10/15 Standard Gloomiron Ingot

6/15 Shields

Quality product or no, Rota continued to keep ignoring the shields he was making in favor of making more and more like clockwork. He placed the iron ingot and the coal in their proper places, and he made sure to heat each to continue his shield crafting escapades. He knew he could make 15 shields total. He really...REALLY hoped he wouldn't need to slog through all 15 before making an appropriate shield for Alyx. The right inspiration needed to hit him, and until then all he could do was bide his time and let his hands do his dirty work until he had his proper form back solidly in place.

Rota was beginning to feel emotionally drained as he placed another set of coal and ingot into the forge. So much of one activity could really wear on someone, despite how required it was. There was no cure for it. He needed to beat his head against the brick wall that was 'shields' until it crumbled before him. He woukd rather do that than go back on his word. He needed to make a good shield, end of story. To that end, he kept pressing ever forward in the forge he was borrowing for this extended period. Until this was done, little else mattered. He was barely aware of the world around him as this was going on, his body on autopilot as his brain did other things. Muscle memory would be his frame of knowledge from this point on. It would hold all of his knowledge of shields since he couldn't be bothered to focus.

Rota shook his head and decided that enough was enough. He was going to stop moping and focus. He was the demon artisan, dammit, not some mopey smith loser! He felt the fire in his belly once more as he placed a piece of coal in the forge and an ingot of iron in the forge. He was determined to make the shield that Alyx deserved of his own volition, not because he was put of sorts. When the time was right, he pulled the ingot from the flames and beat it with his new hammer using all of the rekindled flame in his soul. His hands still largely controlled his actions, but it was only because he was letting fate shape them. His attention was still on the shield at large. Each rivet that went in was noted, each arm strap lovingly put in place. He was done thinking other things. This is where his attention needed to be.

Rota was still not looking at quality right now. He would focus on that later. Right now he needed to focus on just making them, and waiting for inspiration to strike. He placed another coal and ingot in their proper places and just watched the ingot heat. He worked the bellows of course, but he was far less scattershot right now. He was trying his damndest to focus on a task that required his dedication. For the sake of his friend, he was going to give it his all. The ingot heated nicely and so he pulled it from the flames and beat it o. The anvil with his hammer. His hammer. He could finally say that now. Out of all the tools and locations he had used, this was the one thing right now he could claim. That was a really good feeling. So good that it made him want his own forge more and more as the days passed. He refocused, and locked his attention on the task at hand. Fate still shaped the shields, but it was his will making them. He hoped that that would bring about some of the desired result.

2/3 done. Rota was so close to his goal that he could taste it, and yet no closer to what he actually wanted. Maybe he was trying to hard to force miracles, but he had to try. He placed another set into the forge and heates the ingot as best he could. He would not give up on the dream. It remained alive until the 15th shield. He needed his inspiration to hit, it was the only way. He focused hard, pulling the ingot out of the hearth and placing it on the anvil. He maintained his focus on that ingot, beating it into shape. His hands flew, his muscle memory working for him in the best ways possible. With this practice session, he would be set for a good long time on his crafting quota. That meant that he woumd be free to do other things if he wanted. The mining expedition still loomed in the back of his mind, but he needes to feel like a warrior again after this. Regardless another shield had been made and it was time to move onto the next.

Rota was officially in the home stretch. The only thing that stood between him and his goal was himself now. But there was no going back. He was going to see this through to the end. He placed more coal and iron in their needed places. The ending began with them. It was through them that he could make the shield he was always meant to make for Alyx. He wished it would finally hurry up and get here. Despite making some very good quality shields, he admitted as he was looking at them inbetween the actual smithing process, they were not on par with the legendary weapons he had made. Any companion to Gloomshard would need to be able to stand up to it as an equal, not as a subordinate. If he remained uninspired in the correct ways, it seemed like whatever shield he gave Alyx woukd be doomed to that fate. He would give him a FANTASTIC shield, but it would still wouldn't compare to Alyx's sword. Regardless, he pulled the ingot out of the flames when it was time and began shaping the new shield. Rota put all of his determination and skill into the shield, focusing on it and only it the whole time. Nothing else mattered in those crucial moments but the shield itself.

1 Mythic Gloomiron Ingot
6/18 Coal
12/15 Shields

Rota continued making progress. With him being so close there was no point in giving up now. The fire in his heart persisted as he placed another set of materials in the forge. He caught another spark of inspiration, so he used the one Mythic level Ingot he had for this shield. He tended the ingot with care, making sure not to heat it too unevenly or fast. He didn't want to wreck the material he was using just to get done faster. He made sure to turn the ingot while it was heating to give it an even heat. Cooking was remarkably like smithing when he thought about it. It didn't concern him though, so he didn't worry about it all too much. When the time was right he pulled the ingot from the hearth and placed it on the Anvil. He began to beat it into shape with his hammer, once more letting fate shape the shield. Although this method hadn't worked so far, he held out hope that it would. If he refused to influence the appearence of the shield, maybe true inspiration would strike.

