Bit of a late review for me due to having to flee the country and such like... anyway...
I'm not gonna say this episode was bad but my interest in it only really kicked in at the point where the Doctor was hanging out of the ship trying to reach the lever. I don't know why, it wasn't anything particularly special it was just interesting. After that I got much more into the story.
The reason I didn't like it before that was not for any of the (many) reasons the rest of you have put (and I'll skip on any science rants cos you've all done it much better - the ship flies off with no fuel??? etc) but I actually didn't get into it because I just didn't like the characters. They shouted too much and I had no sympathy with them until right near the end. And Martha was a bit bleh. I want a ban on any more companion mums.
I loved The Impossible Planet so I didn't mind this being a bit of a rehash. It was nothing special though. I look forward to the next one with lots of squeeing cos it has evil scarecrows AND Will Scarlet from Robin Hood so it's got to be entertaining! whee

Like most people have said, the episode was good but could of been much better, and to those who are complaining that Jack wasn't back should of watched the Trailer after The Lazarus Experiment as it showed abit of ALL the rest of the episodes.Jack returns in the 11th Episode Utopia where The Doctor and Martha take a pit-stop in modern day Cardiff to refuel off the Cardiff Rift which explains why the TARDIS appears in Torchwood Base and then i think they go flying off to the edge of the Universe to help a patient professor to save his extincting planet.

katybutterfly Three line Japanese poems, with lines of seven, five and seven syllables. This needs correcting You are wrong I do believe It's five seven five. (My terrible haiku might be wrong though...)Quote: 5. Maybe there was a delay cause.. Like.. WHAT IF AN ALIEN CAME ON BOARD AND TRIED TO JETTISON THE CREW TO ESCAPE PODSS?! I suppose the crew would be waiting around in escape pods, then? Besides, if the alien has the ability to hit random keys on a keypad to control the pods, then he could activate the ridiculous magnets, open the doors and kill anyone inside. It seems in the future you can do anything with 9-12 keys. You know what Doctor Who needs? More monsters that say the same thing over and over, walk slowly, have their face obscured(or have no face) and will almost certainly kill you if they grab/touch you. Yeah, we haven't seen that a million times before.

Crumpet Lord I just read the poll again... Why is the Abzorbaloff no. 2? Why? Just why? WHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHY? The abzorbaloff FAILED. There are no words to describe the rant i would use to vent how much i hated that episode. And i couldn't rant it in the first place, because there aren't the descriptive words i need to use. I put him as two because he was better than the planty thingy.

And so easily. If people just admitted when they were wrong (as I did there) the world would be a much better place. I have more respect for people who can admit their mistakes than those who can't.

Okay, first off. Sorry for the late review.
AND WHAT THE HECK IS WITH YOU GUYS??? We're all here because we're fans of the show. Stop being mean to each other! It's annoying and pointless. It's perfectly fine to disagree, but don't be a jerk about it. PLEASE. If I wanted to see Gaians cutting other Gaians down I'd go to the GD.
I liked the episode. It had its holes, and it had its faults (which have almost all been discussed already), but it was still fun to watch. I was afraid it was going to be just like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, and I was pleased to see that it didn't end up that way.
I hated Martha's kiss in the end with that guy... ARGH. That really bugged me. But I actually didn't mind the phone calls with her mom... The way they talked/argued was really realistic.
But what makes me like (and I guess, kind of, love) this episode is David Tennant. My Bob, he was AMAZING! His acting was awesome, and I'll probably rewatch this episode eventually just for that fact. And the Doctor was scared! Ho - ly - crap! THE FANFICTION OPPORTUNITIES~ Seriously, though. The Doctor... in this episode... is the coolest he's been since The Runaway Bride (I personally LOVED the scene where he was killing the spider and looking all scary).
So, even though there were crappy bad guys, annoying minor characters, plot-holes-from-hell, and science that made just about no sense whatsoever, it was fun.

Getting back to 42, I know people are going to disagree with me here, but I thought it was a smashing episode!
The fact that it was set in real time was interesting, the guest cast was superb, and the fact that the sun was actually a living organism was quite a surprising revelation (even though it's been used before).
"Burn with me" isn't as good a catchphrase as "He is awake...", but overall a supurb episode: well directed (Greame Harper is a genius, case closed) and with some great acting (it's nice to know David Tennant can actually do something other than just be Tom Baker on helium week in, week out.
There were a lot of positives (I was going to get into them in more detail, but right now, I really couldn't be bothered), so I'll let slide the fact that the plot is largely dirivative of Sunshine.

Quote: 7.It was alluded in the episode that someone had CHANGED the questions, as none of the avaliable crew at the time knew the answers to them. Presumably the sun alien could have done this but that begs the questions how does a parasitical ball of molten gas hundreds of years in the future know the first thing about Elvis Presley? At the begining didn't they say they had made the questions up when they were drunk? But later I kind of thought it was the ship's computer that randomly selected difficult questions from a database (which would contain "historical" info) as a security thing... Reminded me of weakest link. *Shrugs* I liked it, even if it didn't make sense because the conversation between Martha and her mum was funny. This episode did have it's flaws... cliche sun creatures. But I agree with what everyone has said before: the good acting made it exciting enough!
