The gypsy pushed past Silver- and, in the back of her mind, an apology loomed for being so brusque- but truly, there wasn't room for polite tidies in this conversation. Valelldia stood in the center of the room, and took a deep breath before turning back on Silver.

"There is important business at hand." She shot a look at Aisrhan, and sighed once more. She knew the child would not soon forgive her- especially not with what she was intending to do.

"Do you have the bag? I've not seen it except in a vision- a dream that the meij provided. But do you have it? It's black... with a green symbol on its front."

Silver backed up, a little shocked, as Val shoved past her. She shut the door behind her and lit a lamp. "Importa - My couplet bag? What do you want with that?" Silver frowned, but retrieved the bag from its usual place in her trunk next to her bed. She dumped the couplets on the table and handed the bag to Val. "Is this it?" she asked, a bit nervously. She couldn't possibly fathom what the other gypsy would want with it.

It was the same bag she'd seen in the dream, dark and covered in illusive, almost nonexistant shadows.

"Yes, this is it." She took the bag from Silver, and held it in her hands- almost softly. "Do you know what this is?" She looked up. "This isn't a couplet bag. This is a Fortunette. ...And it's time for its destiny." These were not the joyous words spoken by Valelldia whenever a blessed growth came upon the caravan... but instead dark, almost droll words that rolled acidly out of the gypsy's tongue. Silver didn't understand, Valelldia knew she wouldn't. But she was... almost bitter over her own destiny, and how her interactions with this family.. had soured. WHy did the meij require this of her? She stared back down at the bag... shaking her head softly.

"A Fortunette?" Silver's eyes windened. "That's... that's wonderful!" Silver started to smile, but realized Val had not said those words with any happiness behind them. She then spied the dagger hanging on Val's hip. Suddenly very worried for no reason she knew of, Silver looked into the other woman's eyes. "Val... what's going on?"

The normally bright, happy eyes of the mysterious gypsy were clouded with something... unreadable, and dark. She dropped the Fortunette onto the table, not watching as the material gently sloughed its way into a flat position. She stared, instead, into Silver's eyes as she drew the dagger from her waist.

"This can only happen if you allow it to." She held the dagger aloft- it was old and dusty... but its edge had not dulled over time. "Do you trust me, Silver, that this has to be done?"

Silver saw Valelldia draw the dagger. She saw the look in her eyes. She heard the words and a cold hand gripped her heart. She thought for a long, silent moment. "Val, I have no idea what's going on... but you... you above all people, I trust."

"Thank you." The words were soft, dusty, almost, as they fell from her lips. She wasted no more time, but took a ragged breath- and brought the dagger down deep into the bag with a vicious thrust. It was irreperably torn, severed by the blade.

But more than that- it was pinned to the table- and not by any regular dagger, but by one that had long since been infused with a dark, ancient magic. This was the Dagger of Keeps- and for any creature that eclipses more than one world, dancing between illusion and reality- a blow from the Dagger of Keeps will pin it to one world. Valleldia's dream had pointed out the bag... as holding within it a Fortunette spirit of such illusion.

Black and green light spewed from the wounded bag- streaking up through the air in delicate swirls, like blood in water, seeking the surface. Valelldia pulled the dagger back from its target, sheathing it in her belt as the light ensconsed it.

"It is done." She said, "Vehsando deris Animo... What we cannot see.. is now exposed."

In the bag's place... stood a solitary bird, it eyes vicously wary at Valelldia.

Silver gasped as Val slammed the dagger into the bag, practically shredding it with a single motion. Suddenly, a wave of relief washed over her and she drew a deep, ragged breath, visibly relaxing. Phew... so it wasn't THAT serious after all. Silver almost let out a nervous laugh, but the realization of what had really just happened hit her hard. Val... had destroyed a Fortunette. Silver's jaw dropped in astonishment and she prepared to say something, but black and green light began to spew from the now destroyed bag. A moment later, with a few words from Val, a large, greenish-black crow stood on the table before her. Silver stood there, stunned. "I... I... oh wow." She stuttered. "Khevashi... his name is Khevashi."

Val nodded sagely, accepting the name as truth.

"His element is illusion. He wouldn't have come into the world any other way, but with such a violent demonstration... and a bit of magic." She touched the sheath at her waist, very quickly, as if it were hot to the touch and would burn her.

"And I didn't want it to have to be you. ...A son should never hate his mother. I'm sorry... that your children will hate me so," she said, her voice quiet, "...and that Khevashi will have such a difficult path ahead of him. But what's done... is done."

"Oh, Val..." Silver said quietly. She quickly reached over and hugged the other gypsy. "Thank you..." Silver paused for a moment, unsure of what to say next. When she did finally speak, however, her voice was calm, determined, and, she hoped, comforting. "I can't possibly begin to understand what kind of a person it takes to bear burdens such as yours, but I appreciate all that you will do and have done for me and my children. I do understand, as I have said before, that what happened to Aisrhan was not your fault. We are all haunted by our pasts to some extent and I am doing my best to help her understand that you would never intentionally harm her. Khevashi may be afraid of you, avoid you for a while yet, but I certainly hope he will not hate you, as you so fear." Here the bird turned his head and looked at his new mother curiously, recognizing his name. With a flap of his wings he was perched upon her shoulder. Silver stroked his beak lovingly.

"I sincerely hope that is the case, my sister." Her words did not seem hopeful, but the smile on her face and the twinkle in her eyes did. She relished the embrace, and took one last look at Silver and her family before moving to leave. Before she took the last step out of the wagon, she smiled faintly at the tableau within.

"...And congratulations. ...On your family. When we reach the mountains, I'm sure whatever friends and family you have there will be excited to see you so happy."

Silver smiled thoughtfully. Her mother and father would be there. "Indeed. I'm sure they will be. The caravan should be welcome there as well. My people do not fear magic. This should be a most... rewarding venture," Silver said, her mind dancing with thoughts of the home she had not seen in so many years. She showed the other gypsy out and went about making some space for Khevashi. Aisrhan was still fast asleep. She had slept through all of THAT. Through... Val being there. Silver wondered if a bit of gypsy magic were not the cause of it.

That night, when Silver finally drifted to sleep amidst all the excitement of going home... she would dream a dream... that was more fortuitous than even a normal gypsy dream...

She was sitting at a table with blurred faces- faces of love. ...There was one seat empty, and she knew that at that seat... was supposed to be one that she'd lost long ago, and who she missed dearly.

Someone raised a toast. She couldn't see who it was, through all the blurred faces, but everyone else was raising their glasses, so she reached for hers. But someone next to her put her hand down upon the table- no. This toast was for her.

Everyone drank. And then... the room was so filled with love, that Aisrhan- who Silver hadn't realized was sitting so close to her before, looked up, and in a clear, happy voice not fitting her toddler-like form, said,

"Everyone loves you, Mother. ...This world is so happy. I think I'm ready now."

And then... the dream faded into the darkness.
