Hermione, after the initial greeting, was a bit lost for words by the emotions running through her mind at the sight of her friends. As a result, she allowed Harry to get on two or three trains of thought before answering them.

"Why did I not answer your owls? Well, long story short, I went traveling again, and our family ended up getting a bit lost, and since I don't have an owl of my own... Well, you know. Anyway, I'll tell you about it later..."

As Hermione looked about the lavishly decorated Great Hall, she too noticed the lack of new students.

"I think it has a mix of people scared of You-Kno- V-V-Voldemort, (oh stop cringing, Ron) and that people don't trust Dumbledore anymore, which is stupid, because Dumbledore's the best protection that anyone can get... just look at yourself, Harry. In fact, all of Hogwarts is probably the most protected place ever, if I may quote Hogwarts, A History, and which you would know, if you would take the time to read it."

"In fact, all of Hogwarts is probably the most protected place ever, if I may quote Hogwarts, A History, and which you would know, if you would take the time to read it." Harry grinned. So much seemed to be changing around them, at least Hermione was still the same. Harry glanced over to the Head Table, and wondered who would be filling the post of DADA teacher this year. At least that'll be the same... a new DADA teacher. He saw Dumbledore's wizened face, a head and shoulders above the rest, and he thought he heard Hagrid's voice outside. These familiar feelings gave him a warmth in his stomach that he tried to contribute to hunger, but he knew he was finally back were he belonged.

He had had a long summer. He looked forward to crawling up in his four-poster bed right after dinner and finally being home.

(OOC: I'm sorry it's so sappy! I figure this is always a somewhat emotional time for Harry, to return to Hogwarts.)

Tal grinned at Harry, eyes back to a shining relief. "Yes, Hermione, we know that we should read the book, but we count on you to tell us the facts." She nudged Harry, pointing at the Slytherin table. "It seems the Malfoy isn't here." It was a comfort, but her escapade this summer would soon leak out. It was blatantly obvious that Dumbledore would know about it. Maybe she should tell Harry... no, it was troublesome enough without telling him. But she had been having quite a few nightmares about it. First mom, then Nina. I couldn't protect my own little sister. She didn't even get a chance to come to Hogwarts.

She snapped out of it, trying not to worry anyone. Her pendant began to glow again, and she snuffed it out. She sat down next to Hermione, trying to avoid Harry at all costs. "But, Griffindor seems as large as ever. It's the other Houses that have shrunk." She might have been imagining, but it seemed very true. And Tal wasn't known for an imagination. But nonetheless, she was pretty calm.

Ron glanced at Tal again, ears turning a brighter shade of red. He was even more confused that this was happening. Did he have feelings for the young fifth year? No, he already knew she liked Harry, he couldn't. Great, now what was going to happen? Suddenly he turned to Harry, back to normal. "Oh, did you hear, Fudge was sacked. He was... ehm... incompetent." Ron knew Harry knew the truth, but didn't want to say it out loud. He glanced at Slytherin, and compared to Griffindor, and noted that Tal was right, Griffindor was as large as ever. It would probably grow larger as well, with the sorting.

Something's wrong with Tal. She seems so... down. Did something happen to her? He remembered his dad saying that a little girl was killed by Death Eaters, but he didn't think Tal had a sister. No, he was sure of it. Tal never mentioned a sister. Then again, she never mentioned anything about her private life. How had she even joined the group? Oh yeah, she had given them valuable clues a few years back.

((Another made-up. Here's a picture.))

A sixth year female sat down in an empty seat; not at all bothered by the drastic drop in the student population (not including Gryffindors.) She had long, wavy, chestnut hair and greyish blue eyes. The young Slytherin was fairly pretty though she didn't seem shallow or flirty like most girls. In fact, she looked pretty down. She had on the traditional Slytherin robes with a grey pleated skirt, grey socks, black mary-janes, and a black short-sleeved button down with a grey and silver house tie. She sighed, toying with a butterknife by holding it point down on the table; spinning it absently as the first years were sorted into their houses. She pulled some of her silky hair behind an ear, a rebellious piece avoiding her finger as it fell down into her face.

She crossed her ankles under the table, glancing around to see if there was anyone interesting to talk to. The sixth year raised an eyebrow curiously as she saw that a new student was a couple feet from her. Since there was no one between them, and she had nothing better to do, she got up and sat down to his left. She lightly tapped him on the arm, waiting for him to turn and look at her before she spoke.

"Hey. You're a transfer, aren't you?" she asked, already knowing the answer. Since so many had stopped comming to Hogwarts and the Slytherins size had diminished dramatically, it was a fair bit easier to keep track of her housemates.

Severus scowled as he engaged in an arguement with Professor Wolff, their conversation inaudible to the rest of the hall due to the loud chatter of students.

"No you daft cow! I'm telling you, Ericus Connoly is the greatest spellmaker of our time! How can anyone even compare!?"

