. He could only imagine how it tasted, but it had to be good. He love moments like this, situations in which he was completely able to drink in the normal and mundane existence he was robbed of. Something so simple as tasting wine was probably a normal everyday occurrence for most of the people, but for him it was a tiny adventure. Each moment of this renewed existence brought some new experience and chased away an old trouble.
And he could think of no one else he would rather share his first, formal dinner with than the woman across from him. Her toast brought a smile to his face, stretching from ear to ear. And he very formally bowed, and raised his glass to meet hers, with a gently "c***k". And a very smiley...
Thank you.
...Just before he brought the glass to his lips letting just a bit roll across his tongue. It stung, and yet it kissed away the slight burn with a soft, sweet, flavor. He loved it, and the tiny tingle that rode up the back of his neck as he gently swallowed. He set the glass down, giving Lucind a bright smile before she was called away.
He sympathized, that woman was certainly very shakey. Her soul trembled enough to bring her to her knees, it seemed only the very fear of falling kept her from doing just that. But Lucind, despite her troubles was able to give the girl the confidence to stand, to fight...deep inside, Maximos knew that feeling and the power of the half sirens words. She was truly an amazing woman, and as she came back to the table her met her with a smile, and a concerned question.
Is she going to be alright?

"...?" Lucind blinked.
She knew that Maximos had become a shadow when he'd been exactly the boy she'd seen vanishing at Death's side. And so, obviously, he must've forgotten many things, or never even got to know, to experience them.
Still...
"But, I mean...you dunno what it means when someone's drunk? You sure have seen someone after having too much alcohol: staggering around, bereft of his orientation and fine motor skills, all depending on how much he had.
Didn't you have alcohol on Aria? Like, the stuff only adults were allowed to drink?"
Lucind grinned inwardly. She really had to make sure Maximos wouldn't have more than a glass then. Although... No. Wrong image. She quickly took another sip of the rosé wine.
Sitting back down, she smiled a little helplessly and rose her brows. "Truth to be told, I don't think so. And I...I just can't figure out what it is. She's not one of the girls whose parents crush their kids with high expectations or by comparing them to their 'better', 'more intelligent' siblings. Maybe it was just one incident, something highly intimidating, bad enough to turn into a trauma. Or...she grew up being pampered and protected from everything around, and that's the reason why she's like that now." Lucind shrugged. "But I figured she's a genius when it comes to dealing with children, no matter how nasty they might be. So I guess I'll try and help her to find a job that's got something to do with kids in case she doesn't improve here - unless she wants to try out a completely different professional field."
In that moment, Lorenna came walking upstairs. The young woman with her thick reddish blonde hair and slightly oversized front teeth, who had already been part of the Feimurgan team back in the days when the shop was still located in the old stadium, was going to work in the restaurant area tonight, too.
Another twenty minutes after Lucind had brought their beverages, the same elevator Lucind had come out of opened again, and another employee, a man in a cook's outift emerged from it, rolling in a trolley with many small plates and bowls on it. He made his way over to Maximos and Lucind. "There you go. Hope you like it: all the stuff you asked for, plus a few experiments," he grinned at the woman, his boss.
The Half-Siren beamed at him. "Awesome, Bernard! Thank you very, very much. I owe you..."
"Ah, no no." He blushed and started to arrange all the plates on their table. "Was a good practice for me." "Enjoy your meal," Bernard wished and left.
"Alright then," Lucind started, looking more than a little excited. "I thought instead of serving you one meal, we could as well have small portions of several different dishes. Eh...I do hope your stomach won't curse me for having that idea.." She laughed.
"You can start with whatever you like. I can either explain you what it is before you taste it - or the other way round."
There were nearly ten plates:
Spaghettini with a garlic pesto, grilled king prawns and a chili pineapple chutney. Two small steaks, medium, with different coloured peppercorns. Rosemary potatoes. A salad of salted cucumber and pear with sesame. Mixed vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts - with sauce Hollandaise. Six different pieces of sushi. Basmati rice. Indian curry. Chicken breast with an orange-mint marinade.

