Berz, I think it is the Tyr v. Fenrir legend. Not sure where Kipling got the concept of Tyr giving an eye for the blade to do Fenrir in; I know Odin gave an eye for the Wisdom he sought in the Well. But still... it's a poem with many levels. Kipling was not happy about technology taking over the traditional arts of war and life, and a lot of his poems have this similar undertone. He was also a HUGE history and mythology buff, so there are always overtones and layers of that in his stuff too.
I'm glad to find another Leslie Fish fan! smile Every so often I wake up with her song about the Picts going through my head: "We are the little folk, we, too little to love or to hate--but leave us alone and you'll see how fast we can drag down the State!" Heh heh heh....
Jasta, Also a huge history and mythology buff....

hypnocrown Nice post Berzerker Prime, I'm with Fauxlorne though, I've never heard of it either till now. I hadn't either, until I heard Leslie Fish's song. The poem is just different enough from the myth of Tyr binding Fenrir that it makes me wonder if there's another Tyr myth story that I just haven't heard. Berz.

Really? And that's from what, Lord of the Rings? Cuz I know there's lots more about Tolkien's world that the movies fail to mention. A Fenrir is like the wolf from the wild things, right?
BTW, I have a question: Is Nessie more of a myth than a legend? I was just wondering if it qualified for us to talk about it here on somewhere else like, the alleged history thread maybe... mrgreen

That's who they named the wolf in Wild Things for yeah. Tyr and Fenrir are out of Norse and Germanic myth. Berz.

Right, I had no idea where the name of Fenrir came from. Did you know that in order for the Fenrir to look really good you need to have 3 wild armors? 3nodding
Ah, so Germanic mythology, hmm? Imagine that... mrgreen

When I was a kid, the legend that intrigued me the most was the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It seems funny now the way I had nightmares about it.

I meant the movie about Sleepy Hollow! Is it not about the whole headless horseman you were talking about? The movie is good, you should see it. 3nodding There's also a Disney version but I don't like it as much.

I'll poke Hod (very gently I promise) to post about Tyr and Fenrir; it'll help get his mind back onto productive things. *sad smile*
But Fenrir is actually the monster son of Loki and a giantess, and he appears as a HUGE very strong wolf. He's involved in the whole Ragnarok (old norse for "what goes around, comes around..." lol, kidding...) thing, and is kind of an interesting character.
Interesting game factoid: because there are various pantheons referred to in Final Fantasy, the occasional Norse reference is heard--and Cloud Strife's oversized (compensate much??) motorcycle is called Fenrir. Presumably because it's so... big and fierce? smile

I adore folklore! My dad used to tell us American folktales when we were kids, the basic ones, though I can't remember their names right now; and my mom and grandfather used to tell us ones from Brasil and Guatemala, but I don't remember any of them sad I used to love Native American folklore a lot as a child as well, and actually wrote a creation myth based on a tribe in Minnesota when I was about 9.
My favorite legends are Arthurian and Dracula... which makes it easy to see why my favorite books are Mists of Avalon and The Historian. I love Beowulf a ton too, but I wish they'd stop trying to make movies based on it! And I've always loved the folklore from Eastern Europe and Celtic countries the best. Stories about Selkies are probably my favorite of all (everyone should watch The Secret of Roann Innish, if you haven't already). I'm finding more and more classical music that's based on the folklore from these countries, so I've started learning more about it. A lot of my favorite Russian music is based on Russian folklore, for instance.
As for mythology, Celtic has always been my favorite. I read a translation of Mabigoni several years ago, which is Welsh mythology. I need to start reading the Tain though, as that is some of the most important mythology from Ireland, which is my biggest interest at the moment.

Hey Laura! You can go ahead and post any and all myths you have heard, ok? And if you'd like someone to post about something go ahead and say it too! wink
BTW, can you believe I still haven't see any movies about Beowulf? Not even the latest one made in CGI. I hear Angelina's character is pretty cool...
Gee Mr shaggy, that's too bad. See if you can find out more about it so you can come back to tell us. BTW, where did you leave Mr Scooby? Ha-ha! Sorry, I couldn't help myself, ha-ha! rofl