The smithing continued as Rota placed another set of ingot and Coal in the forge. Work was going well, and his morale was still high. He knew that no matter what Alyx was going to get an exquisite shield, and that was what he had to focus on. He could not focus on the negative any longer. When the ingot was ready, he pulled it onto the anvil and began pounding it into shape. Fate continued to shape his shields, and honestly it made sense for him to do so. It allowed there to be a broader diversity in his shield styles rather than always being a heater shield. He needed to branch out, and this way was the most efficient way to do that. A forging stream of consciousness. Some would argue against that way of thinking, but he didn't mind. No one needed to understand his methods, just acknowledge his skill.

Rota marched on with the flow of progress. Despite two distractions, he was making good time on his standard ingots. They were almost all gone. That thought, he placed another set of standard iron and coal in the forge. He continued to show the project his full attention, making sure not to miss a single needed step of the process. His movements were methodical, his precision laser point. Even as he pulled the ingot from the forge his movements were fluid and purposeful. He still maintained his philosophy of letting destiny shape the shields as he beat on the ingot. It was mostly working out for him by sending him small fragments of inspiration, but he was confident that a full on breakthrough was at the end of this ordeal. There had to be. Otherwise, he still had plans for these shields.

With that last shield, this is where Rota would have left things off if all had gone as projected. However, there were two distractions inbetween shields so he was actually two ingots ahead of the game. He still had enough coal to make the remaining two into shields, so he placed a new set in the forge. He was going to go until the bitter end with this, giving his inspiration plenty of time to get here. In any case his movements stayed Zen. He was one with his borrowed forge, and the environment acknowledged his talent. Every tool resonated with his being as he pulled the ingot fromthe flames. His hammer came down on the ingot at the rhythm of his heart as he beat it into destiny's shape. He was almost done. Just one more shield and he would be able to do some of the things he had planned. He was excited to try them out.

1/15 Standard Gloomiron Ingot

16/15 Shields

This was one of the last chances he had to be inspired. The final shield to be made of standard ingot had come. If he wasn't inspired now, he still had one last shot if he used a different grade. In any case, he placed the last set of standard and coal in the forge. His body began to shake in nervousness. What if he didn't get it? What would he do? NO! He had to stay vigilant. He would see this through, no matter the outcome. He flipped the ingot several times, making sure the heat was even throughout. When the time had come, he pulled it from the forge and began to beat it into its predetermined shape. There was no telling how this was going to go at this point, but Rota's resolve remained firm. Legend or not, this shield, and possibly onw after it, were being made. It was that simple.

0/15 Standard Gloomiron Ingot
1 Flawless Gloomiron Ingot
1/18 Coal
17/15 Shields

It was time to take a risk. Rota didn't like using his higher grade ingots at present without a guarantee, but he only had one piece of coal left. It had to be lucky. He placed it and a Flawless ingot in the forge and let the ingot heat up. There was no going back now. This was the last cha ce for inspiration. If it refused to happen now, he would have to resort to plan B. If plan b was even possible by the point all this learning had caught up with him. He watched the ingot carefully, and when it was time he pulled it from the forge and placed it on the anvil. He began beating it into shape, a thing he was not used to doing with these higher grade ingots. They both require little effort, and more effort in this state. More because they were very durable and unwilling to bend to another's will. Little because despite that they were very comfotable to work with. In any case, the last shield was complete, for better or worse.

18/15 Shields

All of Rota's resources were exhausted. Despite making 18 shields in a row, true inspiration had never struck. The dream was well and truly dead now. Despite this, Rota still felt proud as he looked at the mountain of shields he had made. Some were better than others, but as a whole he proved his work ethic in this session. Despite desperately needing coal now, he could hold his head high.

After making his metric buttload of shields, Rota stepped out into the center of the village, and planted his sword in the ground tip down. He cleared his throat and cracked his neck. His heart was beating out of his chest already, and he hadn't even said anything yet. He began. "Listen up, Gods! I am Rota Abyssian, and I am making a formal challenge of combat against any one of you who decide to answer the call! I am not a monster like the one who took down your kin, I merely wish to spar and see the strength of the ones who should be the true protecters of this realm, and how such a beast who stole your powers beat a true god! Answer my challenge and we'll have a fun time! Stay silent and be labelled cowards!"