All of those symptoms from one simple liquid? Maximos froze, holding his glass in place a few inches from his mouth, almost afraid to continue drinking it. He half believed it must be a magic potion of sorts to bring about such a drastic change, but it was all too familiar.
Oh yes! Aria had a substance like that, it was very popular in certain places in the big city. But we called it Menavena.
He said nodding in recognition, giving the glass an almost paranoid gaze, like it was going to attack when he wasnt looking.
...but it was strictly forbidden on our island. The elders said it dulled the senses and made us weaker.
Maximos paused, looking down at the glass. The pause lasting just long enough to make it seem like he was regretting the sip he had taken...
But...
...that was until a smile burst across his face, and he pulled the glass back in one gulp tossed back almost all the contents of the glass.
...I'm not on that island anymore!
Of course the sort of Ale they drank on Aria those many many years ago was far more potent and raw, simple sweet wine wouldnt have nearly the effect that substance did. Maximos was fine, just experiencing a few of the side of effects of the tiny wine bubbles.
He leaned forward, turning his eyes head just slightly to look at the young girl without looking too hard. And he nodded as Lucind filled in the blanks of the insecure image he saw.
I dont think she's spoiled...
He said, squinting just a bit.
...spoiled people arent usually good with children.
He turned to face Lucind with half a smile on his face, half because somehow it seemed wrong to be beaming with joy while discussing someones misfortune.
...something might have happened to her as a child...something to ruin her childhood, so she compensates by vicariously enjoying, and participating in others.
Or at least that was how he saw it, from what he was told and what he could see. He sort of nodded as his gave his prognosis. The fill the air was divine, it took all his gentlemanly restraint to keep from drooling. Before he knew it the food was being served. Alot of food! More food than a poor island boy who subsisted on fried, baked, and burnt fish, crab, and bird, even knew existed. Everything was covered in flavor, and the scents....dear lord, he had even smelled anything so vivaciously fulfilling before. It didnt smell like "meat" or "fish" it smelled of a mixture of tastes and textures blended together with some sort of masterful craftsmen ship he could barely fathom.
He regarded Bernard like a mere peon standing before some legendary culinary god.
No I do believe my stomach is singling your praises...
His tongue slipped from his lips, sliding along them or just a moment before slipping back in. He barely knew what to think, beside being elated, much less where to start.
I havent a clue! Though I hardly know what any of it is, it all looks so exquisitely delicious!
He hovered for a moment, over the plates just trying to find something that called out to him above the others. He recognized the veggies, steak, uncooked fish, there was more too them than just that. Maybe Lucind could suggest something, or more her explanation would gift him with what he needed to make a choice.

"W-wait...!" Her exclamation came too late, most of the wine was already running down Maximos's throat.
"Ahh...you see, those elders were right, actually. Alcohol in all its forms - aside from pure alcohol that's not meant for drinking...though some people think they have to try..anyway. Alcohol's a drug. It's as simple as that. And like with all drugs, you can also become addicted to alcohol. So, it's all about the right measure." She grinned.
"And since you're a greenhorn on this field I'd suggest you better dun have more than lessay two glasses. Just...tell me if you're feeling different...weird." Lucind couldn't helping laughing.
A bit later, they were both staring at those little plates and bowls, all giving off a different smell. Or rather, the woman was staring at him, enjoying his fascinated, yet confusing look, until her eyes wandered over the many dishes, trying to decide which to begin with.
"Okay...hmm...try this here." Lucind pointed at the bowl with the Basmati rice. It smelled like any rice did - but also very sweet, almost like flowers. And it also tasted a little sweet. It was something plain to start with but, she thought, maybe the right thing to slowly wake his sense of taste. Then she put the curry in front of him - it was a mixture of all those different kind of curries, containing carrots and meat in a yellowish gravy -, asking to try it together with the rice.
After that, Lucind chose the potatos, which had been given into a pan with butter, a wee bit of salt and tiny leaves of rosemary, picked from the stem; followed by the vegetables - she wondered if he'd like the lightly bitter tasting Brussels sprouts - with the sweet, creamy sauce Hollandaise and the pepper flavoured steaks. Those three parts or portions together, she mentioned, would make an average, but popular meal.
"It doesn't have a special name then. But in many countries it's common that you serve meat in combination with vegetables and staple foods...ah, staple food is a food that...kind of...builds the basis of a traditional diet, particulary that of the poor. It varies from place to place..uhm, rice, for example, belongs to that group. Also potatos, though not that much in this area. The most important thing is that this kind of food provides you with as much energy as possible and that you can store it throughout the year."
And while she mentioned this and that, the woman moved on to the chicken, glistening with the orange-mint marinade - "Rice would also go well with that." -, then to the salty cucumber pear salad.
Whenever Maximos was done with one dish, Lucind would pull over the plate or bowl to her to have her share.

