I am going to make a steampunk prop in the near future, and I am debating with myself what should I addon to it to give it a more unique look, then I found this but I am not sure if it would classify for looking good on it.
This is basically what I am going to be making
This is the part of what I want to add onto it
But, the little symbol circle is slightly more gold than in the picture.

All else fails go with a trial and error approach. No one can really tell you whether something will look good or not as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As I have undertaken this same project I can offer some construction tips though.

First of all: Do not paint anything that is inside the gun, moves, or could disrupt the firing mechanism. You could end up with a gun that cannot fire. This goes for ammunition too, try not to paint the actual foam of the bullets as it may mess up their flight pattern. I would suggest using a sharpie or dye to color the foam on the bullets.

I would highly discourage using spray paint unless you plan on taping off every movable part. Spray paint can gunk up the mechanics and cause misfire or malfunctions.

Acrylic paint is what I used and was quite affective.

Before painting: wash the gun with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils that could have built up, as the gun in question probably was made using a mold, and use a fine grit to lightly sand the plastic. This will help your paint to stick.

As for aesthetics: If you're going to use it as a steam punk prop, you should try to give it a very old style look. For example, anything painted metallic (gold, silver, brass, copper) can be lightly dry brushed with black paint to give it a weathered look.

I made mine for a zombie vs. Humans survival urban game and was done quickly in a few hours. I may improve on it later.

I also did this. Here are some tips...

You can make a decent wood like appearance by taking a nice shade of brown paint and applying one coat, make sure all strokes are in the same direction.

When dry brushing also make all strokes in same direction.

Get a clear acrylic spray paint (a matte finish is nice) and give it one or two light coats after your done painting it. It will help to protect it.

here's a question:

what're some books i could check out to learn more about steampunk? i hadn't even heard about it before this guild, but so far i've loved everything i've heard and i'd love to soak up as much of this as i can wink

The Golden Compass
, Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman.

read A Clockwork Orange. the only thing that has any thing to do with steampunk is that "Clockwork" is in the name, but it's badass. really hard to read though.

You'll wanna have an online Nasdaq dictionary open at all times while reading that one.

But seriously, if you wanna read a steampunk book: Pick up anything by Jules Verne and books on 19th Century Etiquette

If this makes any sense:
WoW is not steampunk.
However it does have steampunk elements in, specifically the Gnome's engineering prowess.

As a retired marine once said to me.."If you can't fix it, destroy it."

That'll teach those cogs a lesson.

I don't suppose anyone has come across Scarlet Traces in their travels have they?
The 'sequel' to War of the Worlds?

I do love it so, especially the second one even though that is rather Dieselpunk..

I was playing around on those steampunk quizzes, that tell you who/what you are. Just for a bit of fun. And one answer came up as an 'aether badgerer' or something along those lines. I googled Aether/ether, but it only confused me. D: So, in steampunk terms, what is aether/ether?

Who would I query for permission to start a thread? I'm interested in starting one on Steampunk-themed anime [being as this is a site predominantly for the anime fan] such as Full Metal Alchemist and various Hayao Miyazaki films [Steamboy duly noted]. I'm also wondering if anyone would approve of the idea of a Victorian afternoon tea RPG in the Recreation subforum? I just thought those were good ideas but I generally prefer to ask permission before starting "official" threads in someone else's guild. pirate

pardon miss but Steamboy was by Katsuhiro Ôtomo. I think you're thinking of Howels Movie castel. Thats Miyazaki's steampunk film.

Um, I think Kaiya just meant that Steamboy was one of the steampunk animes, not that it was made by Hayao Miyazaki, though I could be misunderstanding. Also, most people think Steamboy is a Ghibli film anyway. Heck, most people think Ghibli and Miyazaki are interchangeable. You know how many times I've corrected people who think My Neighbors The Yamadas and Grave of the Fireflies are "Miyazaki movies"? (They're Isao Takahata movies, by the way...)

NASDAQ dictionary? Oh my! rofl I know this is an honest mistake as most people don't know much about the stock exchange or conlangs, but the word is Nadsat. Most modern and recent printings of A Clockwork Orange include a comprehensive appendix/glossary of Nadsat words, but it's still a pain to have to flip back and forth all the time just so you can follow the story. And unfortunately, ACW is really more of a cyberpunk sort of thing, all dystopian and whatnot, with the brainwashing machine thing and all the drugs.

I am super new to Steam Punk so I could be wrong, in this context... but aether usually means like the heavens or sky, which given Steam Punk's love of airships, that would make sense... but I don't know why you would BADGER the sky? Perhaps, Badgering Heaven, literally? A professional God Botherer? (I am reading Subtle Knife so that is not completly impossible! mrgreen
