You want Steampunk? Get the album "Beethoven's Last Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. "Flight of the Bumblebee" was meant to be played on electric guitar.

That sounds plausible. Have you gone back in time to check with Betthoven yet though?

Why waste a time trip just to confirm what I already know? It would be much better spent in going back to accquire a supply of Hidden Treasures cereal. That stuff was freaking awesome, and now it's gone, GONE! gonk

I'm not too sure what qualifies a band to be steampunk, but...there's this Norwegian band I'm particularly fond of, Kaizer's Orchestra. They've got a pump organ, among other things, and I always listen to at least one of their songs when I'm getting in the mood to write something....er, "clangy".
(I recommend Maestro and Bris.)

I must add a band I found on someone's LJ.

May I present The Tiger Lillies.

The singer's falsetto is practically comical, but combined with the general subject matter (gruesome children tales from the 1800s, slightly embroidered upon) it turns genius. whee heart

...why yes, I AM significantly morbid. D:

I LOVE THE TIGER LILIES! They're so deliciously WEIRD! whee

And since you mentioned a sort of old timey Americana/Rockabilly-inspired band, I feel obligated to mention Th' Legendary Shack Shakers. Their frontman is a PSYCHOPATH. I adore him.

Well...I wouldn'y say they were steampunk per se (officially they are folk rock, whatever kind of oxymoron that is), but they are certainly similar. And damn good in their own accord, I must say.

Vernian Process (linky linky O_Q) introduced me to this band:

Unextraordinary Gentlemen

You want more bands? Check out the features on Sepiachord
They feature a different Steampunk-ish band every day!

KumaBlind, you beat me to this topic, I was just going to make one similar! ^_^

Abney Park was what first got me interested in Steampunk. I heart them. It's too bad their music is so hard to find on CD. (of course it's that way it is with a lot of good indie music...)

As for more Steampunkish bands/artists, I've got a few suggestions. Perhaps not pure-blooded Steampunk, but more modern music with very classical/anachronistic inflections. These links will take you to the artists' respective MyspaceMusic accounts. biggrin

-Emilie Autumn
("Victoriandustrial")
-Dr. Steel
("Hip-hop industrial opera")
-Rasputina
("Mystically cellorific")

I love weird music. heart

I was just about to suggest Dr. Steel! heart

:takes copious notes on the whole thread: This should help me get started. Thanks everyone for suggestions!

I found a song through Brass Goggles that is steampunk for me. Sadly, the only version I could point you to right now is attached to a completely unrelated collection of clips from a tv show. So hit the link, start the song, and ignore the video. -_Q

I vote for Vanessa Mae because her music combines violins [steam] and rock [punk] in an excessively delicious way. heart

I'd have to agree with you there, her style is very cool.

eek Lemme dig up the linkage, I found 'em through a fairly circuitous path of random clickings....

In the meantime, I just grabbed an album off of iTunes and have become quite enamored of it. whee heart It caught my eye because the cover is an altered panel of Windsor McKay's Little Nemo In Slumberland a wonderful comic from the 1900s. Seriously, if you want some trippy goodness, check it out.

The artist himself, Daedelus, seems to comport himself in an exceedingly steampunk/antiquated fashion. His hair and sideburn combo are quite lovely. (I'm SUCH a sucker for those kinda sideburns. D: ) The music itself is electronic, but samples a lot of older songs. The album I've got is "Denies the Day's Demise", and my favorite tracks so far are 'Sundown' (which has a great video on YouTube) and 'Like Clockwork Springs.'

Daedelus MySpace

Sundown - 'steamiest' video I've seen
Just Briefly-another spiffy steam video
Fair Weather Friends - very cute animation. ^_^