Oh.
He sort of paused awkwardly with the wine glass in his hands. His eyes shot from it to the bottle, back to it and then to Lucind. He didnt think all that was true. And he was almost worried if he was about to have some serious mental breakdown....almost...There was a bit of tingling but nothing serious. Maximos, while he hadnt a clue was of rather hardy stock, it would take a lot to bring his faculties down. But....just in case, he set the glass down. A bit of an awkward smile slipped its way across his lips as he wondered whether or not he had just made a grand fool of himself.
But he continued otherwise unhindered.
His eye scanned over the rice, wanting to remember the entire experience from look to taste...just in case. He even leaned over, just a bit, gently shutting his eyes as he took in the full sweet, almost floral scent. He was intoxicated by its flavor before even tasting it. Soon he slipped his fork into the rice, and gently carried it to his lips. His eye stayed on Lucind as the widest grin spread across his features.
So this is taste...
He thought to himself silently, never daring to be so rude as to speak with a full mouth. He took a surprisingly small portion for such a tall person. Pacing himself was a key in order to enjoy all of what he was presented with.
The curry impacted him like a sledgehammer to the face. His eyes opened, his nostrils flared, he even leaned back a bit as if it had earnestly just attacked him. Very slowly he inched his way closer to it. The strongest spice Maximos had ever been presented with in all of his lifetime was salt, and perhaps a few local leaves. This meal this....well as of yet he hadnt a clue what it was called, but it was so very filled with spice it honestly shocked him! He had no idea food could contain so very much flavor, and so soon afterward partook with utter glee. The way the gravy rolled around his tongue, the simple gentle and yet burning texture of the curry embraced his tongue with the sort of love parents warn there children against. It burned him with hatred then soothed him with a rigid sweetness...he simply couldnt help but take a bit more than the last portion.
Then came the potatoes. They seemed innocuous enough, they were simply vegetables. He had seen them before, so without much preparation he dug in. He had no idea the sort of flavor that hid behind such a seemingly ordinary package, he immediately moved the brussel sprouts before settling on what was clearly the focus....the steak. A close friend of his always enjoyed a fresh, raw, steak daily. He had never understood the fuss...now he did. While Maximos never would partake of raw meat this....this defied words. The texture...the simple elegance of it flavor...the combination of smooth potatoes with biting sprouts and the entire experience nearly supernatural. It was quite possible he had found one of his favorite foods.
His eye stayed focused on Lucind, his face saying all the things his mouth was too busy to speak. To look at her and flatly say "Its good!" would have been an insult. But the surpassing amount of pleasure on his face was entirely visible. Her words were as true as they were wise though. Dried fish and various vegetables were a Shadow Lands staple. It always gave just enough boost to continue the second half of training.
...I like it...
After spending a bit of extra time Maximos made his way to the chicken. The orange almost reminded him of candy, but the mint and sweet rice together each played off each other giving it a unique and easily prize-worthy flavor. Without words, Maximos knew this was the sort of meal he would dream about it. As if coffee and cake were not enough to drive Maximos' memory crazy even after death, Lucind had done it again. This food would haunt him in only the best ways.
And to top it all off, was the salad. It was salty and sweet, yet light and refreshing. He had drowned himself if strong flavors, and the salad was a wonderful finisher to the meal as a whole. It washed his pallet clean, while leaving it with a tingling reminder of the kind of flavors he had been presented with. He would make a point to express his gratitude several times during the meal, and to leave Lucind with more than plenty for her helping. He could never keep that sort of sanguine pleasure for himself alone!

She smiled softly noticing his uneasy looks at the glass in his hand and the bottle.
"But you see, wine, or this wine doesn't contain that much alcohol. There're much stronger drinks. I just can't tell how you're going to react to it, with your new body an'all.
And when you're in a restaurant, it's common to take moderate sips of any beverages. Hmm...I mean okay, it also depends on how exclusive the restaurant is. In many diners it's perfectly fine to drink your coke or beer directly from the bottle. I suppose a general 'rule' is not to drown your drink - when you're in a public inn that looks at least somewhat neat and where you don't find rats in your meal, haha."
Even though she had just pointed out his 'misbehaviour' of nearly gulping a full glass at once, the tone of her voice told him that it was okay, that there was no reason for him to feel embarrassed.
To watch him trying one sample after another, to watch his reaction was fascinating, and Lucind nearly forgot to have a few bites from each plate herself. She was about to ask him if he was okay, fearing the curry might've been too much for his senses - but when he took several spoons full of it, she smiled inwardly.
And for a while, the woman really forgot about everything else. "We could walk down into the kitchen later on, then you can directly give Bernard your thanks."
When they had finished the salad, she picked one of the sushi from a square plate: "We're not through yet. Unless you're full, which would be no problem as well!" The different sushi - rolled ones wrapped in roasted seaweed and filled with cucumber, mango and carrots; rice 'sausages' with raw salmon and tuna on them; seaweed wraps, cylindrical pieces filled with shrimps, tofu and pickled vegetables - would calm down Maximos taste buds. The flavours would be various as well, but much more subtle.
There was also a tiny glass bowl filled with soy sauce and a tea spoon full of wasabi: before he could get near of any of those two, Lucind would explain, that is warn him of the very salty and extremely hot impact of both ingredients.
At the end, only those thin spaghetti were left, with the green couloured pesto, the fried king prawns that yet had to be freed of their shell and the spicy-sweet chilli mango chutney.
For a few seconds, Lucind thought that it would be good if not only one of them had a bit of this dish - sniffing the garlic being part of the pesto...

