The water he'd thought he heard seemed to be real after all. It was just a small stream, but the water was cool and refreshing, and he hastily took the chance to wash his face and clean some smushed bugs off of his arms.
As he blinked water out of his eyes, another rock came into focus. No, wait! A dragon? Head tilted, he leaned forward to get a better look, catching himself when he nearly fell head-first into the water.
"Woah! Hey, Mister Turtle! Aw, look at your face. You're cute."
It didn't even occur to him that tortoises were creatures that one could ride. He laughed as he gave him a pat on his beak, offered some water in his cupped hand, and bid him goodbye after he was done drinking.

The rising sun began to filter in through the canopy. It grew brighter as Thackery approached what he thought was a new clearing, and he picked up his pace in hopes of finding something. And he did, but it was only Mister Sleepyfeet.
"Mister Sleepyfeet," he addressed him, hands on hips. "You still haven't found a buddy? Maybe if you stopped being so sleepy!" He understood that it was part of his name and all, but it was possible to break away from that identity. He was a dragon, after all. So he was probably stronger than just a name.
"Sweet dreams," he offered, hugging his head and departing once more.

Finding himself face-to-face with another mountain goat, Thackery considered changing his mind for a brief moment. Maybe, as long as he stayed away from its face, it would make a suitable mount...
...no. He wasn't willing to take that chance, no matter how much his feet were beginning to hurt.
"I know what you're up to. Sneaky goats. Not gonna happen."
He lamented the lack of his natural form again as he turned on his heel and picked a new direction.

Only to run smack into another goat. Was it the same goat? Thackery was kind of beginning to think so. He picked up a stick and waved it threateningly in its direction, just so it would know who was boss. It didn't move, just stared at him with its awful goaty yellow eyes and cloth-eating teeth. From a tree.
"How did you even..." he wondered, frowning.

Angered by his discovery of the Great Goat Conspiracy, Thackery just wandered until it got relatively quiet, found a bug-free spot, and plopped down. Maybe he'd just wait for the mount to come to him. That would mean they were destined for each other, right?
So he waited until the sun moved from one foot to the other, warming the decaying leaves around him.
Nothing was going to come. Who was he kidding? He pushed himself up and brushed the leaves off of his pants.
"Would've been neat..." he complained, rolling his eyes at the forest's lack of ability to make fate happen.

And the forest got back at him for cursing it, placing another tree-goat in his path. Thackery didn't notice this one until it was far too late, and it nearly gave him a heart-attack, sending him flailing backwards. He'd been in clothes-chewing range.
"I TOLD YOU NO." he snapped, leaving it in a huff.
Walking in circles was such an unsettling sort of feeling.

The unsettling feeling grew and grew until there were the beginnings of knot-feelings in his stomach; knots that would inevitably be tied better than the knots he'd attempted on the previous day. He slowed his pace, carefully stepping around crunchy-looking sticks or noisy brush, ears tilted backward to better grasp his surroundings. There were footsteps that didn't quite match his own, but it didn't sound like humanoid steps. Not another student. This was worrying.
Assuming that a goat finally dislodged itself from a tree to follow him for his tasty clothes, he spun around to catch it off-guard, but found a large wolf instead. A large wolf who was licking his chops at the sight of a feathered humanoid.
Thackery wished that he could shift into his natural form, so he wouldn't look quite so delicious. Probably. What fun it would be to run around with a wolf! Wait. He still could.
"The forest fulfilled our destiny after all! Mister Growlnose! I know it's you."
He was sure that Mister Growlnose just had to pretend he was going to eat him to keep up appearances. It made sense. Living in a forest was probably really hard work, and he had to look extra strong by eating creatures stronger than he was. With his hand held towards the wolf, he approached him like one might approach an old friend. Not the smartest of tactics when dealing with a hungry animal, but it seemed to confuse him a little bit, buying Thackery some time.

Within a comfortable range of Mister Growlnose, Thackery reached to untie the rope he'd been wearing around his waist. It still had the slipknot from the previous day, thank Jack, so he didn't have to waste time on that nonsense. Instead, he sprung into action, flung the rope around his neck, and secured it as best he could. Mister Growlnose didn't appreciate this, and he supposed he could understand why; after all, he hadn't been roped and restrained like this during the trials. It set a bad precedent. He would have been totally fine just hugging close to the wolf's coarse fur again, but they'd been explicitly informed that lassoing was important, so that's what he did. The wolf snapped and growled, living up to his name. His eyes flashed furiously, as if to question the Cerberus' intentions, wondering how the tables had so quickly been turned. He lunged out, prepared to turn the worthless fleshy creature into a light breakfast, but found himself strangely deterred. He stood still in concentration, calling forth his FEAR. It came easily, insisting to the rest of the world that he was stronger and more superior than he actually appeared, and this was no exception. Mister Growlnose backed down without a fight, averting his gaze and respectfully kneeling to allow him onto his back. "I knew you'd remember! Mister Growlnose, you're just the best. I hope everyone always tells you that. If not, I'll tell you enough to make up for it. The best, the best, the best," he began to sing, climbing up to wrap his arms around the wolf's neck. The song happily continued in his fellow canine's ear, and the two of them speedily departed back towards the main clearing without issue. Because who wouldn't want to carry Thackery around? Nobody. That's right. Ain't nobody. Marushii MOUNT GET! Character Name: Thackery Mount Acquired: Wolf

At least this gave that lassoing exercise some relevance.
Still, a mount? Serafina was no horseman! ... Though these people were, so the fact that they thought a mount was a good idea should perhaps come at no surprise at all. She straightened her back and sighed, ready to get started on what looked to be a rather long adventure for a mount. Of those who had left already, very few had returned by the time she walked out.
Maybe she would find something quickly...

A dragon? Her eyes lit up in interest.
Well.
What she had to do was summon her Fear, right? She puffed up her back, summoning what she would usually use to essentially offer herself anyway--hey, that worked--and hoped that she would overpower this dragon. Admittedly, even she had to admit she would look pretty badass wandering around on a dragon.
A soft 'meep' spilled from her lips as the dragon stared her down.
Uh-oh.

Alright, well, she could give it another shot, right?
Her chest puffed out again, and she attempted to look as absolutely menacing as possible. She would invoke Fear into this Dragon.
Or maybe the dragon would invoke fear into her.
Frightened, Serafina scurried off, in an attempt to find something else.

And off she went again, looking for an actual mount, this time... One that wouldn't stare her down with the fury of death itself. Well. War itself? This was the Isle of War...
And nothing.
Sigh.
Off she went again...

Maybe she would find a mount this time?
...A goat?
Eating her clothes?
Eek! Serafina scoffed at it, smacking it lightly and jumping away from it. She would never want to ride a mount that thought her fashionable clothes were good enough for eating. She was going to find something else. Even that frightening dragon would be better...

A tortoise?
That was a silly mount.
Immediately, she moved on, apologizing for bothering the ... rock.
