Dee nodded as she popped open a bottle of tawny port. She poured two small glasses of the sweet-ish wine and handed one to her friend. "I just may do that, thanks. And don't call it 'silly'...you put alot of time into it."
She fingered the fleshy fringe of one arm, then sat down at the end of the bed. Though not suicidal, her mind was still wandering around in bad neighborhoods. Dee took a sip and savored the warm melange of flavors as she tried to change her train of thought.

Richard had been expecting something more along the lines of the water bottle Dee had just thrown away. She stared stupidly at the port for a moment before accepting the glass. "You do remember what happened last time don't you?"
She took a sip and made face, it wasn't as strong as the scotch but, it was certianly... "well thats something," As she blinked away tears.

"Oh yes, I remember," Dee smiled. "The bottle has been open for a while...I need to drink it. In case you don't like it..." She got up and fetched a bottle of water out from beneath the desk. "This isn't cold, but it should do."

Richard set the glass down and looked up at Dee. "Dee how long has it been since you went outside? You haven't stepped out of this duplex since the last time I was here have you?" Her tone was lightly accusatory.

Dee took another drink, eyeing Richard over the glass. "Not true. I got out most days... not for long, but at least I left the house."
She was telling the truth. Unfortunately, her forays has usually consisted of raids on the beach bar then a prompt return home. Dee was not enjoying that accusatory tone. Uncomfortable, she ran a hand through her mane, combing it with her blunt claws.

Richard stood and grinned like a chesire cat. She had an idea exactly where Dee went every day. "Perhaps a walk would do you good. Hrrrmm?" The sound trailed into a bit of a purr. "You can't just stay in your duplex and mope all the time, its a beautiful night out." Her tail lashed, she'd take Dee out to her tree. It would just be a nice walk, it wasn't that she was worried about her terriotory at all. This wasn't a convenient excuse at all.

Dee recognized that look...it was the look of someone who wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. She tossed back her drink and set the glass on the table. After a quick moment to turn the pigeon eggs, she let Richard escort her outside.
It was indeed a lovely night. The cool, fragrant air was a delightful change from her usual surroundings. She could hear the sound of the ocean, the hum of air conditioners and fans, and the chirping of nocturnal creatures. Dee heard a familiar call as a nightjar swooped overhead in pursuit of insects.
She smiled and relaxed. This felt...okay. She could do this.
The striped islander turned to her friend, inviting her to lead the way.

Purring the entire way, Richard led Dee down to the lake and followed its bank to the mouth of the river. There was a lightness to the feline's step, excited to show her friend her little hideout, excited to have a reason to return after her self imposed exile. As the pair followed the river Richard started to run her claws through the bark of trees the passed by. Dee might also notice that there were older claw marks in the trees they walked by. For her part it appeared that Richard knew this area by heart, knowing exactly which stone to step on.
Finally more than a mile up river Richard turned into the jungle. It was darker here, the moonlight did not filter well through the canopy but if Richard even noticed the decreased light level she gave no indication. Fortunately it wasn't far before they came upon the object Richard was seeking. A massive tree, hundreds of years older than its fellows dominated this patch. Its thick branches could support a creature of Richard's size with ease. Richard made a small mewling sound when she saw it, actually dropping to all fours to ran up to it. She had been so afraid something would have happened to it in her absence. She actually hugged it, although the trunk was too big for her to actually rap her arms around. She marked it with the side of her muzzle before digging her claws into the bark and scrambling up onto a low branch to watch Dee below.
"Isn't it nice?" She exclaimed with enthusiasm.

Dee was honestly impressed. "Wow..." the naturalist breathed, leaning back and craning her neck as she admired the majestic plant. "It's fantastic, Richard. Thank you for bringing me."
Her friend's feline attributes were stronger than she had first thought, but Dee couldn't deny that this tree was a great find. "When did you claim it?" she asked, running her fingertips over some deep claw marks on the trunk.

Richard lounged on the branch, it was good to be back. Why had she been so reluctant to return? She couldn't remember at the moment. She ran her claws across the branch she laid on, her smaller limbs gripping it for balance. "Well it not too far from my fishing spot which is just down river a bit. Well, after snaring Billy twice in my line," She shrugged, "The tree just became more important."
She made her way back to the base of the branch and offered Dee a handpaw to help her up.

Dee perked up and kicked off her shoes, then reached up and accepted the helping paw. As soon as she had seen the tree, she had a childlike urge to climb it...but that would have been tantamount to charging into someone's living room uninvited. She was well-versed in tree-climbing, having been the adventurous sort all her life.
Her face was split in a wide smile, lips writhing over sharp canines, as she scrambled up. As her blunt nails scraped against the bark, Dee tried to remember if her low-light vision had ever been this good...
Along with her 'cured' nearsightedness, the 'nightvision' was another interesting side-effect of the change. Despite herself, Dee felt a surge of primal excitement at the thought of overcoming a lifelong disability AND the addition of a new trick.

Richard muzzled Dee and then turned away, scrambling up the tree. Grinning and purring Richard climbed as fast as she could, occasionally glancing back to see if Dee was following. She breached the jungle's canopy and looked out onto the moonlite tops of the trees. This was much higher than she usually climbed and she had to be very careful where she place her weight, Several branches had snapped on the way up.
It was a beautiful night though. A cool sea breeze blew across the top of the jungle. And the tree tops glowed with the silver moonlight.

Dee's progress was much slower than Richard's ascent, but she managed. She paused as she past the canopy level, and had to stop and stare for a long while to let the sheer beauty of this place sink in. "Oh wow..."
She picked a perch nearby Richard and settled in on a strong, gnarled branch. Dee leaned her back against the trunk and sighed, letting the cool cleansing air flow past her.

Richard didn't say anything for a long time, settling into her branches and letting Dee take in the view. The Island was no happy place, but even here there could be moments.
"Sometimes... Out here it doesn't seem so bad. Better than the village any way." She glanced over a Dee, smiling that feline smile and then leaned back against her own perch.

Dee gave a quiet sigh and nodded. She couldn't agree more. Down there was a hive of abuse, illegal experiments, and tortured souls...but up here was only beauty. This was an escape, albeit temporary, that the labs would be hard-pressed to deny. As if on cue, the wind rushed past her, toying with her mane and bringing along a potpourri of scents and flavors that would put even the finest tawny port to shame.
The elevated perch reminded Dee of something else near and dear to her heart; something that she may never enjoy again.
It reminded her of flying.
She would stay there until her welcome wore out, but she sincerely hoped that Richard would let her visit again.