Oh! My apologies.
Maximos said, laughing at Lucinds joke at the end of the explanation, and taking a formal sip from the glass. Etiquette told him that certain old more potent form's of menavena were to be taken slowly at a dinner table. Unfortunately he had never seen or tasted these rich drinks and had entirely failed to recognize wine as one of them. Now that the connection was made, the shadow took a small sip of the drink and sat it down. A calm, relaxed, and otherwise re-assured smile spread across his lips.
I would like that very much. Oh no no, I'd love more!
He said in response to thanking Bernard. Sushi...he didnt know it by that name but he knew it well! It was raw fish! While he had never tasted the cucumbers, mango, tofu, or about half of the mixed vegetables he knew this flavor almost too well. It was nostalgic, and the way he popped the bits into his mouth and seemed to gleefully chew them almost seemed reminiscent of a child at a dinner table. Granted a well behaved child, but one none the less!
As he finished the fishy delights he gestured to the stringy noodly meaty substance left over, with his fork. He had no clue what flavors it hide, but Lucind seemed to be oddly examining and sniffing it, leading Maximos for a moment to question how safe that meal was but more so it lead him to ask...
...whats that?

"Ah..." Had her face betrayed her, had her reaction on the least meal been too scrutinizing?
"It's quite tasty." And she explained the different parts of the dish, assuming that he surely had had such prawns, or large shrimps, before. By then, the danger of a certain quirky grin appearing on her lips was gone so that she could look at him, taking one of the prawns and breaking the shell to remove it until she could take a first bite, holding the tail that was still wrapped around the light pink flesh beneath.
Afterwards, Lucind taught him the easiest way to tame the spaghettini with fork and spoon. The latter soon became slippery from the fat glistening on the king prawns's outside - but Bernard had been thoughtful enough to enclose two packed refreshment tissues and an extra bowl of fresh water.

Oh my, the shrimp around the Shadow Lands never came this big. These things were monstrous, and crunchy, yet smooth and yummy. The seasonings washed over an already elated tongue as Maximos crunched away at at least two. Then came the tricky noodles of the spaghettini. It was like corning a wily foe. Maximos' expression moved from simple elation, to deep concentration to downright battle-esque form, holding his form like a sword as he tried to parri and parley the noodles onto his fierce weapon all...met with failure...
Until of course Lucind showed him the trick to claiming utter victory on his slippery foes. And finally he partook with ferocity. He never lost a bit of his style or grace, but one could see he got just that bit of extra thrill from chomping down on the noodles.
They were strong, he could almost feel the sauce permeating his mouth and breath. And for a second, felt a bit nervous openly saying anything to Lucind for fear of being offensive. Instead he happily munched, while smiling innocent, ever steadily gaining garlic breath. Though trying to keep a healthy coat of water washing through his mouth for damage control.

It afforded all composure she was able to bring up not to burst out with laughter - Lucind but managed to hide a broad grin, a few chuckles and a mumbled, "Cute..", behind some sips of wine, another hand-sized prawn and some more spaghettinis.
Finally, the two of them had finished off every single portion, and the Half-Siren leaned back, sighing in the bliss of being seated, but not really full. Refilling their wine glasses she thought there was still enough space in her stomach for...
"Up for something sweet?"
After another mouthful of wine she wiped her mouth with the large cotton napkin which had been lying on her lap.
"Ice cream? Rice pudding? Cookies? Or...I let you have a look at our selection and you can decide yourself.
And then....well, then it's story telling time."
Lucind gave him a relaxed smile and went on:
"We actually had to take milk and cookies with us in my room to make it right." And if Maximos's look told her he didn't know anything about that stereotype but nevertheless true picture of children having cookies and milk while some adult guided them through the wonders and marvels of a fairytale, well, then she would tell him.
Finally, the woman added, catching herself at the attempt of sounding as casual as possible: "Milk's also helping a bit to get rid of the garlic flavour..." She pointed at the remnants of the pesto that contained the healthy, tasty but otherwise socially problematic plant.