"All I'm saying is it's a matter of perspective. If you're talking most creativity and fine art; Connoly is great. But when going on a basis of sheer force, Ariella Sheergoat knocks away all competition! I mean, honestly, that floating charm of his was fantastic...if you're fighting with a pin. That spell took him months to create and the most anyone's lifted with it is a forty gram paperweight! Now, Sheergoat's exaust hex was absolute brilliance. One hit and you can blow a hole in your opponent the size of a soccerball! Is there anything greater than that?"

"Bloody Americans! You're all the same. Blow this up, drop a bomb there...does your government have any other solutions to problems that don't include taking a large chunk out of the earth!? And what about Connoly's Ripple Jinx? That was pure genious!"

"What, are you talking about that silly little charm that ripped off the 'Butterfly Effect'? That was totally lame. You sneeze with that charm and suddenly there are earthquakes in China. What's useful about that?"

"First of all, there were a great deal of natural disasters undone through that charm! Secondly...what's the 'Butterfly Effect'?"

"Oh you know, that movie with Ashton Kutcher?"

Severus stared at her, blinkingly. She rolled her eyes before explaining said movie; making him look more and more confused as she talked about the crappy, and yet inexplicably high-grossing, film.

( x3 Trust me, they're just getting started. Don't worry, it'll get funnier as I get more creative.)

So deep was he in his readings and musings about particular ingredient combinations, Orion didn't register someone touching his arm until the third tap. Mentally sighing, he placed his cauldron book mark on his page and turned to the female that had stuck up on him (not that it took that much to begin with, he was practically dead to the world when involved in Potions), and offered a quiet, "Apparently." It lacked malice, or any kind of emotion at all, as did Orion's face, carefully molded into a neutral expression. Orion was no fool (regardless of what Professor Snape thought), and could see that he needed some interaction with the members of his own house.

As he surveyed the girl with a soul-searching look (one that made him and their Head of House look like practically twins), he continued on smoothly in that honey tone of his, "And obviously, I take it this house is smaller than usual, with the way those lions are carrying on about it." It wasn't a question, and Orion inclined his head towards Potter and friends, who were pointing at their table and gabbing loudly.

They are fools; the walls have ears... and eyes as well. Does it not occur to them to guard their conversation? Is this boy really supposed to be our savior? Is this boy really what our hopes dwindle down to? I've seen cattle more fit to lead then him. We're all doomed if we rely on that Potter boy.

Orion's azure eyes darkened to the point where they were almost black, and they fixated themselves on sky-blue ones, and there was a hard look on his face of a man who had gone through hell and lived, "And you are?"

And with that ,the look vanished and black eyes melted back into blue; the boys' voice light and calming as a river.

She momentarily turned her attentions to the thriving Gryffindor table. "Yes, numbers in all the houses, save for the ever-faithful lions, have suffered. As far as Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff go; they most likely fear Voldemort and hold little stock in the safety of this castle. The missing Slytherins, I presume, stayed away because many of their parents are deatheaters."

She stretched languidly before averting her pale blue eyes back to the young man before her; noticing the resemblance to her head of house but thinking nothing of it. Oceanesque pools seemed somewhat more attentive towards him as he asked a question of her. She paused a moment, catching the intense look on his face as it drifted away and was replaced with a far more pleasent one.

"Eve. Eve Beaumont. And your dubbing?" she inquired courteously, seemingly interested in this particular bit of information.

((Bah! Short post. Sorries!))
PostPosted: Mon Feb 26, 2007 9:41 pm

"I have many names, Ms. Beaumont... But you may call me Orion. Orion Lawrence."

It was a name that carried household fear for the beings of the Light, a name oozing and radiating darkness. The age old Lawrence clan was the oldest, darkest clan gone down in history. They were the first to support Tom Riddle, and they wouldn't be the last either. The Lawrence name, throughout the Wizarding World, was a name synonmous with wealth, prestige, and death. Everyone knew of the clan's secret ritual to conduct powerful, dark heirs... But no one knew what it consisted of. Children were not children in the house of Lawrence; they were tools and weapons used to apprehend the Light at all costs. They were less than human... The only use they were good for was the war... The training started at birth; the basic needs of the baby were ignored, and only when absolutely necessary did they give in to parental instincts. Each child was subjected to daily tutorings when old enough (four was the age he had learned) of the Crucio curse, and even muggle beatings. Weapons were to know obedience...

At all costs.

When an heir was ready to claim the role of Family Head, a blood ritual was undergone, and an irrevocable vow was placed to continue the deadly cycle.

What was Orion's deadly secret?

He was already Family Head; the cycle would continue.

Forever.

...

But was that what he wanted?

Orion cleared his throat softly, "So.. do you enjoy it here?" His tone was the same as before, betraying none of his thoughts.

Was it?

A small smile appeared on her lips; a rarity to say the least. These days few things amused her and still fewer made her cheerful. It seemed no one of substance attended Hogwarts any longer; however Mister Lawrence seemed to contain atleast some semblance of depth of character.

"Orion? Then I suppose it would be only polite to allow you the usage of my first name."

Something clicked in Miss Beaumont's mind. Lawrence...Lawrence...where have I heard that name?

Then she realized his lineage and the semi-present smile curled into a private grin. She recalled the knowledge she had of his family as though thumbing through an old novel of stored information. Her figurative book was promptly snapped shut as he grabbed her attention by clearing his throat. Her grin subsided to a barely-there smile as he spoke again; banishing her thoughts of his family history.

