Gendou Kia127 Only a bullet; I've always been under the impression that the bolt isn''t big enough to bounce around in the head like a bullet. It doesn''t have to. Anything with enough velocity to penetrate bone fully will have enough force to render brain tissue to pulp. Hmm. Although not seeing the practice myself, I think Kia's right. Shreds would be expected of multiple attacks, even if they were just 'piercing' instead of 'slashing'. If so, it would have to be done by the fragments of skull being pushed in (and rough) slashyslushying it. But I'm still waiting for the next chapter.. GENDOU WILL RAISE DEAD WERES AND HAVE THEM KILL EVERYTHING @_____@@!!!111

Samatros Hmm. Although not seeing the practice myself, I think Kia's right. Shreds would be expected of multiple attacks, even if they were just 'piercing' instead of 'slashing'. If so, it would have to be done by the fragments of skull being pushed in (and rough) slashyslushying it. The velocity of a heavy crossbow can exceed 230 feet per second. At that speed, the impact of the bolt creates a relatively high amount of shock inside the confines of the skull, and that's with minimal penetration. Full penetration would be even more catastrophic.

Okay as to this whole 'Can a crossbow bold "shred" a brain?' thing: Technically, 'shred' probably isn't the right word to use when describing the effects of a projectile entering the brain case; however, as far as imagery goes, 'shred' is about as accurate as you're going to get.
Firstly, when an object penetrates the skull, fragments of bone will enter the brain. I don't think I need to spell out what that would mean for the brain. Secondly, the penetrating object would cause cavitations of the brain tissue (the stretching of the hole in the brain left by the projectile), which would be further (albeit temporarily) expanded by the shockwave produced by the projectile's penetration. With a bullet, this entire process can create a temporary hole in the brain up to 30 times larger than the bullet itself. (Just to give you an idea of what that means, a .22 could leave a temporary hole up to six inches in diameter.) This temporary hold contracts quickly, but you can imagine the effect that it can have on the brain. Now, the process won't be as dramatic with an object traveling at a markedly slower speed, but the results would be very similar.
So, in summary, 'shredding' is not technically what happens, but in terms of giving you a visual it beats the hell out of 'rapid compression of brain matter directed outward from the projectile's course through the brain'.
In terms of description, writing is not a technical endeavor. What is the most correct description may lack visceral-ness, the ability to convey an appropriate image, or just succinctness. With that in mind, 'shred' works just fine here.
Are we done now?
