Walking back home
So me and Gwena walked back home.
It seemed to me that the return journey took just a few days, compared to the several weeks that took me the first time. Probably it was because Gwena has a natural instinct for directions, and as she pointed out, "I'm not as dumb as you, to get lost so easily!"
I didn't complain though, because it was nice having Gwena back.
We talked a lot during our journey. She told me how she'd made a living by selling her art, and had several funny stories to share. She didn't mention why she'd run away in the first place, though, and I didn't press her. I didn't want her to cry again.
Eventually we reached our town, one late afternoon.
It was spring now, I could see the cherry tree in front of our house blooming.
The front door was open, so we entered.
Aiko was dozing on the couch, sheets of paper were thrown all around the room.
She jumped up when she heard the door open, and when she saw Gwena behind me she smiled. "You're here," she said. "I got your message just a couple of days ago, you've been really quick..."
Gwena twirled a loose strand of hair nervously. "I'm sorry I ran away," she said in a whisper.
"Don't worry," replied Aiko. "You're here. That's all that matters."
I turned and saw that Gwena was smiling too.