His friendly tone caught her offguard, totally contradicting the information she knew about the Lawrence clan. Hmm, perhaps he isn't related.

Oh, crap. Did he say something?

"So...do you enjoy it here?"

A real 'ice-breaker'.

"I suppose. It was pretty interesting the last five years, but it's really gone down hill since then. I'm afraid you've missed most of the excitement," she said rather gloomily. Eve sighed as she mentally kicked herself, reminding herself not to be rude.

"But, I'm sure it'll look up," she opted, rather unconvincingly.

She chuckled at her minimal efforts to make him feel more welcome.

Hermione, ignoring the conversation going on about her, was more content looking around the fabulous decor of the Great Hall. Like always, the ceiling was enchanted to reflect the actual surroundings of the outside atmospheres. Tonight was a clear night, with a few wispy strands of clouds. Looking closer, she began to see Orion's belt fly-

"It seems that Malfoy isn't here..."

Hermione turned a watchful eye to Tal, wondering why on earth she would mention Malfoy, of all people, but then realised that she was probably being over-analytical. Of course she would mention Malfoy, their nemesis of five years, whom they've spent most of their school careers thwarting.

As the conversation turned to more mundane things, her eyes wandered over to the front of the great hall, to where the teachers were seated. There, she saw Professor Dumbledore, eyes twinkling as usual. Seated next to him was Professor McGonnagal ((sp?)). Next to her was Professor Wolff, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, involved in what looked like a lengthy (and heated) debate with Professor Snape, who seemed to be losing.

Good for him. I hope he enjoys losing, after teaching us Occlumency under the guise of Remedial Potions. Remedial Potions! Whatever will Professor McGonnagal ((sp again... sorry)) think?

"Hey, take a look at Professor Snape. Look at how confused he looks! Oh, that look is priceless... I wish I had a camera, but of course those don't work around Hogwarts..."

((muh, it's a bit rough... I had a bit of inspiration, but then forgot most of it... *shrug* story of my life.))

(OOC: Is Dumbledore a NPC? If so, can I post parts of his welcoming speech/the sorting to speed things up a bit? Or did someone already have this planned? And ooh, I don't want to take all the main characters for myself, but can I play Draco since no one else is right now? I promise to post more Edit: I don't necessarily have to play him, but I would really like if someone would if you all don't want me playing both Harry and Draco 'rambles on' uh, yeah. Whatever you all think..)

Harry felt almost delighted to see Snape looking at the other teacher with confusion. Looking into the professor's sallow face, Harry felt a tingle of dread concerning his 'remedial potions' lessons. At least Ron and Hermione would be there, too, he consoled himself. Snape couldn't hurt them all too badly, or it would look suspicious, right?

His rumbling stomach had him staring at the empty Gryffindor tabletop more than the teacher's table, though, and he quickly forced himself to quit thinking about his impending doom. He had about a dozen thoughts running through his head as he idly rubbed his stomach- I can't wait to say hi to Hagrid. I wonder if this DADA teacher is as incompetent as most of them have been... Is Snape making friendly with her to try to take her job?... He looked up only when he thought he heard a familiar voice calling his name.

Harry looked around wildly, but his friends looked back at him as if he were hearing things. He ruffled his long hair and sat back, trying to cover it up. All right. That's the second time I thought I heard my name since I got off the train.

"So how about that sorting, hm? Should be soon?" he rubbed his stomach again.

(( Yeah, you can do parts of Dumbledore's speech and play Draco until someone else plays him. Also guys, Serpentinea's computer crashed so I'm not sure how long it will be until she posts. Just go ahead and she can pick it back up when she gets a chance.

Also, after the feast I'm hoping to fast forward to a Slytherin/Gryffindor double potions class. That way everyone can participate. ;D

So, I'll let you know when that happens.))

Hermione, studying Harry, as he seemed to be a bit harried (no pun intended xD) couldn't help wondering what was on his mind. She hoped that the events of past years weren't catching up with him... Her confusion intensified when she saw him look around wildly, but before she could say anything, he recovered, and said something along the lines of having the sorting begin.

Before she could say something, The magnificent, heavy doors to the Great Hall opened with a bang, and in came a looming figure, perhaps 10 feet tall. The figure was soaking wet, and behind him stood a bunch of shivering, very small and huddled. One of them was soaked.

It seems that every year, one kid manages to fall into the lake... typical.

"Hagrid! Over here!"

((Is Hagrid going to be an NPC? Just wondering. And, as a note, in two weeks, I'm going to be gone on a trip, so my activities here will be very limited. I will be gone for over a week. Just giving everyone a head's up.))
PostPosted: Wed Mar 07, 2007 8:19 pm

((Alright, thanks for the heads-up. And yes all the other canons are NPCs until someone plays them. You can pass them all around as you need them to interact with your character. Like in this case where you've just called the half-giant over to your table.

It seems the roleplay is falling into a bit of a slump. Hopefully Serpinenea will be on again soon so that we can really get it up and going.))
