For example, my husband when he does he research for nursing, he doesn't go through American sites, he usually goes through UK and Australian sites. Here in the US they are very adamant against Pepto Bismol for kids, but in the UK, they use it sparingly, but not so worried about it.
.
It's because parents were using it for everything but it has Salilycates in it (Asprin) so if the child has the flu it can Cause Reyes Syndrome.
NOW onto what is important.
Knowing EVERYTHING is not what's really important it's just knowing generally what you'd want if given an option. And really, having a doctor who would give you the option.
Do you want little medical intervention? Lots?
Do you want to be able to move around? (Some hospitals make it policy that you stay in bed)
Do you think you'd want to be able to sip juice or milk or tea instead of just ice chips?
Do you want to be offered drugs straight out?
WHAT ARE your feelings on drugs, epidural, spinal block?
Basically if you could have an IDEAL PERFECT birth what would happen?
If you can lay that out as goal while keeping in mind that sometimes there are medical impediments such as meconium staining, difficult to monitor babies, etc. then you should do just fine.
You just need to make sure that you get what you ask for within reason. I mean you're not stupid, I'm not stupid, no one here is stupid, we all know that a birth plan and our ideals go right out the window if something is medically wrong.
But we shouldn't be treated like something is wrong if our pregnancy and labor is going just fine. I went through 36 hours of labor with them telling me that my baby was doing BEAUTIFULLY, her heart rate was FANTASTIC, my BP, my heart rate everything was GORGEOUS WONDERFUL PERFECT! oh but stay in that bed.
It's the difference between feeling like you've "GIVEN BIRTH" and someone "Delivered your baby." The difference between doing something or having something DONE to you. Birth should feel like you've DONE something. I am still in awe about how perfect and amazing my second birth experience was. And I didn't even get to do all the things I "Wanted" to. But I was listened to.
