Super Monkey-Chan: Ooo~o, okay. Essentially, of the above listed names are fauna from the Cambrian explosion, when life on Earth abruptly took off into several hundred thousand forms. These in particular were discovered in the Burgess Shale--and they are some of the WEIRDEST critters ever.
Opabinia regalis, for example, has five eyes and a grasping proboscis.
Pikaia gracilens is comparatively
tame in its appearance. It's believed to be the urchordate, and the first ancestor of all members of the phylum Chordata, to which humans belong. Essentially, the "short version" for my bizarre RP idea is a world where
Opabinia regalis was the urancestor of intelligent life on Earth, and the subsequent species (I call them the paheo) discovered that in almost all alternate universes to their own, they were supplanted by the chordate descendents of
Pikaia. (Mostly humans, but some civilized whales and dogs and other things.)
The idea itself is called "Pikaia's Children", and involves all sorts of reality-hopping nonsense while a group of xenophobic paheo try to ensure that
Opabinia becomes the dominant species in all possible versions of Earth, while more level-headed paheo, humans, and others try to stop them.
