More theorys (Yes, i had a lot of sugar today):
Do you think that Azula has changed? We assumed that Zuko had (sadly), but has she shown any inclination to be anything over than overly ambitious, thinking herself superior to her grandfather and her brother (and possibly even to her father, though this has yet to be seen). We know that Azula always lies, at least to Zuko.
I don't trust Azula. With Mai and Ty Lee following her so closely, and I would assume that they are loyal to her, not merely from friendship, but also as their princess, and as a superior officer. We have seen Mai's characterization. Bored, not wanting to get her hands dirty, but unquestioning in most of what she accepts that Azula asks her to do (except for anything too icky). Yet, she wore makeup, and actually managed to pull the guise of a Kyoshi Warrior off, not only to the Earth King, who is still a bit too naive ot do much without his advisors, thanks to Long Feng, and the counsel, or what passes for one. If Mai can do that, then she might also be able to feign an interest in Zuko, under Azula's command.
Now, if it was Ty Lee, I'd have hope, because she liked Iroh, and thought he was funny. And any discussion of Zuko should beinbg Iroh under consideration ,too. We know Zuko still cares enough to go and bawl his uncle out, even though his uncle had already been branded a traitor since the incident in the North Pole.

That's a really good idea, and I thought that too.
We'll just have to see.

Maybe it's all some clever ruse to get rid of Azula... o.O;

Mizz_FUJIN Eruden Ki At any rate, why do people hate on Mai? She doesn't listen to Azula all the time (ie, in The Drill, where she refused to go into that muck, Actually... (Quoted from Avatar spirit.net )) Personality: Caustic and given to dead pan expressions, Mai yearns for excitement and does not hesitate to employ her assassin-like skills at the slightest provocation. Despite her strong personality, however, she obeys Azula without question, even to the point of putting her younger brother in danger during the hostage trade seen in "Return to Omashu." You do realize that AvatarSpirit.net isn't run by people who work on Avatar, correct? I should know, I'm a moderator there. And, the episode The Drill (which I cited in my original ) is later, so it could be a character change, somewhat. ^^ Anyways, I've already ranted about this. Mai is better for Zuko than Katara would be, and that's one of my main reasons for supporting it, other than the whole 'years of unrequited crushing' schtick that hits my heart strings. There might be a time where Mai doesn't know what to do. Maybe Azula will make her choose between Zuko or the Fire Nation (if Zuko ever gets the gonads to go against his sister and father). Maybe Mai will show some hesitation, some uncertainty. Other than that, I don't see Mai as the uberly evil, manipulative b***h like Azula is.

I agree about her personality. Mai's not evil and heartless. She's just bored.
She goes along with Azula because it seems smart and logical, but doesn't automatically do everything Azula says. She is capable of independent thought and could chose to aid the protagonists, if the time came.

Well, but you have to remember that her concept of fun is throwing sharp objects at people. I won't say she's completely evil, but she does have a twisted sense of things. She has tried to kill people, and she did put her brother in danger. As for independant thought, it's not that she isn't capable of it, but I only have one instance in which she disobbeyed Azula, and until shown otherwise, I don't have that much hope for her.

I mean, Ozai tried to backstab Iroh when Iroh lost his son, so Sozin said that Zuko had to be killed. What kind of grandfather would kill his grandson to make a point? Sure, it was to teach a lesson, but going on with that, we also are shown how heartless Ozai was when he banished his only son after the Agni Kai. We don't really know what was going through Mai's head when Azula suggested not trading Bumi for Tom-Tom. And are YOU going to defy a Fire Nation princess with a pissy attitude when she's on your side of the field? Probably not. We haven't really seen Mai be able to make a decision without Azula around, save for The Drill incident. What with her personality overhaul in the new episode, she might become more rebellious against Azula. Or...maybe just stay on Azula's side, since Zuko seems determined to stay Fire Nation this time around. It's up in the air.

Or...maybe just stay on Azula's side, since Zuko seems determined to stay Fire Nation this time around. It's up in the air. Quite true, but only because she's high up the ranks of society (as in pretty ******** close to royalty)We've already seen how ruthless the royal family can be, but I don't believe a whole nation is like that. For the sake of staying on the original topic, my point with that observation is that killing and putting in danger aren't things Zuko is very fond of (or at least wasn't) it was, after all, part of what got him that scar. That seems like a big personality clash for me. And Ozai's father's Azulon, not Sozin domokun And in 'return to Omashu', I don't think Mai would have deffied Azula for anything; she was pretty bored, and they are friends. Mai was very happy to see Azula. It is up in the air, but the idea of having Mai as some kind of plot point isn't very exciting for me God, I love italics.
