"Oh ... sorry," Ahren flushed and slowed his pace slightly. He really did feel bad for making Shael do more than she had to, after all he knew how hard it had been for her just to learn to walk normally, and he knew that running for her was completely out of the question.

"If you say so..." Lin murmured.

Though if Shael said so, she must know after all, she had to work with Elberon.

Yes... that was what the others called him! Now she could remember, and Miyu smiled brightly at that. That was exactly the person she was looking for even if some could not believe it.

"That's what Lin calls him."

Shael smiled kindly at Lin. "He'll be fine, don't worry about him. No one is ever as angry with him as they might let on, it's just a relatively effective way of getting a few moments of peace every now and then."

She led the children over to the corral and motioned for them to climb up onto the fence. "Make sure you don't fall," she warned them. "It's a long way down, and I don't want you to hurt yourselves."

The elf blinked at Miyu once more and tilted his head curiously. "Interesting," he murmured. "I shall never understand why children always have such a fascination with the man. But if you would like, I can take you to him. He may still be in his room, though he should be heading out on duty soon."

Lin looked at the fence for a moment, "Don't worry, I won't."

After all she mused as she climbed the fence, she never did like to see herself fall as a little Surprise. She was quite use to that danger, so it didn't bother her that much.

"Thank you! I would like that very much mi....." Miyu smiled happily.

Maybe she could go out with him if that was okay with him. That was always nice, it was something familiar.

Ahren grinned as he climbed up the rungs and perched himself atop the fence.

"I'm always careful," he grinned at Shael. "I never hurt myself."

Or rather, he did at times, but whenever it happened he always got Arwen to take care of him so that the adults wouldn't find out.

Shael smiled. "Then I'll be right back," she told the two of them. "Make yourselves comfortable, I just need to grab us a horse for a minute."

And she let herself through the gate into the paddock, closing it after herself, and headed off to grab one of the horses.

The elf chuckled softly. "You're very welcome," he said warmly, putting one hand on Miyu's shoulder and turning her around gently. "Now, this way, down to the end of the hall first."

He prodded her gently to get her walking.

"By the way," he ventured, "can you see in here?"

Lin looked down, she had never sat on a fence before. It was a bit of a balancing act she thought to herself as she held on before looking out in the field. When was the last time she had been in this area? Probably since the first time she came here.

"Okay."

Even though she had been in the dark for a while, she really couldn't see much if anything. It wasn't like she had any special eye sight after all.

"No... it's all... black."

Ahren grinned at Lin as they waited for Shael to return.

"You excited for this?" he asked her eagerly, balancing as if he were used to sitting like that. "Cos I am, I never taught anyone anything before. I just hope I'm a good teacher."

He chuckled. "At least you'll know what the parts of a horse are, I know Shael's a good teacher."

The elf nodded thoughtfully. "I see," he murmured. "Well then I'll just have to tell you everything we're passing, so that next time you can find your own way around, even if it's with a hand on the wall."

And as they passed the hall that led to the door he nodded to it. "That's where you came in. You turned right at the end of the hall, that leads to where the night shift fighters are. Instead, next time you come, turn left - the way that we're heading now - and it will lead you down another corridor to some stairs."

Lin giggled at this, now that she thought about it, it was exciting. She hadn't had tried something like this since Elros had taken her to pet a horse. The little girl could almost recall perfectly the feel and the nervousness that ensued that day.

"Yea, actually I am."

She listened carefully nodding at his words, "He lives upstairs?"

She hadn't realized that at all, though she supposed he would be able to be away from people more up on the second floor than the first.

It was only a moment before Shael was back, followed by a tall black horse with a long mane a tail. It had a white diamond in the middle of its forehead, and one white sock.

"This is Brego," she told Lin, taking the horse into the corral and closing the gate between the corral and the paddock. "He's one of the oldest horses we have here. Very well trained, he was Amdir's first project."

The elf smiled at Miyu in the darkness. "Indeed," he nodded. "Though it's far easier to find your way around up there than down here. Only one hallway, no turns, since it only takes up half the barracks and there's a dividing wall between the day shifters and the night shifters."

He grabbed her shoulder gently. "Here's the turn for the stairs," he murmured, turning her to the right.

Ahren grinned at Lin. "He's the horse I learned how to ride on!" he told her excitedly. "He's really nice, he never bucks like some of the other ones!"

Indeed, he was probably the most gentle horse on the ranch - impressive, considering how wild he had used to be, according to Amdir's stories.

"Really?" Lin asked looking at him, the horse was rather handsome.

Horses were still big compared to her, but at least she didn't feel hopelessly small compared to the horse this time.

Miyu allowed him to steer her in the right direction.

"How do other people are able to walk around here?" she asked softly.

Since she was getting the impression that the person helping her could see very well in here, but she was sure not everyone was like that.

Shael smiled. "He's quite kind, very easy to handle," she nodded reassuringly. "There really is no better horse for beginners, so Lin, I think it would be a good idea for you to start off by riding him as well."

She patted the horse on the neck, then stroked his shining withers. "So," she smiled at the children. "Shall we begin?"

And she set off into the lesson.

The elf smiled at her. "They know their way around," he replied simply. "Or there are those who can see in here, like myself, or there are those who can create their own light ... some use glowstones, others ... just feel their way where they're going."

Of course, he couldn't think of other explanations, though there were many, but they all involved light, which he couldn't understand.

"Make light?" Miyu mused on this.

She wondered why she had not thought about it sooner? But she couldn't use magic without an adult watching her, but she was sure it wasn't too different from making a star right? She would prefer that than feeling around.

"That would make it less scary."
